I dry and crush my egg shells to help them incorporate easier. anything dry and hard crushed with a mallet or hammer to give more surface to interact with water, air and microbiomes.
You're right, the smaller, the better. I have friend who BBQ eggshells, soak them in vinegar, and grind them in a coffee grinder. I like your idea of an old fashioned hammer.
@@TiaSilvasy yes, vinegar helps the eggshells break down if you have alkaline soil. I tried a coffee grinder once then realized it's the equivalent of running sand through your grinder.
Yes not all "biodegradable" items actually break down in normal homeowner composting conditions but I like to throw things in there just to test it out.

That paper plate is probably coated with plastic. I'd just keep that out😅
