This is the most clear and concise basic soldering video I've seen. It's too bad people are busy arguing about an irrelevant subject like the pronunciation.
rochat Ya know, back in the day, clear and concise videos where mostly off limits to the ignorant. Nowadays there isn't a single video without a fight over whether or not the troll is real or fake.... I blame China.
M Drake It is, And for the life of me I don't understand it. They up our taxes every year for public schools and it does not seem to be doing any good.
now thats a perfect soldering job, you can see the wire form perfectly outlined. and im a big fan of the in line wiring when soldering as well, thats the way i was taught. great vid!
Excellent! Now, I really understood that we need to heat the joint and then touch the solder onto it, and not directly onto the iron! Damn, this is good! Thanks!
LOL I'VE BEEN DOIN THIS SO WRONG: - i just get the wires close enough to where they are touching. I don't wrap them together at all - I dont' secure the wires at all. they are usually just laying on the table - i would touch the solder to the iron at the same time as touching the wire - basically all my connections are a big clump of solder around two wires (looks more like a weld) RIP my connections
Wow, it has been difficult to find a good, informative video on soldering. Finally the information that I need! Thank you very much for the greatly informative video!
Thanks for taking the time to post this. I've been trying to heat the solder on the iron tip and then drip or rub it onto the wire. I'm going to go do it the right way now! Thanks!
That music was used in a Monty Python episode skit called "How to do it"...in the span of 90 seconds, the Pythons explained how to construct a box girder bridge, how to irrigate the Sahara, how to play the flute and how to rid the world of all known diseases and promised in future episodes to explain how black and white people could live in peace and harmony and how to reconcile the Russians with the Chinese...why wouldn't anyone listen....?
Thank you now I know where I went wrong trying this on motorcycle ignition wires last night. I had never done this before but thanks to your video I am confident it will be much easier now!
This answer is probably three years too late but I was just watching another video that says not to use more than 20-25 watt soldering irons for guitar work because anything hotter can damage the pots themselves.
Caleb Jackson just in time. I'm about to do some work on an ovation preacher deluxe. Excellent video dude ! Thanks for the tips. I wonder if he still around :-?
Caleb Jackson - you can get away with a hotter iron if you are careful. I just soldered a pot a few days ago with a 60w iron. You just have to be quick or you'll certainly cook the pot.
Excellent video! He is easy to understand, gives succinct directions and doesn't provide unnecessary information. The pacing is perfect, not too fast so you miss it and have to go back, but also not too slow that you want to skip forward. Short, simple and effective! Now I'm gonna go try soldering!
Thank you! I've watched at least 5 other videos, but this is the first one that actually shows a nice close up of the action and explains everything I wanted to know. I finally get it!
A superb demonstration,..yeah i was heating the solder and trying to drip it onto the wire,..now I know the correct way ..clearly illustrated,..and I really liked the way you did it three times to illustrate that it works everytime,..ty very much absolute thumbs up.
Thank you so much. You just solved about an hour of frustration. I just did three separate capacitors in about two minutes rather than twenty. That little flip trick really helped as well as thoroughly explaining tinning.
This was the best instructional video on TH-cam I've ever seen. All TH-cam videos should be made by someone as competent as you. I fail to find a single fault with your video style. Clear, to the point, well filmed, all in focus - both video and your commentary. Excellent work.
+joe mart What are you on about? I know what 'solder' means, I don't need to look it up, I just mean this his pronunciation is odd. But it turns out that's just how Americans say it.
Justin Cromberge Is it? As a literate American, and based on the fact that it has an L in the word, I pronounced it correctly as sowl-der-ing. Maybe it's a local thing?
Many thanks.Wish I’d seen your clear instructions before I wasted a lot of solder by holding it to the iron above the joint. Now I understand - heat the joint with the iron, then touch the solder to the joint.Much appreciated
It's ok. You live relatively close to the French. I'd blame them. Their entire language is based on pronouncing letters that don't exist or not pronouncing letters that clearly do exist. When in doubt, blame the French.
To be clear and possibly fair, I think many Brits don't actually say "at" when saying "not at all." But they definitely say "tall." The "t "slides right off one word and they put it on the next word. "Not e tall" might be what is actually said by a fair number of you cheeky blokes. ;)
good tutorial. I was a beginner and had to make a project for my school and it needed soldering. This was the first tutorial I found and I'm glad it was.
I'm just getting into soldering for small electronic projects for my daughter and I to do. This was very informative and helpful, thank you so much for posting. This cleared up nearly all the questions I had.
Hmm... A connection without large amounts of lead around it, it's like a revelation to me when thinking back about my most recent attempts. Thanks a lot for this simple yet highly educational video.
Thanks for an awesome tutorial! I just got a new stereo head unit for my car, and I decided I would learn how to install it myself (I knew nothing about car audio or electronics maintenance). I just practiced cutting/splicing/soldering on my old stereo setup in my living room after watching your video and getting a 40-watt kit (same one you have, actually). It works perfectly fine =D. Now I'll be ready for tomorrow when I work on the new stereo!
thank u for this video. I just started soldering and I found your video very informative for beginners. great commentary, easy to understand, and very clear close ups. keep up the good work!!!
I never understood exactly how it was done before I watched this video. Thank you - it was clear and instructive and it will save me a lot of frustration!
All the other bullshit tried to look professional, your vid is simple, easy, straightforward and you use regular words with a good speech. No comment on this vid, absolutely great! thanks
Thank you soo much!! Informative with a close up view shows me exactly how to do it! I already messed up a few things from doing it wrong, how you do is makes it easy and fast!
This video is so clear and helpful! I am just starting out with electronics and soldering, and this video was a tremendous help. I wish coldrestart had made a second video on soldering to PCBs...
thank you so much for posting this video since my grandfather has passed and only left me with a few of his tools and iron he used to solder my guitar for me but never taught me how. also as a side note whenever you flicked the solder onto the paper it made me laugh out loud cheers and thanks again!
Awesome video. Learning a lot already. Planning on building a prop from a kit and it requires that I solder wire together for some LED's, among other things like sanding and what not. This video will definitely come in handy when it comes time to get to work.
Thanks man. I've been doing this the wrong way and screwing up for years before I realized this morning that TH-cam was a thing and there was probably a video
I fucking loved this video. I'm a software developer and I started getting way too much into electronics, so this video was the perfect fit I needed to start. Thank you so much for it.
Thanks for the SOULdering tutorial, it was very useful. After I am done with my DIY project, I will go and get some SALmon later and cut it with a K-nife. The I will talk to me P-sychologist about my inability to keep silent letters silent .
This is the most clear and concise basic soldering video I've seen. It's too bad people are busy arguing about an irrelevant subject like the pronunciation.

