    An excellent tour through some very striking and inspiring work. I love the ambiguity and the dark mood of these images. They are just enough beyond the boundaries of normal life to become compelling art and powerful social commentary, and yet they are close enough to be plausible. "Beauty" is a strange and yet true word to use for these scenes. It seems to me that Crewdson is a master at working the gauzy world that exists, dreamlike, between reality and fantasy. He is a bit of a magician. Thank you, Tatiana, for the fascinating journey!

    I remember seeing his work in a documentary about him on Film & Arts many years ago. Very inspiring and hard work just to get 1 perfect photograph. In that episode about him you could see all the work behind the photo of the car in the snow driving away. His work is cinematic and seems like you could create your own story by looking at the pictures.

    He says his influences are Edward Hopper, David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock among others but I think he owes a debt to the amazing pictures of O. Winston Link. 50s small town large format night photography with artificial light. On top of that they have real local people acting and steam locomotives all in one frame. A true pioneer.

    I describe what he does as shooting movie posters. His photos may not be a scene that could be taken directly from a film and made into a poster. But they are orchestrated to partially inform what the movie is about.
    And hint at how it could be.
    Which is an under appreciated part of the marketing of movies. Movie posters fell into always doing a collage of the characters from the movie. Each one looking off into space.
    Good movie posters can accentuate the art of cinema if the movie is done well.
    And can boost the audience's affinity for a film.

    I remember being thrown by his comment "I don't actually like to take the photo myself" (paraphrased). It made me re-evaluate what photography is. He directs his images. It's almost the entire opposite of the decisive moment, and yet the precision with which everything in frame is prepared is equally decisive when it is time to actually capture the scene. I also try to remove 'reference' or obscure time and this throws in the need to consider post-production beyond the basics, to remove signage particularly. As (I think) Crewdson himself acknowledges, this manipulation started early in the darkroom, well before any digital manipulation. Another approach to this removal of reference was done by the Tomato collective where they simply blocked out any advertising or signage with loud purple rectangles. I can't find that specific example but similarly they removed architecture from landscapes in their book Bareback... nostos.jp/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/nsts-08404-3.jpg
    Anyway, babble aside. Thank you for another thoughtful production.

    I think the old thumbnail was brilliant. A wonderful foto, eyecatching. It made me want it on my wall.
    The algorithm is a thankless master, I know. What I'm trying to do is merely express how I felt with the old one, having so much more "zest".

    Good video about photographer Gregory Crewdson. The one thing I've notice with his photos is the way he creates a cinematic still photograph. They look like some movie still or poster, the central point is the story. I don't know how he create them with a 8x10 view camera. I used a 4x5 view camera for a college class, it was a pain to carry around and set up. If you want to own one, good luck, you'll need it. I don't know who are, but stop bothering me with those lottery scams! They're as fake as a six dollar bill. I don't answer that trash!!!

    I don’t know that we can learn much from Gregory Crewdson’s photography. Is it saying that without an army of actors and technicians we won’t be able to be a photographer? If his photos make us more aware of the everyday world we live in or the worlds we might pass by that are occupied by others then it has achieved something but is this a sustainable way to achieve such a small effect? I don’t know if I’m being fair or not but the feeling doesn’t go away.

    • @TatianaHopper
      @TatianaHopper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Roger thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, those are very fair questions but I believe very much beside the points made in the video, I don’t think he ever says that his photos make us more aware of the everyday world nor does it mean that we need an army of people to photograph what’s important to retain is that Crewdson directs a photo much like a film director who doesn’t necessarily need to press the on in the camera for the movie to be about his vision / story he wants to tell. Much to be learned with him if we actually focus on what his photos are saying and of course how he presents them to us formally speaking :)
      Thank you for watching!

    • @rogerhyland8283
      @rogerhyland8283 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TatianaHopper thanks for your reply. I just cant get my head around it i suppose. I ask myself, how is he any different from a film director, or any person at all, who conceives and designs something with the intention that others will execute the design and construction. I feel there are distinctions but find it hard to articulate. No one expects an architect to build something with their own hands, so why bother what anyone else does. I guess my real question is has anything greater been achieved by his process. Could he have made photos that told his story as effectively without the cast of thousands. And the puritan in me says this can only happen in culture of great wealth. Movies cost millions, but millions of people buy tickets, stream and hire videos etc. At the very most, these are limited edition photos. They can only be purchased by museums and wealthy collectors. Books make them available to a slightly wider audience, of which i am one. But without significant private or public backing, a book alone couldn’t support this type of production. I know he’s sincere. Immediately his way of working made me think of a couple of other photographers, one whose name eludes me, who hires actors and builds sets to recreate elaborate but banal scenes of everyday life and the other David Lachapelle, who’s work and ethos i admire. But the scale of it all freaks me out, especially these days with so many natural and man made disasters going on. Anyway, i know its not really your job to take sides, just present the work as food for thought. Well it certainly made me think. All the best, roger.

    Чувак который так никогда и не научился снимать нормальную стрит-фотографию в репортажном стиле, или просто репортаж. Поэтому глядящему на его фотографии всегда непонятно чего здесь больше фантазии автора или хоть какой-то американской действительности. Вообщем это такие кадрики из Голливудских фильмов про придуманную американскую жизнь. Поэтому для меня лично он всегда будет третьестепенным фотографов, по отношению к тому же Франку. И действительно есть много фотографов, гораздо лучших чем он. Не люблю.

  • @pamarks
    @pamarks ปีที่แล้ว

    Crewdson has some cool work, but a lot of his stuff looks very tacky. He uses very harsh lighting that makes things look like they're on green screen. It's hard to explain what exactly is wrong with it, but a lot of his more recent images look like they're primarily idea-machines, tools for expressing ideas, not very valuable visually. Something about his suburban shots especially really rubs me the wrong way. Some of his work is, in my opinion, simply ugly. I don't want to look at it. I appreciate the idea, but I am repulsed.
