Hi I loved the pacing of the narrative in the second half of Nostromo. Near the end, as he becomes obsessed with the hidden silver and the missing Decoud, along with the ingots, it all tumbles toward the fatality of Ns death by friendly fire. Gripping and somehow, perfectly satisfying. Ive enjoyed all the major novels of Conrad, but what was an unsuspected surprise and delight was his later work which is mostly overlooked. I mean the novels The Rover, The Arrow of Gold, The Rescue, and his last work, left unfinished, Suspense. I loved these books! the feeling of joy in the storytelling. About Conrad: throughout all his work i keep feeling the influence Nietzsche popping up in speculations and pronouncements on the nature of man and life. Thanks Jorge. Enjoying your videos and love of literature.
Hello, Daniel! 😃 Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Those final chapters of the novel are really something, yes. I need to read the novels you mention. Except for a couple of books, I have so far focused on "major" Conrad. I want to read his first one, for instance, to get a sense of the development of his style. The next one on my list in still Victory. What a wonderful connection you make with Nietzsche! I had not thought about it, but now that you mention it, definitely, that element is there in his worldview. (I think I touched upon the concept of the Übermensch in the video I did on Heart of Darkness, but I never pursued the matter.) I'm so happy to hear your enjoying the videos, my friend! Have a wonderful day, and happy reading!
I loved this presentation on one of my favorite novels of all time! N was my first success in trying to read one of the "Big Books" of English literature. N was also the first novel that helped me see in my mind the setting events took place in. I wonder if N was the right place to start reading Conrad, since this story seems to sum up all the concerns of Conrad's other fiction. Keep up this great channel!
Glad you enjoyed it, Donald! 😃 I'm so happy to hear this is one of your favorite novels. The construction of Latin America here is really quite impressive. In a way, I wish Nostromo had been my first novel by Conrad. I keep wondering how that would have affected my appreciation of his other works. Interestingly, the order in which I have been reading his works led to a slight disappointment with Lord Jim. It's a great novel, but I was expecting more. We'll see what happens with Victory. Have an amazing day, my friend, and happy reading!
Hola amigo! What a coincidence! Yesterday I started reading nostromo! I also bought under Western eyes(the incipit of this novel blew my mind away). What a wonderful surprise to see your video on nostromo this morning! Thanks for your amazing review. I hope you'll have a gorgeous day, my friend! I love your channel so much. Next step I think I'll read the secret agent and reread for the third time heart of darknees. By the way he masters perfectly the english language.
Omg!! 😲 It's the Conrad Connection! I'm sure you'll enjoy Nostromo. Now that I think about it, you may have finished it already. 😃 Both The Secret Agent and Heart of Darkness should be reread, absolutely. I highlighted this great description when I read The Secret Agent: "He led a cortege of dismal thoughts along dark streets, through lighted streets, in and out of two flash bars, as if in a half-hearted attempt to make a night of it, and finally back again to his menaced home, where he sat down fatigued behind the counter, and they crowded urgently round him, like a pack of hungry black hounds." Amazing. I think it is only in his first two novels, Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands, that you can sense his struggle with the language, but he really was a master of English prose. Thank you once again, Marinella, for the visits, the comments, and the support! Have a wonderful day, my friend, and happy reading!
@@JorgesCorner what an amazing quote! Tomorrow I'll finish reading nostromo and I'll started immediately the secret agent. I want to read every book that conrad wrote. Yesterday I bought the oxford reader companion to conrad. The book has the same cover as yours. Maybe it hasn’t been reprinted yet. Thanks once again for being my source of inspiration. Have a wonderful weekend, my friend.
Hope you're enjoying The Secret Agent, my friend! 😃 So many coincidences: I too decided at one point that I would read everything Conrad ever wrote, but then I took other paths and the project was left unfinished. I can continue with it little by little, at least. We'll see what Victory is like. I also have a copy of Almayer's Folly that needs to be read. So many books, haha... Have a fantastic day!
I'm really feeling the need to re-read this now, but there are so many other books by Conrad I'd like to get to first. Victory and Under Western Eyes are both contenders for the next one I'll plunge into. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this - I really enjoyed hearing what you had to say about it!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Aaron! 😃 Under Western Eyes is quite excellent. I still need to read Victory. Please let me know how your next Conrad experience goes. By the way, your channel looks amazing, my friend! I've just subscribed, and I can't wait to check out your videos. Have a fantastic day, and happy reading!
@@JorgesCorner Thank you, Jorge! I saw you put up a video about Borges' poetry. I'm looking forward to watching it, as he's one of my favourites. Happy reading!
