Triad lock is really my favorite locking system. It's self adjusting and lasts forever. It is deeper push to disengage, but it got easier and tighter over the years, and I find it very satisfying to use. A nice snap, and a confidence inspiring feel. Cold Steel is an indispensable pillar in the knife world, and I hope the new ownership doesn't fail to honor the name. People talk smack, but Lynn Thompson is a really good man, and I respect not only his work, but the man himself.
I just got mine today, and I am very happy with it. It will now be my EDC knife. And will live in the pouch I carry every day. I have the Clip Point XL version and its a slicing machine. Very useful in the kitchen. So I thing the Drop Point with 4 inch blade will work out nicely. I like the stone washed finish. It just looks right on the knife, and I have LOTS of knives and edged items. Been collecting since the mid 80's.
I own the Large and the XL Drop Point versions, the Large and XL Tanto versions, the SR1 Lite Tanto, and the 4Max Scout, and 3 more Cold Steel knives (Immortal, Counter Point 1 and XL versions). I have never spent over $95 for any one of them. I like them all. And I only carry 4 inch or longer folding knives. Cold Steel make great strong, budget friendly folding knives!
Let's not forget about the Spartan. In my opinion, it's a perfect fighting folder that also makes a great work knife. Probably the best 60 bucks I've ever spent.
I've got the SR-1 lite tanto and it's a beast, wish they would have gone with aus10a instead of the 8cr13mov but it still gets the job done. Might pick up a voyager based on your review.
Agreed. I have both the 4Max Scout and SR-1 Lite. To tell the truth I like ergonomics weight and balance of the SR-1 Lite better so much so I have thought about getting the S35VN SR-1. If they made a AUS10 SR-1 in the $100 range I be all over it!
Want one of those ,just the larger version and eventually that smaller one as well they look terrific and the Voyages are very good slicer by the ones I own.⚔️⚔️
Kevin, if I were to compare the recon 1 and the voyager, for toughness, ease of sharpening , and blade retention.. I’d give it to the voyager… first of all the voyager has a skeleton frame and the grivex is as strong as g10. With the liners the grivex is definitely stronger. I’d rather sharpen AUS10a over s35v any day and Cedric and Ada did a comparison of the two steels , AUS 10a had better edge retention. I also own knives with both steels and can get AUS 10a to a finer / sharper edge. Voyager is my winner!
I love this knife. So much so, I bought the clip point version too. Wish it had the blade jimping like this but it’s still fantastic. I don’t even mind the handle texture. Just use sand paper under the pocket clip area & it’s good to go.
The ONLY folder locking system I trust 💯 % is The Tri-ad Lock. I use my knives for real world work. I've had failures from other locks like Axis Lock, Liner Lock, Ball Lock and others, but NEVER the Tri-ad Lock. I don't need a knife to be drop shutty or a fidget toy.
Kevin thank for the review and reminder. From what I been be those that test blade steels, AUS10 is much closer to 154CM than VG10 in edge retention and durability. Not that there anything wrong with VG10
actually AUS-10 is closer to VG-10 than 154cm if all of those are appropriately heat treated what happens is that cold steel treats AUS10 so well it actually beat most VG-10 in hardness and almost matches other people's 154CM keep in mind that AUS10 has both of them beat in terms of toughness.
It's a new feature on the Drop Point and it's mostly for show , unless you do some skinning with it. But yeah the older version of the Voyages don't have jumping. 🙂💰🙂
Checked it yesterday. Did not buy it the handle is too thin for me. When doing hard work it will for sure bite into your hand unless you wear a pair of gloves…
It hurts me every time I see a USA made 4max. I sent mine in to be fixed and they lost it and replaced it with the crappy elite version made in Taiwan.
@@edrader you can get them for around $80 if you pay attention to sales. If you're carrying a 4" folder you're not too worried about weight. The Recon 1 is simply a better knife
@@sgsheff if i ever see a recon 1 clip point for 80 bucks i'll buy it. the knife is heavier than i care for so the voyager at the same size but lighter was a better fit for me as a hiking knife
@@sgsheff i agree. and it was down to those two knives for me! i actually cancelled the order for the recon 1 last night and ordered the voyager. as an edc i prefer sub 4 ozs and 7.5 - 8". my current favorite edc is the we esprit in titanium. i also love the spyderco kapara. but when i hike in remote places with my photography gear i want a large, lightweight, rugged folder in my knife pocket. i have several trips planned this summer and fall and the voyager was the knife i chose, for now!
Kevin , You got to get the XL Drop Point Voyager, they are only $67 on Amazon Right Now , it's a Fantastic Blade and Probably the BEST Bang for Buck Blade on the Market Period....... 👍🖖

Thanks for the review, Kevin. I got the XL for Christmas and I STRONGLY recommend that you get your hands on one!

AUS10 SR-1 would be THE SHIT, I would buy one in each style
The XL version of this knife is great and this large version, is "excellent"!!! Great review...

It would be interesting to see how it fits in the pocket and some real life use as well. Thanks!

U should compare to the ultimate hunter
I hope the new guys do something about the pocket clips.
😂 I collect cold steel knives but carry none just because of that awful clip. Such a shame

just got mine from Midway USA doe 59.99 free shipping love it !
