She’s 100% right; our churches used to be a refugee for the poor, for the weak and the troubled. They played a major role in the communities, protecting our moral values and rights. However, money is the order of the day, morality has eloped our societal norms. They used to do this effortlessly with several styles of penalties; the consequences became a deterrent for the masses. Nowadays, there are little or no cultural or religious consequences; everyone in the society is running amok like a headless chicken. No true leadership with sense of true responsibility to drive the society to greater moral standards

By acknowledging the truth in your post I am shamefully admitting to being guilty. As a member of the Christian community, the words in your post hit hard. The church is made up of people and it seems we have lost our way. Help us Lord to remember your commission, to love one another and go ye therefore and preach to all nations the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

yes we all must constantly return to the root virtues of our faith that is true. a world without religio and a collective connection to God is not an option for African people. we are chiefly a people of faith and no bad leader will change that. Africa is currently the most powerful part of the Catholic church as it has always been since the founding of Christianity. We Catholics must hold our leaders accountable by using our faith not by losing it. I hope Ms. Chimamanda hasn't completely lost her faith from the bad actions of a few when so many more are doing good in the African church.

After years of giving it all to the church. The only message they got from the church was a letter thanking them for choosing a Catholic cemetery and what the fees they had to pay. These were people who did alter work .

@@apachekafka773 now you are trying to deflect. So the church has no responsibilities to those who dedicated their lives to ensuring the good news keeps spreading. The church organization should have cared for the deceased that was the point. They should done a good will gesture to the family like waving the fees, maybe donating money or resources to the family in a time where they are grieving. There several communities here that pay the deceased a certain amount for burial expenses but All the cared about was the patronage.

A pastor would tell you to pay deliverance tithe, blessing tithe etc.
Does that mean if you don’t pay the pastor, you won’t get delivered or get blessed by God?
Are we paying God now for blessings?
And we laugh at people that pay sango?
Make we dey get sense o

Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. Chimamanda and her family needed comfort in their time of grief, not judgment. She has every right to be upset at this priest’s uncharitable behavior.

Thanks, Ngozi Chimamanda, for raising this issue about the way and manner Catholic church conduct service and themselves in Nigeria. When l visit Nigeria and attend Mass, l cringe.
It makes me feel sad because it is not the way l was raised and thought in a Catholic church l grew up and cherished.
It is high time they return to the authentic way of Catholicism. ❤❤❤

I agree 💯 except the catholic church part, it's not Catholic church but churches around the world. The heartbreaking part is the priests /religious leaders are so self discriminating, critizing and inhumane.
At what point do they ever give GOD all these money. Its certainity that the church of God will be built, services will be comsumented with offering, tights will be paid, the priest/pastors will feed but should they live largely at the expenses of their congregation? Oh, even God won't admire that😢 you hear of a priest owning a private jet yet own no business. Having a big school where only rich kids attend. Yet a priest 😢