M Drake Most of the time they blame Bush or Obama.
Anugs Keingrau You're right. I think the real blame is on ignorance in general.
M Drake It is, And for the life of me I don't understand it. They up our taxes every year for public schools and it does not seem to be doing any good.
Anugs Keingrau Don't forget-people payed taxes for your schooling when you were a kid.
I just discovered your soldering vid, very simple and to the point. Thanks for posting it.
Coldrestart, your video is straight to the point and very informative. Makes Expert Village look like a bunch of ametures.
Finally a thorough and to the point explanation. I forgot about the tinning and inline splice. Respect.
No wonder I couldn't solder lol I would alway touch the solder to the heat tip, thanks so much!!
MrMinecraftermc most common misstake
thanx man. i been doing it all wrong with huge blobs of solder. lol
but, after you were done, did your connections work? Thanks
I am just about to wire a model railway track and this demonstration has got me in the shed practicing. Thanks for making it so clear.
Barry. UK
Wow thats one of the best tutorials I have seen, straight to the point and very good joints demonstrated each time, GREAT job!!
Wow..makes so much sense lol. I've always been trying to drip the solder on like a knob. Thanks for the vid!
omg, you heat the joint! I'm so stupid...
+Tristan R. Join the club.
Oliv3 * yes you should heat the wire first
Dr. Choobie twin
I’ve been trying to put the solder on the iron and wiping it off
My dad was an electrical engineer, and yet your video taught me more than anything he did so many years ago. Thanks so much!
now thats a perfect soldering job, you can see the wire form perfectly outlined. and im a big fan of the in line wiring when soldering as well, thats the way i was taught. great vid!
Thanks for the useful video. You say 'sawder' a lot! Anyone in the UK will find this amusing or annoying. But thanks for taking the time to post...
I did was reading for this comment before saying anything haha.. yeah useful vid though
Uh, that's actually how you pronounce it.
IDrink2Much yeah, not in Britain.
Excellent tutorial.
god of war goated
Thank you very much for taking the time to post this.
I will now attempt to solder for the first time with your help.
Excellent! Now, I really understood that we need to heat the joint and then touch the solder onto it, and not directly onto the iron! Damn, this is good! Thanks!
LOL I'VE BEEN DOIN THIS SO WRONG:
- i just get the wires close enough to where they are touching. I don't wrap them together at all

