- Today I am covering one of the most requested characters ever, king Sphinx. After only appearing in 1 episode of Power Rangers, King Sphinx left a lasting impression on fans. I really hope you enjoy this video dedicated to him.

He was so heavily marketed that I was utterly shocked to find out he only had one episode.
They definitely should've used King Sphinx a lot more.

Always thought, for some reasons, that he was the same kind as Goldar(even though he was created by Finster!)! They both look a lot similar. King Sphinx's face looks like a skull, so could be a dead & mummy version of Goldar.
They also got pretty much the same powers.
Goldar can teleport, and teleport others. He can shoot balls of light from his eyes(instead of head piece for King Sphinx...but unsure if he still got eyes...).
Strip Goldar from his armor, or dress King Sphinx in Goldar's armor, and tell me they're not the same!

Honestly I always thought Goldar was a loin monster.
I used to this that too I thought him & Goldar were brothers cause he's part of the extended villain family
Back when I was a kid, I honestly assumed this guy was just as high on the villain totem pole as Goldar because there was quite a lot of promotional material for the guy.
I'm 100% in the same boat.
For reals with a name like King Sphinx you’d think he would have the same position as one of Ritas Elites
I assumed the same thing when I first saw Power Rangers and I feel that he should've been as high on the villain totem pole as Goldar, as one of Rita's elites. He certainly qualified for that spot.
I've always wanted to have this weird merchandising obsession with King Sphinx to be explained. I had a colouring book, micro machines set and a puzzle that all featured him.

Maybe they thought that he was the same species as Goldar and would show up more?
I always saw his toy heavingly showcased. He was a formidable monster of the day.
I think what helps with his notoriety is the fact that he would come out in all the toy commercials alongside Goldar. I admit, I always thought they were like brothers because of the commercials (I was also only 5 at the time so good marketing).
In the original footage known as Zyurangers, King Sphinx was name Dora Sphinx. He’ll ask random riddles that if you guess incorrectly, he’ll blow you away with his wings that you’ll be trapped in a tree. That’s the reason why his staff shoots outs question mark fireballs.
Cool looking motw that is only exclusive to one episode. His close resemblance to Goldar gives the character a strong impression

King Spanx should have been Zeo head villain if you look at his details of his armor he is kind of looks like the Gold rangers back in the Egyptian times that's my topic on that

That’s a neat idea. But from what I’ve heard, the King Sphinx costume deteriorated by the time Zeo started. So maybe that’s why.

King Sphinx is popular because his appearance resembles a relationship with Goldar.
Interestingly, in the comics, Goldar's brother looks like King Sphinx.
In my opinion, Goldar and Sphinx were childhood friends and fought together a lot only for Sphinx to be destroyed in the final battle by Zordon where Rita and her crew got imprisoned in a space dumpster.

Definitely the best monster that Finster ever created He also appeared in a lot of promo posters toys and T-shirts and I believe he was also in the toy commercial he got a lot of publicity For only being in one episode And you can’t forget his appearance was the first appearance of the zrods So that’s definitely something memorable

King Sphinx always looked like a recurring villain or main villain. Too bad the Sentai producers didn't utilize him in more episodes.
In Zyuranger, he was in a 2-parter episode.

I thought so too. I'm assuming that the two of them were childhood friends and fought together in numerous battles.
Admittedly I also saw the King Sphinx head in the comic shop on an early episode of Beetleborgs.
I remember a few kids had his toy and he was in a lot of the MMPR colouring books I had. He was definitely always a popular monster. Love this vid.

King Sphinx is one of the those Iconic but Underused characters who would benefit the most from receiving an expanded role & story in the new Power Rangers comic books.
I'm waiting for the Jarrod(Dai Shi) video. I don't remember him very well, I just remember him being my favorite as a kid. I hope to see a video on his story sometime in the future.

I don't even remember seeing this episode as a kid but oh my did I have the large figure of King Sphinx as a kid
first time I really noticed him was the island of illussion, because fighting the spinx was jason's flashback story

This is the one enemy of the Power Rangers that had the power of merchandise in his hands.
I remember seeing the early Power Rangers T-Shirts of all 5 Zords were fighting against a massive Egyptian King Sphinx.
I never saw any Power Rangers merch that featured any other monster of the week characters.
The Zyuranger episode was a 2 part episode of the Japanese original footage.
King Sphinx had wings too much like Goldar later did when Lord Zedd restored his wings in the very first episode Lord Zedd makes his debut in. King Sphinx and Goldar were indeed much like brothers based on their apperance.
I know that they brought lord zedd back in the new ranger series on TV, and now I'm thinking how cool it would be if they were to bring king sphinx back as well 😎

Okay, that was rather cool, kind of wish King Sphinx had more time on the show, perhaps as a stand in for Scorpina or something, but alas......Either way, could you do a video on the White Terrorsaurus? It's my all time favorite Power Rangers monster, and I wish it had shown up in more then just 2 episodes, but given it featured in "Fighting Spirit," it just seems like a special monster with some legendary battle qualities about it.

