Imagine if Garmin incorporated this into their next watch. Then the smart caddie would actually be able to track wedge yardages accurately. That would be next next level.
I bought the DeWiz early on. The first model was not working correctly so they replaced it. I bought it to help me shorten a long back swing, dial in my wedges, and flatten my swing. It worked for 1 out of 3 - wedge swings. Otherwise, it was not helpful and far too expensive to not be all that and a can of soup!
You did nail the one issue I have with this device. My pre-shot routine doesn’t include the pause required to have it activate. I find that to be difficult even in the sim. I am not used to coming to a complete pause before I pull the trigger. It would be nice if DeWiz would record your preshot routine so it could identify when it should record.
This is why I love your channel. You are always doing in depth demonstrations on products I never heard of, but suddenly can’t live without!😂 Great video Gabe…..
For years I've used the now-discontinued Suunto G6 golf watch. It measures tempo, backswing length, and would approximate swing speed based on the club selected. For years it was an amazing tool, and I've been waiting for someone to create a new wearable. This might be it, but the price is pretty steep.
Was interested until I saw the price. 😢. For that price it would need to be a full featured golf watch with Arrcos strokes gained data gps distances etc…. Sorry $700 is way too much for what it is
$300-400 and I would have considered it. You can get a good amount of instruction for $700 that would still be a lot better than this. Really cool tech, but wildly overpriced.
Because deWiz is monitoring this thread, I have a question for them. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have the Suunto G6 watch. It is no longer being manufactured, and this is my third (and likely last) one. I use it to measure length of backswing, tempo (along with speed of back swing and down swing), and swing speed (you can change your club setting to get that). I value most tempo and backswing length. My question: what would you say is the value proposition to switch devices? (I don't care about the price, btw.) What will I be glad to have when I switch to the deWiz?
hello enjoyed your review. been thinking about this device. 77 and a mid 20s handicap,i am sure I could benefit. I dont have indoor simulator, would be at a local driving range. would it work the same? also can I put it in my pocket in silent mode, then review my result? or does it work best stationary on a stand? thanks John
Interesting. It looks like it might help with some of my issues. I just wish these things were in a more realistic price range. This probably will come down over time.
Hi Gabe, love this channel, your enthusiasm is so refreshing. I just watched your how to shoot lower in golf. Anyway my question to you how did you figure out your distances with each club. I use a rangefinder at the range i can see how far the targets are but the balls at say a 7 iron distance i cant really tell where they are landing and how far they roll. so what ive done all my golfing life is just add 10-to 15 yards for each club because i know i hit my sand wedge with a full swing 75 Yards. I cant really afford one of those high dollar simulators. you should do a video on this subject....thanx John (USN Retired)
Good idea for a video. I play 2-3 times a week so just a lot of reps. Simulator’s definitely help too. What your doing as well as trial and error on-course is probably the best way.
Its £560 in the UK, that is 20 lessons with a Pro!! The Skypro Swing Analyzer did all this and alot more fir $200 but for some crazy reason they have discontinued its manufacture, still have mine but if it ever dies I am lost. Bring back the Skypro
A few years back I had a GSA device that clipped to the back of my glove and had similar functionality. I seem to remember it cost in the region of $100-150. Much more sensible pricing. I may just dig it out again.......
I got this as a gift. Love it. But it can be overwhelming at first. Gabe, you mention and show the "on course" mode which I do not have on my (latest version installed) Dewiz app ...hmmmm . I am surprised you didn't go into the stimuli feature. Keep the videos coming!
$700? Wow....I had similar devices years ago like the old swingtip that would clip on to the club. This has a little more options but costs 5x more. Maybe it will come down in price to a realistic one that real people can afford. I will say this, between equipment costs and green fees, the golf industry in really dedicated to keeping this a rich man's game.
Great review Gabe (as always). Do you think that I can wear this on the course above my Garmin S62 and still get accurate results? I literally have a deWiz in my cart online right now and wanting to know if I should pull the trigger.
I am confused as to why there isn’t an option to use your Apple Watch and pay a subscription. Or maybe the question is, what hardware is in that device that makes it so special because it seems like it would be an accelerometer and Bluetooth. I know the short answer is easier to develop for dedicated hardware but still 600 is to much when someone will just clone this into an Apple Watch app
I’m not sure of the exact tech but there are 2 sensors on the device, so there must be something else at work. But who knows. Maybe someday they can make that work.
Another great review, Gabe! If I don't couple deWiz with a simulator for distance/dispersion/spin stats, would it still be effective for swing correction if I don't have those stats to determine that the correction is working? Trying to understand its usage at the driving range: Would I have to remember which shots were good vs bad corresponding to the recorded shots in deWiz? Any way to add comments/notes for the swing taken in deWiz? For on course mode, I am assuming you have to use the app before each swing to record which club you are using?
