    Sandbaggy has a great selection of longer, stronger staples. I got some 8 and 12 inch staples which worked really well.

    I also found from my winterization last year, that using burlap or black weed berrier fabric keeps the mold and rot back better. Where my burlap and fabric was missing or deteriorated. I had more damage. My trees are not straight like your though? I have monster crop style for some reason? Maybe due to taking clones? Im sor sure. But i have more like bushes shaped like a crown and so I was afraid to bend them like that. Im wishing I had though because many of my top buds are looking iffy? My trees are about 30 inches tall from last years growth. And everything above about 20" in inconsistent. And so I will definitely use wood chips next year! Thanks for your video. Hope we all can come up with the best methods to keep our trees healthy up here in the northeast!

    Those inground trees should be fine this year Ross. Mild winter. Really mild winter. Great job buddy.

    The Universities want us to remove the mulch in the Spring to dry-out & wake up the soil to then reapply the mulch for Summer.
    I kinda think the setup needs to be a 3ft deep wicking bed so that you can drain-it in the Spring to wake-up the bacteria to start warming up the soil.
    I had a huge dry-leaf pile this year that I spent days watering until it eventually hit 164f until it went anaerobic & the temperature dropped to 140f. If I was injecting air for additional oxygen every 20 minutes then I'd be really cooking. I've been wanting to incorporate compost-comprehension to soil-health but for some reason many gardeners think they are different things but it's the same bacteria warming things up.

    Great idea. I have like 30 trees in the ground this should help.

      Definitely one of the better methods for protecting many trees.

    I just put my figs in pots in the shed. II am hip that they are not dead. I am also hoping that I did not have to water them because they were dormant. My inground fig tree I put a pile of grass clippings over the base and then put a tarp over the top. Again I am nervous that it could be dead. Our December was brutal. Like as low as 4 degrees

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  ปีที่แล้ว

      The tarped tree is probably fine.
      The potted trees need to be above 15F all winter. You may get lucky.
      Less water during dormancy is better than too much.

    I planned to do this this winter. I was waiting on the trees to drop leaves and go dormant. We went from lows in the mid 40's to 22 before they were ready and it looks like all my 100 trees have already died back to the ground. 3rd year i have had complete die back. Sigh...

    Love your videos, very informative!! I as well am located in 7A zone. My plants that are in the ground are still covered. When should uncover them and when should I trim my branches? Thank you so much!!

      Im wondering the same, got my 4 fig trees still covered. Waiting patiently, I want to uncover them now but I think we have a good few weeks left. It most likely can still snow. Im on Long Island

      @@2269tah What if it happens to snow end of March or even early April? Would that ruin the trees?

    • @2269tah
      @2269tah ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frankiemarchese2978 Not sure, but I think it is all about the ground where the roots are staying in the above 0 degrees range. It may snow but the temps for us in the Delaware Valley Mid-Atlantic area is not going into any hard ground freezes. Besides, snow would act as an insulator too, to protect roots

    Thanks for your videos! when do you uncover your greenhouse and raise the heat for some of the late figs to start leafing out? can you do a video on that?
    Thanks!!

    Hey Ross I wrote you last year about 3 airlayers I made that I placed in 5 gal buckets. My plan was to give them away but I ended up keeping them in my unheated garage for the winter.
    They survived but are now budding and actively leafing out and one has baby fruits. Should I risk putting them outside or keep them inside with a grow light till at least April?
    I'm in 7a also. Thanks.

      Move them in the sun. Put them back inside when there's frost or temperatures below 32F.

    Hey Ross , great video , what do you do to protect your trees from voles… has 5 of my trees eaten up this past winter. We are !

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Every tree gets a tree tube. The figs don't because they have too many trunks.
      Get cats, don't cover too early in the fall and there are also vole products that you can buy to deter them. We are!
