Glory glory glory, let US lay that burden down. Let US heal the pain and the hurt. There will still be hard times, there will still be death and disease, but we can still be kind to everything.
No musician has ever brought me to tears until this very moment.
Understand your reaction to her, but you need to get out more, and listen to more music !!!!
Bless You Odetta with the most powerful and extraordinary Voice and Presence and still so very Beautiful ❤❤❤
Praise God
stunning and moving, She'll be remembered
From the soul of all of humanity past and present
The voice coming from that frail body sends goose bumps down my spine
What a voice for us people.
OH MY GOD!!! This woman is amazing!!! Tears to my eyes.
In the summer of 2008, I was road-tripping with a friend and went to Bridgeport, CT because I wanted to see the Barnum Museum. We got to town in the early evening and checked in at the Holiday Inn just down the street from the museum. Being a nice summer evening, we went out and walked around a bit, and after enjoying pizza and wine at a local spot, we came out of the restaurant and heard some music in the little public park across the street.
So we sat down on a low wall, and there were a few dozen people listening to an old woman who was singing along with a single accompanist. She had a kind of rough, honest, life-experienced voice, filled with human emotions, cracking jokes, slightly naughty as she encouraged the young folks to explore their natural urges.
Her singing presenting the human condition.
I enjoyed the concert, and at the end she invited people to buy a CD. I figured I would help out this poor old lady by buying a disk. I felt magnanimous and generous, what a nice guy I was!
Before the end of the year I heard an announcement on the radio. Odetta died in December.
"During her lifetime, she performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to bohemian nightclubs and coffeehouses and released several recordings. She became one of the most prominent folk singers of the 1950s and '60s, influencing artists such as Joan Baez, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan, who says that her singing first turned him on to folk music."
Odetta? That's who's CD I bought at that little summer night free concert in Bridgeport.
Ain't that a-rockin'?
her voice sounds with the thousands who have come before her, releasing their voice so that they may finally sing and we may finally hear. That is soul.
Beautiful, amazing, Amen. 💞
A once in an era artist magnificent such passion Gods gift to us all.❤
All my time in the military Odetta kept me alive
Infinite Beauty Resounds!
Peace,
cc
this beautiful daughter of america and AFRICA! odetta--no more pain, you've laid your burden down. THANK YOU for sharing your gift! HALLELUJAH
@@cowboykelly6590 Would you be able to tell me what this beautiful person died of ??? Many thanks. From Australia 🇦🇺 ♥️
As a sound engineer I had the honor to do sound for a performance by Odetta. To say it was moving, surreal, religious, ethereal is not doing it justice. She was amazing, I knew I was in the presence of greatness. The Shure Beta 58 microphone she used has never been sung or spoken into again...
Man !...you did a very good job, ...apart of her unbelievable voice of course !
I am sure it was a memorable experience. I wish I had been given that opportunity. May she rest in peace.
Mesmerizing!
I am so blessed to have heard this beautiful voice from this beautiful soul...may you always touch others .. be at peace.. you are loved forever
Wow ! If this doesn't give you chills, check your pulse !
Älskar härliga ärliga underbara Odetta
My God.....i'm speechless.
I've been listening her for years. Her voice is just as strong as it was 30 years ago. I just love her! RIP dear Odetta, you left an indelible mark.
La vidi tantissimi anni fa, in una trasmissione televisiva!!!, E, nonostante la situazione, mi sembro' di ascoltare un'intera orchestra, nella sua voce.
THANK YOU ODETTA!
She's so beautiful 💜
Stand up put your hand on your heart and know who are in the presence of greatness.
Amen
praise God!
Glory be to God
I had the honor to work as a tour-producer for ODETTA on a couple of tours in Austria. She was one of the most amazing people I met in my life, and we had some very touching moments together. Thank you Odetta!
I am so sad that I did not get a chance o hear her in person. What a talent!
Right there is the reason I can't go to such live perfomance, I just burst out crying in puplic.
I've been listening to this at least once a month the past 5 or so years. It just comes in my spirit and I Gotta turn her on
She still gives me chills. What a voice.
Odette, I know you are in heaven singing with all God's other angels. I annot even imagine what it sounds like, but with you and the others, it is no doubt reverberating magnificent! And if I ever can go to heaven you will be the first I want to hear singing, we are lost without you.
This was my go to song at church
I had no idea this 'Pillar of Spiritual Strenght' still stood in these final days.....Her longevity is a gift along with those spirituals that come from WAY DOWN..........!PRAISE THE LORD!

No accompaniment, and the acoustics added to the spiritual being in this woman shining out of her like a torch in the darkness.

There is so much rhythm in her singing
Wow.
Just amazing.
Rest your beautiful soul.
This is a great recording of a one of a kind singer just months before her death. I saw he once in 60s at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. She was powerful and mesmerizing. I love that this was a cappella, just a great voice and a Shure M58.
BEAUTYFUL VOICE ....AMEN
Love the woman
love her**
Wow! A friend posted this and I loved it. So for all of those that need a bit of soulful music to soothe your mind and weary soul, have a listen you won't be disapointed.
'Beautiful!'
I wish I could have attend something great like this.
I don’t know if I ever told you, but first about 3 years , Odetta husband, Jim Gordon, was my partner. We proudly presented “folk music concerts” all around California.
She was almost a spiritual presence…far beyond an entertainment. A force of nature
Look up “freedom” by odetta in her prime, and try your hero a tear from your eye
I moved on, and do did Dan. But I can still hear her. She died shortly after this piece
A national treasure.
Rest in peace.
I was her musical director in the mid 80's and played piano with her and her band "The Nashville Huggies". (the name she gave us.) She was the most gentle, spiritual person I have ever known and it was real honor to have worked with her.
Could you tell me when and what this lovely person died of, please ???
what a voice listen to the echo stunning ,i will carry her burden
Thx for sharing Rick....
