Foggy morning canopener truck crash at the 11foot8 bridge

- Maybe the driver was a bit foggy about the meaning of the 11' 8" clearance sign, or the significance of the "OVERHEIGHT - MUST TURN" flashing signal? I don't know, but he floored it and hit the bridge with his rental truck this morning.
Love the guy in the crosswalk who hears the crash, turns and looks, and then just continues on his journey. Another day, another can opener.
the guy in the crosswalk actually helped the truck reverse
Another day, another dumbass. Lol
And isn't that a felony? Leaving the scene of an accident?
@@crupert23225 they probably just moved out of the way
@@crupert23225 it’s probably such a frequent accident in the same spot, the cops have probably gotten sick of getting reports on it.
Props to the pedestrian at 0:59 signaling to the truck that it was OK to continue backing up. I'm here for the laughs but at the same time it's nice to see folks helping out too.
Agreed!
Yes, decent of them.
That driver had got to be shaken up, glad to see someone else helping.
Totally agree, these knuckleheads may have made a mistake but we’re all still humans; And we all still make mistakes.
Had that pedestrian been a few steps slower, he'd have been showered with debris.
Is it a pedestrian, or is it the driver of the car that backed out of frame on the bottom? Since it seemed like that car was backing up to make room for the truck
Perfect timing for the railroad inspector to be on the tracks as well. Very efficient crash.
I love how that guy's only reaction is to nonchalantly inspect the bridge. You can just see him on his notepad: "aaaand bridge is OK" *ticks box*...
Bridge 1 and truck 0.
@@CrArC He is probably very familiar with checking this bridge after crashes
The trucks never hit the bridge, just the iron barrier in front. Either way I'm sure the inspectors are sick of being sent to this bridge.
@@Zacht1980 That beam used to not be there. They added that because of the expensive repairs to the bridge.
I like how the pedestrian crossing at the lights doesn't even break stride when the truck crashes behind him. "Oh, another one of those again"
I noticed that also. He's like, just another day at the Penske Peeler. 😂
The next even stopped and hit the button for the light
i wasn't even laughing at this one until the guy pushed the cross walk button.
"Another stupid driver I see!"
He did a moving about-face and ten-hut.
Nothing raises my spirits like the sound of crunching metal when yet another Penske truck hits the 11-8 bridge.
"I love the sound of crunching metal in the morning. It sounds like..." Well, I don't actually know what abstract concept it sounds like, but I love it.
That penske rental lot must be full of these trucks waiting to get reapaired lol.
I've noticed that it's often Penske. Don't they warn their drivers to stay away from there?
That Penske rental place must just have a whole lot of crunched up trucks waiting to be repaired.
"foggy morning canopener" screams to be a country song.
“Hi Penske. You know that bridge you warned us about...”
PENSKE: Let me guess, you hit it, right?
Let me guess, the railroad employee just got done inspecting the bridge from the last crash that happened?
He was just about to get into his work truck and clock off for the day too!!
Drinking his coffee, finishing some paperwork, and getting ready to go home... Nope! Overtime, baby!
Fortunately what they hit is the steel beam mounted in front of the bridge that's a little shorter than the actual bridge. That way they don't have to keep rebuilding the bridge...
No, he's a track inspector or a signal maintainer, most likely.
standing right there he could’ve at least moved that crap out of the road
The bridge must be fed a steady diet of Penske
bdennis it’s allergic to u-hauls
Penske pasta
Ikr... always Penske, never Uhaul... Has a Uhaul truck ever crashed into it?
Not that I can recall, but there have been a few Enterprise trucks sacrificed
Nom nom nom Penske truck
It's like an old friend who you never get tired of seeing.
They really need a sign like the one McDonald's has for how many burgers they have sold but applied to how many trucks this beast has cut open. XD
No, just draw a pair of googly eyes and fangs on it, and a big word bubble that says "OM NOM NOM NOM". Maybe these drivers will understand then, if it looks like a cartoon.
@@asusmctablet9180
There's already a bridge like that, just sans the nom nom.
Over 20 billion cans open....
Now serving 20 billion and 1
I though a "Days since last idiot didn't check their clearance" sign might help.
Maybe some should stand under the bridge selling clean underwear!
Good place to open a coffee shop, the Crash Cafe, people could drink coffee and watch the fun!
Since it doesn't happen that often, you could have a special for when it does happen, like free coffee or something for anyone there
Crash special! HALF OFF!
Thomas Schreiber would be a good tourist destination
Dude thats a genius fucking idea invest into your own ideas man
They could offer a free coffee if you happen to be there during a crash. :D
Ahhh... These never get old
Dominic D ~ Why should the taxpayers pay for the actions of ignorant people? Plus, this bridge has been here over 100 years and the location is impossible. If you can’t read street signs, you shouldn’t be driving.
And pay millions for that? How about we just let these idiots destroy their trucks.
TurboFerret87 lmao. Where do these rental trucks come from. They going to have to order more trucks 🚚 lol
