Don't know if you remember them from last week but the two girls in the black tops are Jiu and Sua who are the lead/main dancers of the group and my top two biases of Dreamcatcher!! Sadly I don't know if they will ever fully blow up in popularity as their rock concept is always going to be a niche concept in Korea. But they definitely have a very dedicated fandom in Korea + international fans that show a lot of love to them. Their company has been supportive and releases a lot of new content on a regular basis, so I hope they continue making music for a long, long time!
The last time I visited Korea I don’t think I heard rock being played anywhere so yeah it’s definitely gonna be hard for them to find mainstream success...😞 That’s cool that they’ve got a loyal following and a company that supports them! That year 2017, not even Gfriend was nominated. If I’m not mistaken it’s either Twice or Blackpink won it. Once or blink can shit on me all day long, but let me say this, they won only because they are popular. If the amount of ppl knew Dreamcatcher or Gfriend is as much as ppl who knew Twice or Blackpink, the latter will never got those reward. Sad truth 😢
In 2017 GFriend was nominated at both MAMA and MMA, winning at MMA while losing to Twice at MAMA. For dancers who follow the awards I think most of us would agree that MAMA is a total popularity contest when it comes to dance and MMA along with SMA are more talent based, but still a popularity contest. With that being said ‘Signal’ (Twice’s winning choreo at MAMA) was an outstanding piece. Good enough to beat ‘Love Whisper’? Ehhh debatable... I honestly don’t have that big of an issue with GFriend losing because at least someone was able to see that they had some moves and put them up for a nomination while their competition that year was also impressive. What’s messed up for me is that Dreamcatcher didn’t even get nominated! This choreo was amazing and should’ve at the very least gotten them a nomination, but nominees also more often than not perform and they (award show runners) probably felt that Dreamcatcher’s music wouldn’t have been as well received at these big music award shows (broadcasted live across Asia). Which is lame, but from a business perspective it makes sense. Put what sells on stage which sadly isn’t Dreamcatcher... 😞 Money speaks loud so until their sales go up I don’t see them ever getting a nomination at the big shows😭

Dreamcatcher debuted in 2014 as Minx with only 5 members. Minx had your typical girl pop sound, and although the song was absolutely killer, the members themselves didn't really like the concept. If you want, you should check out Minx's Why Did You Come To My Home. The company announced that they would redebut with a new concept and 2 new members (Handong(her birthday today!) and Gahyeon) and in 2017 Chase Me came out. From there their nightmare series began with Good Night (one of my favorite choreos, dreamcatcher's intros are always killer, ESPECIALLY this one) following after and Fly High after that. Then it was You and I, What, and their latest comeback, Piri. They have also released 2 fan songs on their debut anniversary, Full Moon (probably my favorite choreo from them) and Over the Sky. They have yet to get their first win but they did get 2nd with Piri, so hopefully next comeback. The 5 original Minx members also participated in the YG survival show Mixnine, they withdrew in the middle to focus on their world tour. Even if korea sleeps on them, they have many international fans that can appreciate the rock sound. Excited to see more dreamcatcher and other reactions! Not a professional dancer or anything but i love dancing for fun so interesting to see the things you notice :)

Yeah, I think the rock genre is what holds them back in Korea. But it's also what got them popular internationally. They had South American and European tours before they had an Asia tour (which they're doing for the first time right now). I think in the long run, they are looking to at least get a bit more trendy. Maybe not drop the rock part entirely, but possibly make it less prominent, and I felt Piri was a step in that direction in terms of title track (They've had non-rock B-sides for awhile).

This was their debut song after they renamed and repackaged themselves. Watch MINX videos and you, like I was, totally stunned at the way they were trapped in the girl crush style. They were tigers ready to pounce.

rock will never blow up in korea, they like their cutesy stuff way too much. but I think dreamcatcher has gathered a nice international fan base who can appreciate their hard hitting music and choreo. I'm not a dancer so I don't really know, but wouldn't syncing for a fast choreo be harder than a slower pace choreo if the degree of difficulty(for each dance move) were the same?
There are different things at play that could mess up a groups sync when it comes to the slow/fast choreo. In theory if everyone has their moves memorized with the count and they're able to hit their mark the group will always look in sync. Arguments could be made for both in terms of which one is harder. For example, a slower piece of choreo will look off if some members don't apply the same level of textures/properly express their focus. So even though all dancers are hitting their mark, they still seem off because one dancer looks "better" or "worse" than the others. It's easier to notice these things too since the choreo is slower. So you could say it's harder to be in sync with the slower choreo because not only do all dancers have to hit their mark, they also have to apply the same level of textures and focus. You could say the faster choreo is harder because it honestly comes down to the individual dancers being in good enough shape to stay sharp with their movements throughout a potentially exhausting piece of choreo. I personally find it harder to look in sync with slower choreo. Textures/focus aren't used that much in faster choreo and if they are, often times it's difficult for viewers to pick up on so even if the members aren't in sync in that regard they can still look good so long as everyone hits their mark. I guess you could say there are levels to being in sync.

Yep, it's the rock bit... They are insanely talented, dancing, signing, stage presence, commitment to fandom. They are also total dorks, generous with their time, very hyper and lovable. But apparently Koreans don't like the rock sound... Also, their company doesn't carry much weight (only famous group is DalShabet), so it's difficult for them to get on the most popular shows like Weekly Idol, Knowing Bros, etc. However, because rock is more common, they have a lot of fan worldwide, they've been to all continents except Africa (who goes to Africa anyways?). They just came back from Australia and are going to Europe, again!
