Not a fan of Crown of Barbed Wire. Think that is the weakest song on the album. A bit too unstructured and too much stuff in there.

I'm actually very satisfied with the album! I thought it would have songs I would skip but i listened to each song fully. They sound solid! Kirk's solos are improvised half the time but he did have some great moments. 72 season is a great opener for sure and I must say this album is better than Hardwired. James vocals are really cool on this as well. Lars finally has a sick drum sound 🔥 Robs bass tone is heard loudly throughout the album and he deserves to be heard like that 😎

Imo this album is a fkng Masterpiece can't stop listening to it it's great from beginning to end also thers an interview with James he mentions all 4 members brought in material this time there were 4 chefs in the kitchen and he says we are so proud of the end result and they are looking forward to the future so definitely this is not their last album

I’ll be honest. I listened to the album first on itunes. And was slightly let down. It felt like an album full of b-side/filler songs. I listened to it the second time on vinyl. And it finally started clicking. This is definitely an album that grows on you the more you listen to it

I actually look forward to each song on this which is a first for me for a Metallica album. I'm actually going back to Load and Reload and appreciating most of the tracks I skipped over in the 90's and finding them good. Never thought I would have said that but here we are.

It was awesome to see your reactions again, 6+ years after Hardwired. This album is far from perfect, but I think the band played it safely and stuck to the formula showcased on the previous two records, but this time it's a bit more consistent in sound. This album is a chore to listen to, especially for how unnecessarily long most songs are, that's why it feels redundant and repetitive on the first few listens, but the more you listen to it, the better it gets. It just draws you in for how catchy and riffy it is.

  • @andyk2607
    @andyk2607 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey man, you’ve made some really good points and I’d like to just add some of my own coming from a musicians perspective. As far as Lars’ drumming it’s not that he can’t play certain things live as such but more so that he can be a little lazy and also wants to conserve energy when playing a two hour show. He has proven he can play double bass comfortably live considering he still does it in songs like battery, fight fire with fire, ride the lightning, trapped under ice etc. And being a drummer myself I would actually say that overall his drumming is more interesting than hardwired to self destruct.
As for this album, I do agree there could be some more moments of “light” to contrast the heavy, but I feel these songs just represent where James is at mentally following another stint in rehab and his divorce. The songs and lyrics really echo his recent struggles. And I’m really surprised you haven’t connected with room of mirrors. Definitely in my top two on the album. From the catchy and melodic vocals to the twin guitar harmonies and the double bass, it really feels like the second half of this song could slide onto ride the lightning or justice

The more time you spend listening to these songs, the more “Easter eggs” you hear in the form of nods or references to songs across their entire history. Could he guitar or drum riffs, solos or even lyrics.
This doesn’t always amount to a great song, but it’s still fun to recognize something new every time you listen.
I also love that the Inamorata verse riff is basically “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz.
I agree with what you’re saying about their song speed. I’d love a “Load 3” album, and there’s times when this album DEFINITELY captures some of that sound… but I’d be happier with something slowed down and groovy.
Oh and I also loved that chunky riff change in Too Far Gone, the one you mentioned you wanted more of. That was cool and far too short.

Love the whole album and it gets better with every listen. I will say that I can still listen to the whole thing without skipping a track and the last album I was able to do that with was the BLACK album. Load, ReLoad, St. ANGER, Death Magnetic, and Hardwired I can't do that with as there are songs I just don't like but so far, that is not the case with 72 Seasons.
Overall, ROOM OF MIRRORS is probably the best overall track without question!! Not just because of the music but the lyrical content. Being about opening up your true self to someone and worrying if they will accept you regardless or just BURY YOU is really strong stuff.
Can't go wrong with any song really and understand the fact that every song will have people that say it is their favorite and that is cool with me!!

Inemorata really does see and have them so relaxed and confident. doesnt it? The time and mood just flies as you listen on, with the song taking time to reel you in further at its colossal yet comfortable pace. When that woozy, and utterly welcome chilled stilled interlude is lulled in, Jesus, it really does hit you. It is so reflective, honest and deeeep. It also , like the harmonized racing guitars in Room of Mirrors, makes you wish that some of the songs overall had more of those fantastic features. You can only imagine how much exciting variance the album would have had, if some tracks had different things going on, tempo changes, clean guitars.