+Dominic D don't need to raise the bridge, just lower the pavement underneath it.
Oh indeedy, as long as that intersection doesn't change, there should be plenty of new content produced!
They should add a "too late" slogan to that sign.
too late...at the time when hiring a tall truck, just like Penske...
"told you so"
It should say told you so
@@julianmunoz522 That's what I was thinking! LOL!
No when the truck hits the bridge it triggers a sign saying "you idiot"
"YOU ARE OVERHEIGHT AND MUST TURN"
YOU DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!
I love the sound of Penske diesel accelerating towards its doom.
And the deafening silence immediately afterwards
Followed by the back-up & left turn of shame.
I also enjoy the sound of the diesel as it struggles to pull the truck back out again.
lmao YES The acceleration just makes it that much better.
Roger Penske could have had some of his cars in that truck.12.4 or 11.8,this will always be a problem when drivers don't Look properly at the sign.🔝👀
The pedestrians are the best! "Oh, yet again...."
Sharkie626 lol. The reaction is funny. I wish we could catch the drivers reaction
I love how they just causally go about their day
Woo! That'll wake ya up!
Yeah I'll just do a nice little pirouette here and admire someones regret and continue my mozy on to work...
He's also jaywalking (no crossing sign is red) so he probably wants to get to the other side before rubbernecking at the wreckage.
Every time I think that this channel is just going to fade away, I'm shocked by another person meeting the can opener.
The dread god Canopener demands a steady diet of Penske trucks and AC units.
You would think everyone in the area would know by now!
snorman1911 I know what you mean. But if that flashing sign doesn't stop them, tje canopener will.
As long as humans are still driving, and not our future robot overlords, then there will always be crashes and bridge strikes for us to enjoy.
Who ever welded that steel beam deserves a cold six pack for a job well done
I believe that beam was installed by the RR to protect their bridge, they don't mess around when it comes to protecting their assets, as seen by the RR person coming over to check on it right away.
As many times as that thing gets hit they need more than that😎👍
I'm wondering if they are monitoring the damage being done and seeing if they have to replace or repair them
Solid as a rock
The railroad worker in the reflective vest should have moved the truck pieces out of the roadway and onto the sidewalk, out of the way of cars.
How about a giant gigawatt laser that slices the top of the vehicle off before it hits the bridge?
The vehicles never hit the _bridge_. That's the reason that steel beam is there. The beam protects the bridge by taking the impact. Good thing too, because that bridge wouldn't be too safe for crossing anymore.
jdstep97 You missed the joke
Jdstep97 thank you captain obvious
You can build a pretty dam high bridge for that kind of cost - but it would take away the fun.
Would only be an improvement if it also immediately vaporised the shorn bits into air.
There's so much yello paint on the bar that protects the bridge from being hit, that Penske should put their logo on it.
New sponsor
They should make you agree not to be within 5 miles of that bridge when you rent a truck.
That’s at least the third Penske truck that I have seen do that, do they have shares ??
Steve Hurrell I think it’s a rental company. Specifically one that points out the bridge to everyone who rents a truck locally and reminds them that peeling the top isn’t covered by the insurance…
Now that will be one hell of a expensive repair job!!
I like the pedestrian that stops to push the cross walk button then points at the sign to the driver... pure gold.
I wonder how many commuters regularly travel under this bridge, and when they find themselves behind a rental truck, they call ahead to work to say they may be late because they're behind a truck at the bridge. The work already knows what they mean.
Another Penske peel!! Awesome. The fact the big bright sign is flashing in their face and they still don't get it makes me smile😁
jason dumoulin Penske will rent to almost anyone with the cash. No experience necessary driving a box truck or how to drive one safely. That's what insurance is for.
LS Fer sure bud... Just like Uhaul. A regular drivers license gives you the right to drive a 26-foot fully loaded box truck. No wonder they're all beat to shit as well.
Just need a face camera lol
After the collision the sign should flash "NICE GOING, DUMBASS"
Ah! Good one! _"I wonder what that flashing sign OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN means?"_
Now u know the rest of the story! Borrowing a line from Paul Harvey radio show.
Many signs are permanently flashing. That makes it completly meaningless, Nobody realizes this is personalized. There are no traffic lights in the world, that turn red, cause of it's me, who's coming. It's a complety new concept here. And on car rental trucks, you mainly have just "car drivers", they don't even know their height. The rent a truck. I know nobody checking the details of the rented truck for the clearance.
English wise it's actually not STATING what you are: STOP NOW, YOU IDIOT RENTAL TRUCK might work
Word is they’re renaming this bridge the “Penske Railroad Bridge”.
"Foggy Mountain Canopener" ... that should be a bluegrass tune.