Great questions. So there is plenty you can work on without knowing exact distances. In a range environment you’ll see ball flight and get a good idea of distance. deWiz keeps track of all the shots as well as your averages so you can track progress over time. For on course mode you need to launch the app. And you can refer to it after each shot, or just after the round if you’re good at remembering the holes. I did it after each shot.
There is a feature if you like a shot you can press the dewiz button and it will log it as a favorite shot. I video my range sessions and then match it to the Dewiz shot log.
I should add that on the range, I am constantly looking at the Dewiz app after each swing to try and dial in the feel and repeatability of the swings that I setup parameters for. So if I am working on tempo (like Gabe did), I'll check each swing to see what it's at until I get the 2.8 to 1 or better. I'll work on this 50 swings until I am 70% consistent and the next day I do 30 swings with 80% consistency, so on and so forth, until I lock it in. Then I work on my next issue, like transition. I can also set the stimuli to "shock" me when the swing falls outside my set parameters, providing instant feedback. At least now, I can work on a specific part of the swing path and understand where I am at. Have not started the Wedge training yet.....
If I am hitting on the range, I have the DeWiz information on an iPad. I hit a shot and then look at the data. I do the same thing in my simulator. It’s pretty amazing. My favorite way to use the device is to record my swing when I am hitting it really well. Then during the year if I get off, I go back and look at the differences. It’s a really easy way to figure out what’s going on and find a way to get back on track.
Solid review. Solid video and great tech. Can yiou wear this device on your trail hand instead of the front hand? I'm interested in the HackMotion device which could show my wrist inflection and paired with this device i could see the real movement of arms, and wrists.
To answer your question, we always suggest that the device is worn on the lead wrist because when we are providing data insights from pros, user base, test subjects, etc. - the device is always worn on the lead wrist. HOWEVER, if you were to want to wear it on the trail wrist, while the data would be different compared to the same swing with the data collected on lead wrist, if you're always wearing it on the same position then your numbers are YOUR NUMBERS and you would just be benchmarked off of that data!
Great tool - you could get dialled in enough to only have one wedge. But once again Price. £550 in the UK 700 in the USA. I am no marketing guru but if this was the price of a wedge i.e. £150 there might be greater sales ? The average Joe does not want to or cannot keep shelling out hundreds per golf item. Top Tour Pro's don't buy golf gear.
I'm disappointed no one from deWiz responded. I'm about to go through a significant swing change--shortening my backswing to accommodate my advancing age--and I would have liked to hear what they had to say.
Hi Rich - not sure why our previous response did not go through, I'll try again. The first thing that really differentiates deWiz is the accuracy of our data. While we're aware that there are other platforms that may measure swing length and tempo, we have benchmarked our technology against all other motion capture platforms (GEARS, K-vest, etc.) and can confirm that our data is significantly more accurate than other wearable products. The Learning Stimuli (which is patented) also allows for IMMEDIATE feedback. You're not waiting for the swing to finish, then looking at the data and trying to figure out after the fact where the swing flaw happened. You're receiving the Biofeedback at the instant that breach occurs. When it comes to changing your swing length, this is vital. On-course capabilities along with being able to detect rotational forces (to measure steepening and shallowing) also is something that other products you find will not be capable of doing. Apologies again for the response being lost!
My problem is I know my tempo swing path and length are distinctly average , not sure I need the device to tell me that every shot. It’s how I change my swing ….
How is it possible that you hit a draw when ur over the top? That’s breaking the ball flight laws. I looked at ur screen and it’s not like it was a pull hook. It started straight and drew. If u actually came over the top it should start left and draw further left. Unless u have an open face, in which case it’ll curve right. Have you compared it with your bushnell or skytrak+ to see if the club path matches up?
It's important to note that the deWiz Transition number DOES NOT equal Club path. deWiz Transition is measured 8 inches into the downswing and plenty of players will have a slightly positive Transition while still producing an in-to-out path (we see this a lot with higher caliber players). This is caused by a shallowing of the club through Transition which deWiz will also measure.
Gabe I think your transition gets so out of whack because you aim so far right of the center of your screen that your brain knows it’s supposed to hit it into the middle so your gonna pull over it to get the ball in the middle. Idk if your launch monitor is aimed to the right or if it’s lined up in the center but I believe you would get rid of the over move if you just got some sort of alignment aid like a tee claw and had it lined up to the middle or even a little left and moved the ball way up in your stance! Ideally you want the ball at your shirt logo and with driver farther forward than that but it looks like you play it way back of that but it also makes sense you do that because your aimed so far right. As someone who also does most of his practice on a sim it really will affect your play if your not lining up properly over and over!
Imagine if Garmin incorporated this into their next watch. Then the smart caddie would actually be able to track wedge yardages accurately. That would be next next level.
Garmin already has it but it does on the club
