    He's the first one to make me realize that he's not only upset that he's being killed by God, he's being killed by his father. This is the emotional depth every other performance I've seen has been lacking. He's not just angry-- he's hurt.

      This is not a biblical take though. God didn’t kill Christ, for Christ is God. The only way for salvation was for one of sinless nature to shed his blood, ie God in human flesh. God did not spare Christ is more accurate statement. Biblically speaking Christ wasn’t hurt by Gods decision, he was simply scared to be brutalized and killed when He knew He did not fit that punishment. Though frightened, he submitted tot he fathers will. Christs cry if “why have you forsaken me?” Was to fulfill the prophecy of Psalms. He is not saying why are you letting them kill me, but “why will you not take me now and end my suffering” or “groaning” as in psalms.

    Standing on the edge of a dangerous life decision, I kept hearing this song over and over again in my head. I no longer subscribe to religion, but I have always held onto the image of God as Christ, before everybody made him famous, and perfect, and distorted who he was for their own purposes. I searched everywhere for a rendition of this song that made sense to me, and that my soul could feel. This man’s was the only one.
    And it makes perfect sense to me that a black artist understood the song. Jesus was never white, anyway.
    I realize no one will see this comment, years later, but I am playing this video over and over again…and this man may have just saved my life.
    Thank you, Evan. I hope you are still out there, bearing your soul. I will do the same with my writing, if my health ever lets me get back to it. There’s a book in me that wants to come out. It’s halfway done. Because…the world simply does not understand suffering and oppression. And they wouldn’t recognize the Christ who walked the earth in dirty sandals in a million years.
    God lives among the broken and vulnerable.

    This. Was. Incredible. He didn’t try to do it like everyone else who have played this role. He did this HIS way, and still gave such a heart wrenching performance. Though the original is a rock show, that doesn’t mean that things can’t be revised for a change. Nothing is wrong with not being, or singing like the original. We as actors and performers must tell whatever story we are given in the way the playwright envisioned it, while also doing it in our own way, and through our interpretation. So good and gave me chills. I might have found another guy to listen to😂

    Considering how disappointed I was in the recent John Legend performance with a lot of great singing but zero emotion, this is a breath of fresh air. Emotion is what makes this song and Evan's got it. Jesus doesn't just need to sing the notes, he needs to be defiantly challenging God to prove his case. A great performance overall and I love the emotion.

      I first saw this song by John Legend, and it broke me. I thought his performance was great, though this one is also incredible!

    • @sabineb.5616
      @sabineb.5616 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Teige82, I agree! This song doesn't live or die solely by the high scream. That would limit any creative freedom. But John Legend's performance is simply terrible, because its's devoid of any appropriate emotion. I hear only the manirisms of a soul star. The slick instrumentation is terrible, too. Evan Tyrone Martin's interpretation however is very different - but great! I love the simplicity of the piano in the background, too.

      John was horrible. What a terrible miscast. He is not an actor, and his voice is only OK.

      The entire cast of the John Legend performance was lackluster. But they also had a shitty ass audience who wouldn't know theatre etiquette if it jumped up and bit them in the genitals. They scream practically the whole time, so hearing yourself is already an issue.

      @@Yossus First I'll give you the quintesential Jesus everyone knows. Because it was the first Jesus we were officially given. This son of a biscut is STILL doing the roll off and on 46 FRICKEN YEARS LATER and still pretty much rocking it. The second he was having voice issues, but he was also SIXTY THREE YEARS OLD AT THE TIME. That note.. that NOTE that makes most people think of this song.. it has so, so much punch even when he's 63. The third link of him is 10 years later and tbh, I think it outshines the second, but he was supposedly not well that night when he was 63, but powered through it. Him at 73 is a little lackluster, but he's been doing the roll for nearly 50 years and the dude is practically a mummy. It's spotty at best but you can tell it still DEEPLY means something to him as a role. I mean most people sound bored halfway through one season. FIFTY YEARS and he still has passion.

      Luke Kennedy, I don't like tenors, I never have. Something about this version guts me every time. Idk what it is and I wish I did. And it's not his looks because I'm not particularly attracted to him either. Even young with little training under his belt he did so much with it - th-cam.com/video/AUrExJYO8S8/w-d-xo.html
      Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, just a cover but also one of my favorite covers - th-cam.com/video/gOjyGy1NR4Y/w-d-xo.html
      Michael K. Lee, American-Korean dude. Yes, it's in Korean, but holy cripes, Also does a bit of english - th-cam.com/video/u4SobcNflRE/w-d-xo.html
      Steve Balsamo, not one of my faves but he's very good. I think his high note is one of the best sustained and purely hit, but he has weird ways he holds notes and uses them that i don't like - th-cam.com/video/CJ6WSjtmxNM/w-d-xo.html

    I’m just gonna say it - Actors should stop thinking the G5 is a necessary component of this song. Very few singers actually sound good doing it, and it just ends up being jarring instead of impactful. Just like a “look what I can do!” that breaks up the emotional moment. Plus there are tremendously better ways to convey those passages - as demonstrated here. Absolutely stellar.

    To expect every person who performs this song to give the “infamous” scream (which isn’t even written in the score) is confusing and limiting, as we’re all different and should be able to interpret this song in our own way. I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I personally think this was an amazing interpretation of this song in every aspect.🙌🏾🙌🏾

    • @milograamans2
      @milograamans2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's a passage that every performer does in their own way. Because it is so demanding, each performer has to make it work for them. I find it jarring to not get the first G5 -- the subsequent ones don't matter to me after I've heard the first one. I don't know why I'm so particular about this. I think this performance here is really powerful, and I recognize my bias about that one note is getting in my way of fully appreciating what he's doing here.

    Quite frankly, this is up there as being one of the best performances of Gethseme so far. What makes this outstanding is that Evan manages to convey the emotion of the song without overdoing it, nor singing the high notes that virtually everyone listens out for, all while still producing power, sensitivity and control throughout.

    I think he's doing an amazing job here and is taking a lot of great risks. I'll say one thing that maybe needs to be refined is the pacing. His face is so wonderfully expressive but he kind of gives it all to us right away rather than giving it room to grow. I think skipping the scream is a really strong choice but it seems like he didn't have anywhere to go because he was giving so much in the beginning. I would be looking more to the director here than the actor though. Definitely not a performance to be bashed.

    Second best performance I've seen. No one compares to Ted Neeley, though. ☺ Nonetheless, very nice performance. He has a beautiful voice. Gave me chills a little bit at times.

      I was looking forward to the high notes as well. Very disappointing. It sounded more like something from "Annie" than "Jesus Christ Superstar". Ted Neely is in his 60s and can still belt it out.

      I can tell he can hit it, maybe he had another performance and didn't want to strain his voice which is understandable