King sphinx is kinda like the raditz of Power rangers. Despite only for the first episode, fans were intrested towards him like raditz despite appearing for the first 5
I'd like to point out something that I learned a couple years ago. Got curious about the hieroglyphs on King Sphinx's chest.
Turns out those are called cartouches and when looking at king Sphinx head on belong to King Ptolemy and Cleopatra, respectively. So I like to think that Finster got the sand from their burial sites and run wild with the rest
Very interesting. I have always been curious as to why this monster was in or on so much tie in merchandise, such as coloring books. He was almost everywhere, even though he only showed up once. For the record, you are mistaken about his weapon. His staff/scepter is based off the hook like scepter of the pharaohs, and he is shooting energy versions of them, not question marks, in his attack.
I think the question mark is intentional, as sphinxes are known for riddles.
I had a huge coloring book this dude was in all over the place. Led me to believe that he was on the Goldar level before years later I realized he was a blip on the radar
Gotta love those early monster designs in MMPR.
He, Pudgy Pig, Giant, and the Nasty Knight stand out to me as memorable.

"in the shape of question marks..." I wonder if that was part of his original design - riddler of the sphinx etc. The question mark shape of the staff is pretty on the nose.

Since we are talking about villains I would also like to see a video on Rita's brother and Lord Zedd's serpentera those were some of my favorites also.
This guy was one of my favorite early monsters, along with nasty knight, that stoplight turtle guy, and the rapping jack o lantern.
Yeah, his actual use of tactics and looking like a giant badass and his wonderful arrogance was fun.
My fav monster of MMPR! If I was rebooting the brand, the King would be a regular as a duo with Goldar. En epic battle would follow, with Jason & Tommy vs Goldar & Sphinx!
This guy had a lot of promo stuff, but I think they could have done something like in Zyuranger, given him a human form to give riddles to people, maybe kids to take them prisoner, and be freed after his destruction. I know this means filming new footage, but it could have worked.
King Sphinx is just chilling in Power Rangers Wasteland.

I always thought he was super important since his toys were literally everywhere board games and coloring books I even have his toy figure and I though i kept missing every episode he appeared in and eventually learned he was just a one off villain I thought he was like a second goldar or a stronger goldar.but that definitely wasn't the case, glad they didn't keep the name "Fly guy" though.
Did you see they are making a Lord Zedd helmet? I'd like to see a Zordon or Alpha Helmet.

I watched the Japanese show where he appeared. He asked riddles and when you could answer he blew you away. If was a little Gullible because he fell for the trick asking the riddle of What is my Weak point. When the rangers couldn't answer he told them it was the snake on his head.
And to teach Gecki a lesson in leadership as well the first Combined MegaZord Transformed state
Always loved King Sphinx, we had a King Sphinx and Megazord puzzle when I was a kid.

You forgot to mention a King Sphinx mask can be seen in an ep of Big Bad Beetleborgs and how he and Goldar look very similar.
Guys he was also seen fighting the megazord alongside goldar in the lost pilot episode

He was like one of the few monsters that had a figure even back in the day I think that's one reason why he's so popular today

Did you ever do one of the Frankenstein monster from the first Halloween episode? That dude was the only one i remember that truly gave the rangers them hands. They even got in the Megazord and not even in giant form still gave them the business lol

I searched but could not find this, so apologies if you've already done a video on this. I think it would be awesome if you could do a video on Cyclopsis, Goldar's Zord. It's been years since I've seen the episodes, but as a kid, I remember Cyclopsis being such a badass and totally owning Megazord and Dragon Zord. I'd love to see a video with any background on Cyclopsis.
Yes, he only appeared in one episode, but there were a lot of toys about him, from normal action figures, to even figures from the micro machines collection, even coloring books always had him. So he was either really popular, or they wanted him to be.
Really wish he could have gotten a Figuarts figure. The Hasbro figure is fine sculpt-wise, but the paint job is SEVERELY lacking, and its larger size makes it too out of scale with said Figuarts figures for me to consider getting one.

I used to a toy of King Sphinx when I was a kid
I missed the chapter where he appeared and due to the commercials I believed that he was going to be a major recurrent villain (like Goldark) who would be introduced later.
The Game Gear game allows the player to play as him.
Jason woulda won easy, but he was a lil sore from knocking out 2000+ reps on that bench.
The super Senti king spinx is interesting. He actuly tells riddles and has a human form. A lot of monsters in ss are better less censorship. One of the monsters loses and his skin melts he start fighting in muscle and bone
His head is in the comic book store in big bad beetle borgs
I would like to make the blue ranger a like former pharaoh kind of like yugioh was a pharaoh in the past and he has the blue helmet with the Egyptian cobra on it, the Uraeus or wadjet with the horns signifying deity, leading his troops into combat like a pharoah or Alexander the Great, or Achilles becoming the leader when they don’t have the white or red ranger

Outside of his cool design, I don’t see how King Sphinx was suppose to be iconic.

He was called a king but was defeated early on in the season. He needed to be brought back and combine with Goldar to give him some brains.