@@ChainsawReacts Thanks for the reply. 👍I wanted to ask you about Kirk's "Portals" EP. Did you like it? I loved it, it showcases a whole other Sound and Vision to his styles and writings that, I cant tell you how much I'd have loved him to have Fixxxed its way into this album! Taking cues from movie soundtracks and tipping his hat to his OG metors like Uli Jon Roth and Iommi, his compositions and soloing on Portals is brilliant. Storytelling, narration and atmosphere through a more exotic, inventive playing ...with less wah wah!!! One of the reasons Im dissapointed with his playing on the new album is that Portals really makes you hear what he can do outside the Metallica blues box hes stuck in. Hes got so much other creative playing that, I want to hear in Metallica's music.

This album would be a 10/10 if someone pushed Kirk a little bit more, like Bob Rock did back in the days of the Black Album. Black Album, Load and Reload have some memorable melodic solos, and I wish 72 seasons was like that too. Unfortunately Kirk just became lazy. As a musician I can tell James and Lars were not delivering their best, like, 15 years ago, but they are definetly taking music seriously, and both of them have improved significantly over the past decade. Rob has always been consistent. But Kirk.... oh man... it hurts me to say, because he was the guy who inspired me to play, but Kirk is a retired musician in activity. He dragged this album down.

The album has really great moments equal to meh moments, it has my 2 favorites Room of Mirrors and Inamorata being the highlight songs of the album (outside some singles) for me. While other songs such as the title track, Shadows and You Must Burn, and Crown and TFG? being a lotta fun to listen to. Then you got songs with some good and equal meh such as Sleepwalk and Chasing Light, like they aren’t bad at all, but they aren’t too interesting (especially Chasing personally w it’s main riff i just don’t like it too much). Now singles I enjoyed them all, but after a while Screaming Suicide i really don’t care for the intro but the rest of the song the production shines very well. Darkness and Lux i personally love, the choruses for both are one of my fav moments off the album. Lyric writing both lack a bit for a lot of the singles, but going into the rest they’re good, but James vocals kick so much i don’t mind it too much. However the best song I’d have to argue is the closer, it’s just amazing how 11 mins goes by so fast yet it’s such a trip of emotion and grooviness (w Room of Mirrors being a very close 2nd). Overall it’s an album that I enjoy a majority of, w a couple of dud moments, i thinks it the embodiment of a 7/10 album.

Its not at all about Kirk plying fast or slow. Its that he plays what is essentially the same solo every song. Double stop bends to kick it of, a repeating pentatonic lick. Then a repetitive modal lick. Then a descending type thing to get back down the neck to transition to the rythym. Every song.

The one thing that drives me crazy about almost every reaction I watch is this obsession with comparing each song to a song of the past. “Ooohhh…this one has a Fixxxer vibe” or “This one has a Battery feel to it”. Like what the fuck. THAT is the reason so many people hate this album…because it isn’t Master of Puppets 2. Why the constant comparisons to the past??? They aren’t 20 anymore!

For me personally.. i really like EVERY song on 72 Seasons. In example on Hardwired there was 2 songs i just didnt liked and i think since 2016 i maybe heard them not more than 5 times. (ManUNkind and Here comes revenge). Solos: yeah im completely with you. Kirk just didnt need to shred over every time. People complain that his solos have no structure or aren't well planned but i think he just let his emotions/feelings whatever flow and played what feels right. This Record is very attached to the feelings of every band member. Even Rob said that every bassline has a meaning and i think you can feel that.
Its rare that i like a whole record so for me its a 10/10 :)

For me, Shadows Follow, Lux Aeterna, and the last three were the ones I really liked. I didn't care much for Sleepwalk my Life Away, You must Burn!, and Crown of Barbed Wire. I have mixed feelings about Chasing Light which is mostly good, and the rest were good but not great. There's nothing that wasn't up to standards in terms of heaviness, or anything that was really bad in general. I didn't mind Kirk's Solos, he's playing the same type of wah-drenched, bluesy, pentatonic scale licks that he's been doing for the last 25 years or so. Loved the guitar harmonies on the last three songs, and that slower, melodic part of the title track's solo as well.