- i would touch the solder to the iron at the same time as touching the wire
- basically all my connections are a big clump of solder around two wires (looks more like a weld)
RIP my connections
Lol all my connections look the same too
but, after you were done, did your connections work? Thanks
@That other Guy ahh funny, I understand... thanks
If your going to flick solder of the tip to tin it make sure your wearing safety glasses. Better to use a damp sponge
Paul Fallon 😜now u tell me.
That's why we have two eyes, mate.
One is a spare..duh!!!
Wow, it has been difficult to find a good, informative video on soldering. Finally the information that I need! Thank you very much for the greatly informative video!

I wish I would've found this video yesterday
Hahaha what happened?
Slash! Tech
His condom broke.
Did he solder a penis extender on it :P ?
Nice intro music.
Nice picture.

Thank you so much. i had to solder for the first time yesterday and watching this video made it so much easier.
Thank you now I know where I went wrong trying this on motorcycle ignition wires last night. I had never done this before but thanks to your video I am confident it will be much easier now!
Is my 25w soldering iron good enough for electrical guitar work? Like switching pickups and volume pots?
This answer is probably three years too late but I was just watching another video that says not to use more than 20-25 watt soldering irons for guitar work because anything hotter can damage the pots themselves.
Caleb Jackson just in time. I'm about to do some work on an ovation preacher deluxe. Excellent video dude ! Thanks for the tips. I wonder if he still around :-?

The mention of Radio Shack made me sad. Man, do I miss Radio Shack.
tcphll but not their prices!
Them but not their prices...yeah i agree!! No wonder they went out of business!!
Best how to video out there...basic and short. Thank you for making me a soldering expert in under five.
Excellent video! He is easy to understand, gives succinct directions and doesn't provide unnecessary information. The pacing is perfect, not too fast so you miss it and have to go back, but also not too slow that you want to skip forward. Short, simple and effective! Now I'm gonna go try soldering!
Thanks my homework was to watch a soldering video on TH-cam
Education has really become a racket. Your university president thanks you for making his Ferrari payment possible.
It was most likely high school hw..
"we first prepare the joint to be soldered" lol
This is the clearest and most succinct intro to soldering I’ve seen.
Thank you! I've watched at least 5 other videos, but this is the first one that actually shows a nice close up of the action and explains everything I wanted to know. I finally get it!
do you need flux for this?
Amel Salibasic No, however if you where doing this as a job most companies would make you.
What does that stuff do??
But what if the spy dead rings?
Uh... Then shout SPAH AROUND HERE!!!
Thank you for taking the time to put together a very concise, well produced, and above all, in-focus video.
A superb demonstration,..yeah i was heating the solder and trying to drip it onto the wire,..now I know the correct way ..clearly illustrated,..and I really liked the way you did it three times to illustrate that it works everytime,..ty very much absolute thumbs up.
I've heard of getting something second hand but he got this third hand? Wow he's really cheap
...don't know whether trolling or serious... :-(
Phyoomz
I was just yidding
+wesleyb82 got mine 10th hand
LethalCheese we think you missed the joke
Phyoomz No I get it but i actually got mine 10th hand
great video, "soddering"
soldering*
Yeah thats how it's pronounced
Cosmic Taco Cat usually depending on your accent (I didn't mean to sound rude if I did.)
Americans...
Vladmir Putin Russians...

What's sawder?
Very helpful video, though the pronunciation of "solder" as "sodder" is a bit distracting.
Best video on solder Award 🥇 This guy is the reason I love TH-cam
As a someone new to soldering I found this very helpful. Thanks!
Great video, but the way he says solder is very strange.
look up the word maybe?
+joe mart What are you on about? I know what 'solder' means, I don't need to look it up, I just mean this his pronunciation is odd. But it turns out that's just how Americans say it.
+ScarySquirrel Silent L.
As the Queen suggested.
:-)
SOWL-DER-ING not SAWD-ER-ING
He's American.
That is no excuse :)
No it's not, but that's just how most American's speak. ;)
Justin Cromberge
Is it? As a literate American, and based on the fact that it has an L in the word, I pronounced it correctly as sowl-der-ing. Maybe it's a local thing?
Making a big deal out of nothing.
This is just brilliant. I used to hate soldering but now i love it thanks to this guide.
Many thanks.Wish I’d seen your clear instructions before I wasted a lot of solder by holding it to the iron above the joint. Now I understand - heat the joint with the iron, then touch the solder to the joint.Much appreciated
can't get used to it being called "sauder", when the spelling is clear
Brits also say "not at tall."
But the spelling is clear: not at all.
I never realised I said not at tall

