I really enjoyed The Northman. Went to see it twice. During the 2nd showing, I couldn't help but sing a couple of traditional viking songs during the trailers to really set the tone for everyone. I was eventually kicked out of the theater. But not because I was singing, but because I was completely naked. Very interesting day.

One of the best aspects of The Northman is how immersive it is. Like every Eggers film, they do an incredible job at making it feel like the time period and everything about the film made it feel like they just took cameras back in time

To be honest, diane foxington from the bad guys is like spamton from deltarune chapter 2 because they both wear glasses and they both make deals and i think i remember the fox girl say now's your chance to redeem yourselves like how spamton says now's your chance to be a big shot. When wolf talked to the fox girl on the stairs it reminded me of the original spamton fight in deltarune and when the fox girl was reavealed to be the crimson paw, it reminded me of spamton neo. Instead of rescuing wolf and the gang, i was expecting the fox girl to fight them instead and have wolf's soul turn yellow and be able to shoot things and wolf and the gang will be in minecarts and the fox girl wants to take wolf's body as a vessal and says he doesn't need his freinds. Wolf and the gang can either beat the fox girl up or break her strings and then they get an item and a shadow crystal and also marmalade is also kinda like queen since they're both selfish. Could someone please do a YTPMV of now's your chance to be a big shot where the fox girl sings now's your chance to be a big shot and also with sounds from the movie as the melody. Since matpat did a ness is sans theory, i could also see him do a diane foxington is spamton theory. Important to know about The Northman, I believe the budget was nearly doubled by Covid-related delays. It was originally going to cost about 40-50 million and likely would have released in a much more favorable market, but with delays bloating the budget up to nearly 100 million, it became almost impossible for it to make its budget back.

I cannot WAIT for Eggers' "Nosferatu" film, whatever it may end up being called. Between the VVitch, and the Lighthouse, it's clear Eggers can compose a seriously moody, foreboding, and "isolating" feeling picture. There are very few vampire films which are actually creepy and sinister-feeling, and I want Eggers to do for vampires what the VVitch did for witches. I'm particularly hopeful because he isn't afraid of doing period pieces - and the less studio interference, the better.

Hearing that The Northman is bombing is really surprising to me actually. As someone who works at a movie theater, nearly every one of our Northman showings are booked up if not pretty full.
Hearing it’s production had some meddling involved is a little disheartening considering Eggers is an artful director with a lot of vision hailing from A24, which is known for its weird and out there movies. Hoping his next project won’t have the same treatment, I’ll be watching it either way though.

I wish the movie did a better job establishing the world of it. Only the main characters are andromorphic while the rest are humans, and then there're also non-speaking animals which was pretty jarring and added nothing to the overall story. Not to mention they dumbed down the humans like they all have the IQ of a 5 year old or something, except maybe the chief police lady.
I could have looked pass this if it's an old movie that came out 20-30 years ago, but for a modern day family film, I'd expect the creators to put more thought into the world building.

@@ryantheanimator1156 Yeah the universe was really weird. I don't know if the settings are like that in the book it was based on, but I had trouble with getting the movie's universe especially how human characters were reacting to animal characters. Like somehow wearing a mask suddenly makes you non suspicious wolf? I know that part was probably a joke, but there were so many instances like that throughout the movie, even in serious scenes, the logic kinda took me out at few points. Kinda made me appreciate Zootopia more on world building.
Still loved the animation and action scenes and also the character designs. I heard that the director said he would love to do a sequel, I just hope they get better script on the sequel.