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, I agree with that. A couple of songs needed clean guitar verses to add dynamics, character and identity to the song itself. Make it different to the previous and nxt track, giving the album a better flow. One of the things I loved about Hartwired was the structure to the album's first half. The first 6 songs ebb and flow brilliantly after eachother because they all are unique from eachother. Moth into Flame's anthemic rush for instance, perfectly leads into Dream no More's colossal doom, which then perfectly leads into Halo on Fire. And Halo itself is a brilliant example on how to write a modern Metallica song thats long, giving it separate sections, leading different places, variety. I dont hear that dynamic, variation on the new album. Whilst the songs are good, its too samey, too many similar, simpler E chugging all the way.

My rating based on how good the songs are:
    72 Seasons (9/10)
    Shadows Follow (9/10)
    Screaming Suicide (9/10)
    Sleepwalk My Life Away (8/10)
    You Must Burn (7/10)

Besides Kill Em All, modt Metallica albums did not have fast stuff. RTL only has Fight fire, Trapped and Middle part of RTL, the rest is upbeat or slow. On MoP only Battery, Damage InC and Some parts of Disposable Heroes are fast, the rest is upbeat or slow. On AJFA only parts of Blackened, Shortest Straw, the end of One and Dyers Eve are fast, the rest is upbeat or slow. On DM, hardwired we get the same ampunt of fast songs that are one those ear albums. On 72 Seasons we do too, I guess. I believe that, besides production and all that which I still believe they did it best back in the day, the music is still the same quality. Play these last 3 albums with the old tones and it is on the same level. I love the latest metallica albums.

I think when it comes to Kirk's solos, they aren't that bad for the most part but I wished he did stuff similar to Inamorata. Where it feels like he really sat down to write that closing solo/lead part. I bet you the solos would be better appreciated by fans if he made more melodic solos for the songs that don't need a very fast tempo lead. It becomes almost to distracting and out of place. Plus the actually scales he uses gets monotonous at times because they do sort of start to sound the same ish for some of the songs. I honestly have no hate for Kirk and his overuse of the Wah, since it became his style around the black album onward. My only gripe is that his leads start to not fit what the song needs at some times. Overall though I do enjoy his playing and always will. This album will need to be heard multiple times before I am can really go in on these songs and criticize them for the good and the bad. I would rate this album right now at a 6.5 , I hope my rating goes up the longer I listen to the album.

I agree. If you hear his "Portals" EP from last year, its full of fantastic melodies , cool interesting compositions. All composed with exotic scales, tasty melodic soloing and storytelling passages of movie soundtrack influenced music. Listen to "The maiden and the Monster" Wow, its bloody brilliant. Cinematic, stirring and capturing you in a moment, scene from a movie. Building from atmospheric clean tone segments to a rock out finale , roared along by one of this best solos in years. I was so excited at the idea of more of that style, sound and technique fixxxing its way into the Metallica songs here, but I was disappointed that it was an instead referral back to WahWah land and Pentatonic plunderings. It overall enforces the "samey" feel to the album as a whole.

I think this album is totally fine. its not a genera defining, historical, album by any means but its totally fine. I would say 10 of the 12 songs are really good which is a change compared to Hardwired. I really disliked most of the second disc of Hardwired outside of Spit out the bone. It felt like the second disc was mostly filler. I dont feel like there is filler on this album at all. I personally dont much like the title track or Crown of Barbed Wire. I'm still 50/50 on Sleepwalk my life away. Outside that in my opinion its mostly good stuff. Not great, but good and that is totally fine. In my view You Must Burn, Too Far Gone, Room of Mirrors, and Inamorata are standouts for me. I think if you just allow yourself to enjoy the album its a great listen. Totally worth your time. Disagree about the solos, its not that they aren't fast, its that they are just...weebly wooobly googly random pentatonic notes, bends on the 12/15 fret on the high E and B strings, random runs down the neck, almost zero melodies, the phrasing is very predictable and he uses the same licks he used since Kill Em All.
I actually think he is a better guitarist when he does something slow, these thrashy solos just sound like a 14 year old jamming

I absolutely love Metallica and I love Kirk’s playing. He’s so expressive and I love all the wah…his playing has huge personality. His solos serve the song and are bigger than just technical flash. I know he talks about spontaneity and playing in the moment, but I do think some of his solos could benefit from a bit more composition before he records. He sounds like he’s improvising everything which kind of goes against what the rest of the songs sound like.

