    *This makes my old motor look like a toy **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it's well built. I haven't had it on the water yet, but I'm very sure it will perform just fine.*

    I'm using the same exact motor on a Cape Dory Typhoon sailboat to get in and out of my marina. I have it connected to an 88 amp battery and get almost 2 hours of run time at full throttle. This a great motor for my needs - it actually replaced a 4 hp Yamaha outboard that was way too much engine for my needs. This 62lb thrust Newport vessels motor is working out great so far, although it does tend to struggle a bit against a heavy tide. However, the ease of use far outweighs its limitations.

    I just bought the 46Lb Newport trolling motor for my inflatable Excursion 5 and didn’t have enough power in saltwater so I will be returning that. just ordered the 62lb L series and I’m hoping that it will do the job.
    Thanks for a great review! 👌🏽

      Engineered Angler Hey man I’m looking into buying this trolling motor for my 14ft jon boat for some inshore saltwater fishing. Would you recommend this motor. It’s a lot cheaper than a minn Kota so I’m not sure whether I should get this or spend more for a minn Kota?

      I have a question Newport.
      I purchased this same 62lb thrust motor for my new Pelican Bass Raider 10E Pontoon boat, but, according to the thrust test done here, the best thrust achievable was 34 lbs for this 62 lb thrust motor. Please explain the reason for the difference Newport.

    I've done similar tests with a minn-kota 30, a minn-kota 40, and a motorguide 54. All of them pull a little over half of what they are rated for just as your test did. Trolling motor companies clearly lie with their thrust ratings knowing that few people would go through the trouble of verifying their ratings.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They probably have some fancy method of testing that maximizes the results...

      I have a theory. They don't measure the thrust in a dynamic state with flowing water through the prop. It may be some theoretical calculation treating water as a solid rather than a fluid. If they do measure actual force at all, it's only for the instant the motor is first turned on before water develops a flow through the prop. Of course if they do measure that way, it's not really thrust which is a dynamic measurement of flow induced force. They do use the term 'static thrust' which in an honest world should only signify that just the boat isn't moving relative to the BODY of water, but I wouldn't be surprised if the industry took the liberty of misinterpreting "static" as the boat not moving and the water not even moving through the prop.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree...I worked a bit doing dyno testing of outboards for horsepower and there are definitely some liberties taken with correction coefficients 😆

    • @EngineeredAngler

      I found the head unit to be as well sealed as any of the domestic brands. I left it out 24-7 and what failed was the motor controller in the lower unit.

    I just purchased the intex mariner 4 and am looking to get a trolling motor. I'm looking at the 55 or 62lb in either newport or minn. Do you think the 62lb would be good? Would it have a performance difference over the 55 speed wise. A lot of what I read says thrust power doesn't correlate to speed...but on almost every comparison video I watch it seems like it definitely does. Also, do you think the shaft would be too long on the 62 (36inch) Has me confused. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  ปีที่แล้ว

      top speed will change very little between 55 and 62lbs. The length of the shaft will be determined by freeboard of you boat and how comfortable it is to reach back to operate.

    Your boat was bow high and the thrust of the motor was pointing down into the water, not parallel to the line of the scale. So the vector of thrust was not putting direct pressure on the scale. Hence the low reading.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup..lots of flaws with my test...definitely not expecting to replicate the kind of thrust tests that can be done in a lab. Was a bit surprised I couldn't get repeatable numbers but, that was due to my set up too. Thanks for the input.
