    In my bag I carry a 10mm glock & a .22 rifle
    10mm handguns can take down a bear & mountain lions
    & the .22 is good for hunting small game
    Technically I also have a fully kitted out AK-103(flashlight, grip & scope) &plate carrier that has all of my medical gear on it but unless I’m in an area where there’s wild hogs it’s mainly just in my trunk for any emergency or shtf situations

    I actually considered getting a plastic water bottle, what it ultimately came down to was durability, a metal water bottle can take more beatings and you can repeatedly boil water in it if you had to. But we all have our own preferences and strategies, so he may be fine.

    • @MadMinuteMan
      @MadMinuteMan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not only can a plastic water bottle only be used a couple of times to boil water, but when heat is applied to a plastic bottle filled with water, the leaching process is sped up rather drastically.
      When you drink that water, you're taking in some nasty chemicals. It should be fine if done once or twice in an emergency situation, but repeated intake of water contaminated with chemicals from plastic will really fuck with your liver and your kidneys.
      Always go for metal containers when boiling water, if you lack a metal container or knife, you can craft a stone knife and use that stone knife to carve a bowl out of stone or wood, preferably stone and use that crude bowl to boil the water.

      You want a high quality steel fixed blade knife. Pocket knife might as well be useless in a serious survival situation. Also a 300/1000 whetstone or a field sharpener is essential.

    I certainly love the last tip: If you're stuck in a survival situation, a book is great for moral and a *survival book* is even helpful. Although i'm not carrying yours yet, i am carrying one in my emergency rucksack in the car. A hatchet and those "pocket chainsaws" are also nice, esp. for cars. As far as a medikit goes: Imo the most overlooked items in those are a nail file, a pair of scissors for nails, something for tick removal (the particular item depends on personal preference i guess), hand sanitizer and some wound desinfectectant. (I throw these into all my medikits.) Also, a nice pair of thick gloves is worth carrying.
    Other things i like to have around: The Titan Survival emergency sleeping bag and blankets, their SurvivorCord v1 (not the v2), the Bahco Laplander folding saw, the Morakniv Bushcraft Survival, some fatwood, a roll of toilet paper, a couple of packs of Kleenex, a snack and... wait for it: A bag of treats and a can of dog food for the dog plus folding bowls. You never know when you get stuck for the night when travelling with the dog: Traffic jam in winter/car breakdown with no cell service/...
    More of a car item imho: I also love to have a folding shovel on board. (Winter/mud/... you know...)

    • @chancecarlton8403

    • @kensen6490
      @kensen6490 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t say if you’ll actually need binoculars, it depends on your plans and if they’d be practical for your situation.
      As for the lifestraw, I think that should be used as a last resort if you can’t make water drinkable by boiling it. But even then, water filters ain’t hard to make, anyone can make activated charcoal.

    • @matt79de
      @matt79de 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Re. Binocs: Imo not much. A compass may add more value. The only actual survival use of binocs i can think of is cannibalizing them for their lenses to get some fire going. That can be had cheaper. Other than that they probably just add more weight than value.

  • @mukkaar

    Really for light, just get headlamp and backup small single battery led light, preferably both should accept AAA batteries so you can have couple spares if battery runs out. Don't bother with candles, lightsticks or torches. I get some people geek out with beeswax candles and whatnot, but come on, candle gives really puny light that's hard to use for anything useful, and there are much better firestarter methods that perform better, weight less and take less space.
    Headlamp is *the* most useful portable light source you can have for pretty much all activities. And just because it's technology, doesn't mean it's unreliable, brands like Petzl and Black diamond are extremely reliable. And it's very simple device anyways. For backup light, something like Fenix LD02 is pretty ideal. It's small, durable, uses batteries so you can have backup and it has clip so you can attack it to your cap for example.

    You can survive longer than 3 weeks without food, I got sepsis in 2020, thought I had covid because the symptom's were just like I had the flu and covid had just started..coughing, shuddering chills, splitting head when I coughed, stinky sweats, cluster headaches, loss of appetite, I suffered at home for a month without eating because I thought I'd just ride the covid out for two weeks, but I never got better, I started to feel like I was getting better but it never progressed to full recovery, so then went to the hospital and thats when I found out I was very lucky to have survived a very nasty case of sepsis.

    Comprehensive and sound. I usually skip something major like water purification, or a good light source. I wrestle with wanting a comprehensive minimalism-whatever that is. Some people are way happy to go full on apocalypse but I want to be a sneaky kind of basic ready. That feels more normal, and the stealth works for me. I get frustrated with security systems in museums etc. I makes me continuously reevaluate the bag basics, and consider other things like a hidden spot for my knife and saw. I get worried that the day you leave it will absolutely be the day you need it!

      Huge point you're making: Most folks prep for the wrong thing: A car wreck is a much more likely encounter than being stuck in the woods in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, torniquets can be improvised, but having a useful trauma kit included in the medikit certainly helps. Completely underrated.