72 Seasons as an album is solid. Not great, but solid. I would say that as an album, it definitely has a consistent theme throughout. Inamorata though, is the shining star. James poured his soul into that song, lyrically, the harmonies, the last solo James does, it really has that dark authentic vibe to it like My Friend of Misery, Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, etc. But Inamorata felt MORE personal, like you could really feel some true pain through Hetfield's voice and his solo. That said, if that is the last song of the last album they ever make, they finished on a high note, and earned it.

Is it the best Album that Metallica has ever released? Probably not. Is it on par with some of their best albums? 100% For sure. I loved this album. Instant classics on this in my opinion. Highlights for me is Lux Æterna, Shadows Follow, Too Far Gone?, and Inamorata. The weakest song for me is 'If Darkness had a Son'. That song I just couldn't connect with. All of the rest of the songs are excellent but didn't make my top picks.
I just find that where Metallica is the biggest heavy metal band on earth, they are gonna be dissected bit by bit each time they release a new album and some of those people who negatively reviewed this album, their expectations of what this album was gonna be like is unrealistic. Like you've said in this video, they are getting up in age. They're in their 60's for God's sake. Every song isn't gonna be a crazy 6-7 minute non stop 100% original riffs from James with an 'Unforgiven'-like epic guitar solo from Kirk with the most technical, creative drum patterns from Lars along with Rob creating Orion-like epic bass writing. Those songs will never be written again. Also I find it funny that those 'fans', all they want is Metallica to write songs like they did before The Black Album and when you do hear something that is something similar to that, they instantly hate it and say its unoriginal. Can't make everyone happy I suppose...

The song I've listened to the least is Screaming Suicide. I heard it a couple times after its release and have not listened to it since. Just didnt resonate with me.
I said it elsewhere, the thing holding 72 Seasons back was Kirk. To make it clear: I'm not asking for a return of 80's shredder Kirk. TBA Kirk is just as fine. He composed excellent, memorable solos. For 72 Seasons the only solo i can remember off the top of my head is Lux Aeterna's, and not because it was great, it's because of its short, simple , repetitive nature. The songs needed better, composed solos. That's it. Kirk can say he improvised and just went off the cuff. Sorry, but the music deserved better. He always says the solos are about serving the song, so much so he made a point out of it when the "No solos" rule for St Anger pissed him off. We know he's passionate about music but here I dont think this particular approach was the best. The band may be more laid back and less confrontational than before (which is good) but letting things go to avoid confrontation is a detriment to the song. If James or Lars dont want to be the bad guys then Greg Fidelman should play the bad guy, just like Bob Rock did. Some of the songs could use some editing and dont really need to be that long. The guitar stutter in combo with the caveman drums are heard way too much in this album. Metallica had some amazing transitions from one part of the song to the next, here we lost that. A better direction or different perspective could have rectified this. Guess we'll have to wait for the "Making Of" to see how the songs came to be.
I score it a 7.5 out of 10. A notch below Hardwired which i thought was their best album since TBA.

Hardwired and 72 Seasons are pretty on par with each other, but I think Hardwired is only slightly better. It’s more consistently good, but 72 Seasons has better high points. Screaming Suicide and If Darkness Had a Son were the worst and least representative choices for singles, but they’re not that bad, and I have a better opinion of them than when they were released. The Screaming Suicide riff isn’t interesting enough to be so repetitive, and I really don’t like that talk-singing bridge. And If Darkness Had a Son is mostly good, but the verse is awful. My other complaint is there’s too much of the James tendency of writing lyrics where it sounds like he had a rhyming dictionary cracked open (see, for example, Shadows Follow). So, I like it a lot. Hardwired is really front-loaded, with the back half not hitting as well, and the weaker points of 72 Seasons are more spread out, which makes it a lot more enjoyable to listen all the way through, and, again, the high points are so much more prominent on this new album.