Plot twist: it’s the same guy in all of these Penske trucks, he finally got out of timeout and got another rental. He does this just to fuck with us.
He's cashing in on all these injuries he gets at work
Its the cousin of the guy who has the cameras.
I damn near shit myself laughing at your comment. Thank you very much! :))

Haha, love the “That’ll wake you up” comment by someone
2:02 nice catch!
11 years since this started and that yellow bar on the bridge is still as indestructible as ever.
These rental trucks are almost always empty. I'd like to see a full truck hit the bridge to compare the differences in the wheelie, impact, etc. For science!

I would LOVE to see a manure hauling truck hit this bridge!
Take a vacation there and do some experimenting. We’ll be watching and cheering you on. 😂
When they are full they are more likely to fit under...
velvetsqueeze For science! I rotated my owl for that in time gone by.
Penske must have a hell of a repair bill with all of their trucks getting wrecked at the bridge. LOL!
Greg MacShane
This is a "payday" for penske because their contact/ insurance does not cover overhead cashes, so the customer has to pay for damage and maybe lost rental wages during repair out of pocket. So I'm sure penske is getting the last laugh.
TheRichFather lost of use fee can be a very interesting charge lol
Penske and the bodyshop are both making a nice profit from this bridge, it's the companies that are borrowing these trucks I feel for
TheRichFather Penske, Ryder and Enterprise. ;)
Days since last Penske accident: Back to 0.
LOLOL!!! You have just won the Internet.
Like those signs you sometimes see outside of factory's, So many days with out an accident.
Maybe that's what the blank-out sign should say instead. I'd bet you more people would pay attention to it; whether or not it would actually reduce the rate of crashes is anybody's guess. Then again, I'm not sure I want that rate reduced.
Part of me wants to fly over to the USA just to rent a truck to crash into that bridge.

