Important: I shouldn’t have called the lubricant “oil”. It was actually ‘ProTek CLP’ (a special piano lubricant).
Don’t ever use regular oil (like WD-40) on a piano because it can ruin the wood.

Piano techs are amazing and exceedingly talented people. So many little bits to understand and know how to adjust properly and then every player has difference preferences in feel and sound = which can all be adjusted. Those with perfect pitch have both an advantage and disadvantage, as a piano uses a stretched tuning in order to ‘sound right’. They can hear the proper pitch, but then have to adjust the ‘perfect’ tuning on each note have to the desired pitch, which is not going to be ‘spot on’ when checked on an electronic tuner. It has to be a bit annoying to those with perfect pitch. Those tuning for use with a professional orchestra also have to deal with the stringed instrument players preference to play at A442-444 ... instead of the ‘perfect’ A440. After seeing and hearing it many times, mom may not have cherished the process, but she knew it was something very special.

My grandfather used to tune pianos in his old age, 80's&90's. He used to wonder who was going to take up tuning of pianos as no one seemed interested. It's nice to see that young people have taken up the slake..

    That is a _beautiful_ piano.
I want to see one now in a dark clovery green (for clearly no obvious reasons)

They can own a $30,000 piano but they can't afford $100 clean okay priorities I guess

They might not have paid anywhere near that much for it -- might have got it used at an auction or something.

I was gifted a very expensive and collectable piano that was probably worth 15k when I got it, I definitely couldn't afford the cleaning on it but again it was a gift

Second hand pianos often go for peanuts as they're unwieldy things. People often just want them out of the way and really don't care about the money they get for it. We had an untuned Steinway from somewhere around the early 20th century that we gave to a neighbour because it just wasn't worth the effort getting it fixed and finding a buyer with the money.

Using ProTek in this case is sort of like applying a Band Aid to a broken arm. As a technician, I've been here several times before, and noticed (and observed from other techs) that it tends to dry up in just a few days (or hours), whereas the center pin will still be too tight to move freely, and will need to be replaced eventually. Jack center pins that are too tight usually cause repetition springs in grand pianos to wear out, and should be repinned for the best results. Just a word to the wise.

That's OK, they'll call this same tech back to fix it. Bet the price will be $100 over the normal

I just saw a short of a guy repairing an Xbox and not being able to fix it or understand what's the problem. so it's really satisfying that you were able to repair the piano and have it nice and clean ty.