Even if the plot for the Bad Guys was simple and predictable, everything else was still extremely well executed. Even if it won't making any best animated films lists anytime soon, there's no doubt it's easily DreamWorks best non-sequel in a decade (since Rise of the Guardians I would say). As for the Northman, it's not everyday you see an indie studio attempt to make a historical epic, but somehow it's been done. The Northman is a great Shakespearean story akin to Hamlet. Focus somehow managed to make an artsy and thoughtful historical epic while prioritizing characters over the scope, which is certainly an achievement. My personal ratings for these two great films:
    The Bad Guys: 8/10
    The Northman: 9/10

Yea I think anyone who loved the bad guys and is craving more should absolutely check out Cagliostro or another Lupin III movie for sure! This movie was very strongly and lovingly based on that series. Especially it’s bold animation style, the assorted cast of characters and the theme of criminals with morals or “bad guys” who aren’t actually that bad. Lupin iii originally found a lot of its inspiration from western cartoons, so it’s super cool and poetic the way this goes full circle.
A lot of modern anime and Disney / Pixar have been inspired by Lupin III and reference it so I always recommend it to animation lovers for the history and inside jokes. You only need to watch one Lupin movie or a few episodes to be in the loop tbh so it’s not an overwhelming endeavor like One Piece or trying to read marvel comics or something
All the Lupin movies are independent stories you can watch in any order and don’t need to have seen any of the show. They’re all pick up and go and a lot of fun. And a lot of them are free to stream online so that’s great
Although if you mainly liked the Bad Guys for being furries you’re out of luck lmao the Lupin characters are always human. Maybe check out Miyazaki’s Sherlock Hound instead.

Seeing The Light House and The North Man in different circumstances definitely affected my first experience with films.
With The Light House, I saw it in a tiny mom and pop theater in Arizona that was sold out. The tiny theater screen even made the movie seem much older and grainy. It’s one of my all time favorites.
The North Man I saw in a mostly empty Cinemark theater in Denver and it did subvert my expectations. I do love it and feel like it’s more accessible. But, I wanted more out of a couple parts of the movie and wanted other parts to be shorter. 7/10 is definitely fair.
But, Eggers is my favorite director now, and I’m excited for his next project.

I would also argue there’s a third reason it exists, that being the directors long running passion for it: The Bad Guys is actually Pierre Perifel’s directing debut (at least in terms of full feature film) and it took a lot of development to get where it was, with Perifel aiming to succeed in getting in finished, not just for his career, but for the sake of all on the team. Prior to this, his other director credit was on the animated short film Billy (a cult fave among the modern cartoon communities I’m in),
Regardless and with all that said, I know you didn’t mean to imply that the director didn’t have a passion for this project or anything, I mean you are right that those are the two primary reasons. I just figured I’d comment all this, since I was also surprised that YMS didn’t mention anything about Bad Guys being a directorial debut (not that it’s a bad thing he didn’t mention it, I’ve just heard a lot of other reviews say it)

@@ItWasRevealedToMeInMyDreams I don't think most general movie goers know the names of actors like Dafoe or Taylor Joy - they probably see them and recognise them, sure, but in the sort of "Hey that's the actor from movie/show X". And especially if they're playing side characters in a movie like this and barely appear in marketing material, they will have some but not enough of a sales impact imo. I agree that this film probably needed an A list type lead to get more normies to come watch the film. Although I thought Skarsgard was a great choice and did very well, but he's even further from a household name than the aforementioned Dafoe and Taylor Joy. Problem with getting an A lister lead tho is that it would probably double the budget just because of the salary lol

I think it's for the best that Robert Eggers goes back to smaller scale movies. He's so talented at what he does that he feels like way too much of an auteur director for all the bureaucracy that comes with budgets of that size and studio moviemaking. You can tell that he thrives in the more intimate settings because Anya Taylor-Joy returned as a major character and Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson and Kate Dickie all appeared in smaller cameos. I really don't see them all being here by accident - they clearly love working with the man. Hope the next thing we see from him is another $5M-$20M arthouse film where he can be left to do what he does best.

