    Quick quibble: Truman was adopted *before* birth, not *at* birth--even his ultrasounds were part of the initial broadcast, and his birth was live on the air, when the studio was already his legal guardian. Great video, as always!

      @trinitylivingston1286 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They were waiting on at least one other ultrasound and the others were born at different times than when they were gonna make the show. So that's why they chose him and they didn't truly adopt him at birth.

    They live is one of my all-time favorite movies. I never knew it existed until one late night in 1997 I was flipping channels at about 1 in the morning looking for something to watch. I remember finding it on the opening sequence where Rowdy Piper was walking into the city and I remember seeing they live and thinking what the hell is this. That was one of the most awesome experiences to go through the whole Discovery process with the main character not knowing that aliens were involved. Very similar to how the audience was treated on the very first Matrix movie going down the rabbit hole and having so many questions and they are answered bit-by-bit. However I never realized and all the times I've seen that movie since that they live is scribbled in graffiti throughout the movie. Gives me another reason to go watch it again. Thank you

    I feel The Truman Show is ultimately about the relationship between God and Man/Father and Son, while also discussing the importance of freedom and free will while rejecting a safe and comfortable, but ultimately unfree life. Its much more a commentary on modern life as it pertains to our modern government gaining greater athority so we can feel safer and live easier lives while slowly removing our personal freedoms for this protection.

      Judson Joist you are confusing symbolism with the literal. God isn't an "imposter" in the Truman show, what he is saying is that Cristoff is a symbol of god. He's not saying that anyone was meant to believe that he was literally god.

    • @trinitylivingston1286

      I think that it's more about how society is fake and how much technology is taking over our lives to the point where were basically on public display when we go out in public. I mean, pretty much everyone has a mobile device that can record/take pictures of you with a click of a button and every store pretty much has video cameras up on the ceilings, so they can monitor whether people are stealing or not. Plus about how everyone just conforms to society, whether it has to do with going to college or not or even what you do in your freetime, what you wear, what you eat, and/or your physical appearance/physique.

    • @jettqk1
      @jettqk1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree the film is a commentary on freedom and free will, as well as society's hold over us. But more than the role of government, I think it has to do with how much we worship our stuff. Everyone in town is trying to keep Truman there by having him waste his money on new gadgets--a new lawn mower, a new car, a new house. While he's trying to save for Fiji, they would have him blow all his money on cars and houses so he can never leave. I see this as a commentary on our own lives. How many of us complain we have no money to travel or do the other things we want to do, but then we manage to find the money for the latest smartphone or brand new home decor?

    • @trinitylivingston1286
      @trinitylivingston1286 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jettqk1 exactly, many people are to focused on buying the newer cooler thing, like the new brand of clothing/gadgets/addictions sometimes and then they don't have enough money for even groceries/paying bills, let alone going on vacation somewhere. Also, about how society is able to control and manipulate us into believing that we need the next thing in order to be "happy," when really we don't. I also think that the government/society kind of has a bit of control on us though, in a way (like we technically could be recorded at any time by anyone/whatever we put online can be spread to other people and we can be controlled in other ways too).

    The rapid projection of sequential video images from an electronic display induces a trance-like state in the engrossed viewer during which deeper parts of the mind become more susceptible to suggestion. This process changes the neural network structure of the brain as artificial memory traces accumulate over time forming a strong drug-like dependence upon the medium for constant electronic stimulation producing a mind out of sync with nature and increasingly rewired for the frequency of the machine. Vibrating diaphragms and transient glowing screens repeatedly broadcast professional entertainers singing jingles and reading scripted dialogue in a carefully composed world of dramatized make-believe. A world of corporate propaganda designed to promote, not just the brand names of consumer products, but also the way of life and mental attitude that maximises their consumption...

    I've always had this /kinda/ Passion project about making a They Live sequal, but having it be more about seeing what we want to see in media. How even with the glasses some people don't see the aliens and the messages because they have bassically mentally blocked themselves from it. They choose not to see it.
    Or maybe someone else see's something, but it's totally different. The message will say "you should buy stuff" but what he sees is "you should die dude" and then he goes home and kills himself.
    Sometimes people don't see the intended message. Just the one they want.

      That movie's tunnel scene (the Wilder one, NOT the Depp version) is still one of the creepiest, most disturbing scenes out there. I mean, Who TF shows a chicken being decapitated in a kid's movie? Scene still trips my psychological triggers 40 years later. /shudder

    First time I saw They Live and Actually watched it ( because somehow I never came across it before then) was like 6 years ago. I was at the beach in our beach house one night flipping through tv channels. And I came across the opening credits to they live. Not knowing anything about it or even what kind of movie it was. I was a little buzzed from the beers and kept buzzed the whole time.
    So here I am 22 buzzed on the couch just watching whayever movie had started.
    Classic Film B movie Vibes start hitting me hard as it goes on. I didnt dare blink or turn the channel as I had never been more interested in what a movie was about or what was going to happen next. I remember that feeling like god I hope I dont have to pee anytime soon. Forgetting I can pause live tv. Idk what happened there.
    Soon as he put the sun glasses on that first black and white scene showing the alien corrupted being under a normal human being had me going Oh shit. This is really something. Why the hell habnt I heard of this. Is this some epic 80s b movie that just never got the credit it deserved? Little did I know about its Popularity then.
    I saw it one time. That was that night. And If i watch it again it will be One more time and I'll wait years or longer to watch it again. Why? It never gets old.
    Wanna see a really messed up funny gross 80s movie?
    It's called Maximum Overdrive. The original one. Alien ghost things take over Vehicles and Electronics even soda machine can kill people. Yeah imagine that scene. But mainly the ghost aliens like to take over 18 Wheelers. And there favorite thing to do? Hit a human body going 100 mph of course! Lol
    You like bloody b movies? This has buckets.

As for a suggestion: This may be a little too on the nose, but I'd love to see an analysis of how Lynch's Mulholland Drive and Bergman's Persona overlap; or, if you folks are able to look at a very new movie, how Scorsese's Taxi Driver and Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here overlap.