This was an excellent tutorial on soldering and an excellent tutorial in general. Extremely concise and awesome.
I don't care how you talk, all the info was spot on! so helpful. Thanks heaps :)
this man taught me in 4 min what i couldnt learn in several months. You sir, are solder god.
A very elegant aproach to soldering.
Really effective to boot!
Hmm... A connection without large amounts of lead around it, it's like a revelation to me when thinking back about my most recent attempts. Thanks a lot for this simple yet highly educational video.

Thank you so much, never soldered in my life, and I now understand the basic, just ordered a 30w starter kit for general stuff. Best video ever
Thank you coldrestart. I have been using this video for years as a day-one soldering instruction tool for our high school freshmen. Fantastic work.
My soddering skills are now more refined. Thanks.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. My son is learning to solder and this video helped him. You are awesome.
That's a really clear explanation of how to solder for impractical people like me - thanks!
TH-cam is my new best friend next to Google. Life made easy.
Thank you!
Great video man. Simplest one out there and right to the point on basic soldering techniques.
thank u for this video. I just started soldering and I found your video very informative for beginners. great commentary, easy to understand, and very clear close ups. keep up the good work!!!
I never understood exactly how it was done before I watched this video. Thank you - it was clear and instructive and it will save me a lot of frustration!
Thank You for taking the time to show this. Excellent video.
probably the best "how to" video iv'e seen. didn't know they existed
thank you so much this is by far the best video on how to solder
All the other bullshit tried to look professional, your vid is simple, easy, straightforward and you use regular words with a good speech.
No comment on this vid, absolutely great! thanks
exactly what I was looking for..very basic, no-nonsense.. to the point, thanks for the video :)

Thank-you! I'm brand new to all this. You answered many of my questions with this video. Thanks again!
This video was really helpful for me. Thanks for making this video. Now I can solder wires properly.

Very concise & clear explanation - very good tips - one of the best for DIY videos - VERY USEFUL! If only more tool/work videos were this good.
Thanks, gave me that soldering boost of confidence I needed to get the job done! :)
Awesome video. Learning a lot already. Planning on building a prop from a kit and it requires that I solder wire together for some LED's, among other things like sanding and what not.
This video will definitely come in handy when it comes time to get to work.
You have done the best soldering that I've seen on TH-cam!
awesome stuff! easy to follow even for somebody like me who has never ever even picked up a soldering iron until now - thank-you sir!
You are the man, thank you so much for this tutorial. Straight to the point! Do more!!!
Thanks man. I've been doing this the wrong way and screwing up for years before I realized this morning that TH-cam was a thing and there was probably a video
Excellent video ... i never thought of heating the wires and dripping onto them ....defo going to use this information ... many thanks
Just wanted to say that you have amazing talent in teaching, it really seems you could teach anyone anything, please more tutorials
Wonderfully clear and well photographed. I can see exactly what I've been doing wrong. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, lots of helpful tips. Basically you changed the way I solder.
Excellent video. Well done, well spoken. Very helpful. Gifted communicator.
I fucking loved this video. I'm a software developer and I started getting way too much into electronics, so this video was the perfect fit I needed to start.
Thank you so much for it.
No bullshit. Just info and demo, straight up. Thanks man, great video.
Very good and simple guide. Thanks for your time, friend.
Very Helpful and straight to the point. Thanks!
You make it look easier than breathing, Thanks.
Great video! Thanks! It's a lot simpler than I thought it would be.
this is such a professional and articulate video what the hell mind blown.
Great video. That's the way I was taught to solder and I haven't had a connection fail yet.
Excellent lesson... Thank you for the great, detailed explanation.
Nice coverage of the basics, thanks.
Thanks for the SOULdering tutorial, it was very useful. After I am done with my DIY project, I will go and get some SALmon later and cut it with a K-nife. The I will talk to me P-sychologist about my inability to keep silent letters silent .
