I solved it today. My story: I decided to pick up my apple watch (series 1) from the drawer to sell it. It's been in the drawer for almost a year. When i put it on the charger it refused to charge. The apple logo kept appearing and disappering. sometimes for 1 second, sometime it lasted 5 seconds. Then sometimes i got the red exclamation mark when i pressed both buttons, but that too disappeared after a few seconds But I actually got it working again. I simply held in the 2 buttons for a very long time (exclamation mark appeared). After a while i could release the buttons and the exclamation mark stayed on. After 10 min of charging i pressed both buttons again to hard-reset it and all of a sudden it gave me the green charging road (green snake of death). I charged it for another 5 min, then removed it from the charger and drained the battery until it was completely dead again and then put it back on the charger for 1 hour. Now it works again!
Nop that is not broken. Just keep on doing it put on the magnetic charger. That happened with my apple watch twice. I just patiently did pressing the crown and home button many times. Then it came to life. My watch is functional and working well.
I had the same problem today, what I do is reset everything from our i phone, and start pairing back from the beginning. When starting to pair, try everything like the first time we installed our i watch, don't use the back up, so far the method I've used has worked. Good luck
I was able to get mine to reset. It took about 15 minutes to play with. Without being plugged in, I tried the hard reboot many times. Finally held both buttons for 45 seconds and let the logo cycle. I also did a reset on my phone to unpair the watch. It fixed it.
I have a first gen stainless steel black bought June 2015...got the red circle and exclamation on the screen while I was doing a software upgrade 15 days ago...did several hard resets, contacted apple... they offer to fix it for free. They found out that the pressure screen sensor was replaced by me and it did not matter that the watch was working before the upgrade now I have to pay $240 to have it fixed. I feel it is a mistake to buy the expensive edition of this watches. This watches seem to be disposable after 4 years. ( The watch began to fail 3 months ago; the battery got a bubble of air and pushed screen out of the frame case ...$ 190 to fix at apple store as recall grace period was expired.... I spent $19 dollars in parts to fix it my self.....for a $1200 watch less than 4 years old with a recall on that battery problem well known ??? ) ......Should have bought an Omega Sea Master and look like James Bond for that money .....;-(

Happened to me too while updating. I contacted apple support and they are sending me a box to send it to them for repair. Free. Simple. Warranty is expired also.
I had the same problem on my Series 1 last week. Went to Apple Store & they said they had to send it in to get repaired. Yesterday I got an email saying that it is a “Hardware Issue” and that I had to pay $199 for a replacement since my AppleCare+ warranty expired 7 months ago (which is bullsh!t because it happened after updating it, so it’s clearly a compatibility issue with their updates). I called them and after speaking with multiple techs for 40+ minutes they finally decided to “Make an Exception” and send me a free replacement. I guess i got lucky.

Spoke with a senior advisor and he said he would make an exception too and not charge a penny. He mailed me a box to send it back in. So far so good- can’t wait to get it back! People keep pushing through and ask to speak to someone higher up. Going to the store they will try and talk you into buying a new one. This is a software issue so we shouldn’t be paying to fix it or get a replacement.
At least you got one day use out of it. Mine arrived DOA, Dead on Arrival right out of the box. Waiting for a replacement. There are actually several others on TH-cam that have had the same problem. This is starting to sound like a common issue.
I just have the same problem with my new Apple I watch3 sport . I took it back to the store and they replace the watch and we attempted to set the new watch right there in the store. The new watchDid exactly the same thing got stuck in the loop with the Apple logo after a hard restart I got the red ring of death on the new sport watch so we tried again with a new phone my third new sport watch and exactly the same thing happened then I restored my iPhone X to a brand new phone and tried to repair The phone and watch one more time and it worked I will be speaking with AppleCare later today to go over what went wrong maybe this could be an easy fix for anyone who’s having this problem erase all information and start your phone as a new phone and then begin the pairing process with your watch hopefully this helps
AW S2. After OS update, Red exclamation mark appeared on the screen. Reset and other doesn't help. Apple service reinstalled SW. Red ! disappeared. But watches show just Apple logo. Apple offered me refurbish AW S2 and charge me to 300$ !!!, which I didn't accept. I was Apple fan. Not now.
Yesterday my watch froze during a software update and now it's bricked! Worst part is my one year warranty expired two weeks ago! Do you know if apple will replace it?
Apple watch is one of the apple useless product faced this problem and then apple support said now watch is of now use. Looks like apple is trying to promote new watch sell by introducing such software bugs. upsell strategy.

same problem yesterday ! first time ever I'm stuck on an apple product juste because they can't provide a simple hard wire connection to the watch. I guess it's just software related but I'm stuck now...will have to wait for a replacement !
I got this problem also. I have tried some solution offered on several websites or youtube channels, but as usual, none have the same result but luck. Compared to the price, it not worth at all. The only solution they may offer is checking you bank account.

I ask what was the hardware problem they said the technician at apple wold not say. I told them since my watch was working perfect and only after a software update became broken I don't believe them . I ask, whats broken? they responded, we don't know they said but if the software did not do what it was suppose to is a hardware. you should pay $199.00 to fix it or buy a new one. I responded is known you are slowing down apple phones that the warranty has expired or don't have apple care extended warranty. Apple update broke my expensive watch . If you have apple care you have two year warranty and your watch would still be under warranty. This issue only affected Apple Watch that had first software release. It was fixed with software updates. Try pushing the in Digital Crown button and the side button and hold till the watch reboots and you see the apple logo. After this the watch should reboot up. If the watch is not charged charge it up and then try this.
I got the Red "!" of Death and I fixed it. Here's what I did: First of all, i'm sure i didn't personally fix it, but rather the device booted up. Every single forum and video says to boot it up by pressing both buttons, which i repeatedly did without any success. The watch was stuck in the apple logo. I tried doing the booting with the watch charging and with it not charging. Eventually, I did the boot while charging, then took it off the charger and 1 minute or so later, my passcode screen popped up on the watch. After unlocking it, the watch took a while to go back to normal, and then it worked without any issues.
Laxman barailee Tbh I’m not exactly sure what you mean, but I’d just recommend resetting it and trying to boot it a couple of times off the charger, if not, try charging it for like 10 mins then try again. If that doesn’t work, then I’m not sure about what else could be done

I had the same problem. Ended up going to an Authorised Service Provider and they replaced my watch for free since they can’t fix the problem. This is in SG and my watch is still under warranty.

Justin Carrazco The only solution I know of is to press the crown and side button and the watch will reboot. This solution did not work for me as I had older software installed. I had to go to the Apple store and they reset it for me but I asked for a replacement.

Oh nooooooo! I just have this problem today!!!! So upset cause i rely on my watch all day. Never have this problem before, good thing I'm still under the one year warranty cause I don't have the Apple care. Do they fix it or they replace it???
I think they will fix it. They have the ability to do a hard reset or reload the the software to fix it.

I had the same problem. Ended up going to an Authorised Service Provider and they replaced my watch for free since they can’t fix the problem.
This is in SG and my watch is still under warranty.

I did not have apple care. I think they will take care of you no problem.
So this is like completely unfixable.
Logan Brocksh Watch needed to be sent in for repair. They reset it and it's all fixed...
Just keep holding and pressing the two buttons for a couple minutes and it will work just has the same problem with mine.

Justin Carrazco The only solution I know of is to press the crown and side button and the watch will reboot. This solution did not work for me as I had older software installed. I had to go to the Apple store and they reset it for me but I asked for a replacement.