That Rus’ Village scene was incredible. That was one of the most viscerally brutal scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie. As someone who is a history buff and fascinated with ancient warfare I’ve read a lot about the sacking and razing of villages and this the first time I’ve ever seen in a movie a palpably realistic and truly grim and brutal picture of what it meant for a village or city to be sacked and razed by savage barbarians like the Norse Vikings. Truly epic film making

The reason for this is because all the non-main characters being human ties into the bad guys origin story. All the human characters were afraid of the bad guys before they became the bad guys since they’re scary animals to humans (wolf, snake, tarantula, shark and piranha) so they fought to that if they’re just gonna be afraid of them they might as well be the bad guys, this concept wouldn’t really function is every background character weren’t human

    • @william3100
      @william3100 หลายเดือนก่อน

It would work if most of the non-main characters were non-scary animals. It also makes things feel inconsistent in world building to not have any other anthropomorphic animal apart from the narratively important ones.

There was some obvious padding of runtime in Northman. Kudos to the filmmakers that are able to make the middle of their film engaging, like Doctor Sleep

I used to run a Reading Club at an elementary school. Kids basically come in, read a book (we had our own library), take a test on it, earn points and prizes. 'Bad Guys' was one of the most popular books. I don't even know how many times I've read it (sometimes kids weren't too great at reading on their own so would sit down and read to them). Can't wait to see it.

I don't understand the worldbuilding complaints against The Bad Guys. Do people complain about the worldbuilding of Looney Tunes? Regular Show? The Muppets?
The answer as to why, it's that they wanted to use demonised animals as a metaphor for demonised or criminalized demographics but didn't want into the Zootopia problem of accidentally reinforcing bioessentislism in trying to explain why in the worldbuilfing. Honestly? fair call.

    • @auralunaprettycure

Yes! I agree with this. There’s been a few other people in the comments saying something similiar (essentially agreeing with you that it has metaphorical meaning,
Although your comment really does an eloquent job at breaking down that metaphorical meaning.
Sadly, most of the comments making this point are not getting many likes, and getting buried. The only comments that are getting a decent amount of likes are saying things like “The Bad Guys is poorly written / doesn’t make sense, but at least the animation is decent”, which is a sentiment I am very disappointed to see happening when I loved the film, myself. But eh, I guess that’s just natural to happen, this isn’t exactly the best place to find celebration of the film

    • @william3100

Those other products are different because they are more consistent. The Bad Guys literally only has the main characters as animals, but no one else. If only the important characters are one thing, it makes things feel off and obviously for the plot. Also, the discrimination doesn't work because they are people, too. Humans only fear or hate animals because they aren't like humans. This also makes the message feel more cheesy and generic. This film just isn't that great.

I wouldnt say that the lack of star power screwed the Northman at the box office. Rather it was how bad the marketing for it was. I remember the first time I heard about it was at least a month beforehand when watching the preview trailers in the cinema. Usually movies of this calibre need more time to get exposure and build some hype around it.

For context: The Bad Guys is based on a children's book series. I have no idea if that influences any story or character design critiques being borrowed from the books as I never read them, but good to know that it's an adaptation and not a totally original property.

    • @william3100
      @william3100 หลายเดือนก่อน

Why is it good that it's an adaptation and not a totally original property? Totally original properties are much more interesting and haven't been a big thing in cinema for a long time.

For me, The Northman was just as good as The Lighthouse. Obviously the scratch different itches and have different goals, and I'd say The Northman succeeded in achieving its goals with flying colors. I was really pulled into how the story felt like both a Viking epic and Shakespearean tragedy, fitting considering its origin in the Amleth tale. As some who really enjoys ancient legends and Shakespeare, and also badass Viking stuff, I was doomed to be a sucker for the movie, even if it wasn't as good as it was, but thankfully Robert Eggers delivered another fantastic movie. I hope the film can get more recognized once it goes to streaming platforms, because even if it bombs at the box office, it deserves to get more recognition than it has received. Though that's true for all of Eggers's movies really.

Tbh the Northman was a letdown for me, I really enjoyed The VVitch and The Lighthouse, but the Northman felt less like an arthouse film and more like a standard Hollywood movie. I did enjoy the cinematography and acting but on the whole it just felt too safe. Not surprised to hear there was studio meddling though, now I wonder what the film originally would have been like