Hope you get the zero deductible option on the insurance policy when you rent the truck. If not, it could be the most expensive amusement of a lifetime. 😉

This time there was a railroad worker right on the scene. How convenient he called in the accident himself
Looks like his Hi-Rail truck is flashing a light in the 2nd angle.
Worker on site: "Hey boss, these dumbasses still keep hitting the guard even with all the lights and signs"
Boss: "Can't fix stupid"
I like how he just stands there as the cars try and drive around the debris in the road, lol. Can't be bothered to walk 3 feet to pick it up, I guess.
Jesus Christ. Nobody is expecting him to pave the road and fix the sewer. It's a piece of fucking debris blocking traffic 3 feet in front of him. 5 seconds of his time picking it up is what any good citizen SHOULD do.
Dude it wasn't rage, it's annoyance.
Pick up debris in the road so that cars can go by. Simple. Shouldn't even require thought. Takes 5 seconds, if that. Being a rail road worker does not stop you from being a decent citizen.
I would say the same thing if someone was laying there asking for help. He's not a paramedic....is he supposed to just ignore that person too?
It's annoyance that I even have to explain this shit for more than 2 comments, lol. Come on now. Nobody is asking him to clean the streets of Haiti here. It's a piece of debris in the road, and people can't go by it. Walk 3 feet, pick it up, and put it on the sidewalk.
Simple.

If you crashed your truck into a bridge, you'd probably be more careful after that. I'm pretty sure it's a different driver every time, and it's doubtful that any of them have hit a bridge before.
I love that moving companies warn drivers the insurance doesn’t cover this bridge.
A nice can-opening collision followed by the left turn of shame.
Can't beat that for foggy day entertainment.
That noise of the metal beam letting go of its victim is music too my ears!

This was the best birthday present. Thank you Penske driver!
Maybe an additional sign.. "IF ITS YELLOW AND SAYS PENSKE, YOU WON'T FIT"
Also in reference to the video posted for the wreck AFTER this.. "If you have A/C units on your roof, You apparently don't need them if you keep going"
Ryder and Enterprise are also frequent victims of the crash bar.
Good ole weight reduction. Trying to up their MPG.
I like how the car on the right figured he'd waited long enough and goes through a full red.
1:29 Prius driver ("The rules don't apply to me because I'm better than you!")
The city just hired a guy who hides behind the bushes 24/7 to keep tabs on the trucks that crash into this bridge.
All the truck rental companies in the area need to have all drivers sign a sheet warning them about this bridge. since most trucks that hit it are rentals.
They dont care as if it is like Australia the overhead damage you cause is not covered by insurance the person that hires truck has to pay for it out of their own pocket. Plus in some contracts it also makes the person hiring responsible for lost rental on truck as it is in being repaired so a cheap 1 day hire can end up being a huge bill
Yup thats how it works here too. They put big stickers on the dash stating so as well "YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OVERHEAD DAMAGES" lol
Yeah here in the states any overhead damage is your responsibly. And damage like in the video. Could easily cost several thousand dollars, and thats just for the repairs on the cargo area.
Michael Gray truck company makes a fast buck. Customer pays for the cost of repair and the lost of use.
Also the customer will need to rent out another truck while the one they trashed is being fixed and the customer is paying for that too :D
The guy at the bottom at 0:33 just think "Just another day in Durham"
He just get tired of seeing those lmao
Same guy helped driver to reverse ;D at 1min
Pedestrian walks by turns around “oh just another crash another day” turns back around causally walks away...
pretty sure he was the guy seen telling the driver he can back up, then went back on his merry way
The guy walking is the best. " Better push the button so I can cross the street. Just another day "
Is there a billboard advertising truck box repairs nearby? There’s gotta be a specialty shop nearby 😂
That truck is for parts now. Too expensive to fix the box. Unless Penske has a broken down truck with a good box. Even the rear sides were bent on the box.
The driver will pay for the replacement of the box out of pocket since the renter insurance doesn't cover the roof of the box.
I would think so! If these knot headed box drivers keep on feedin the can opener. It'll continue! That will be one very big repair to tackle!
Guess there will be more crash art for sale in the near future.
The one improvement I could suggest is a camera on the other side of the bridge so we could see the driver's reaction.
Paul Hudson I agree. that would be amazingly awesome.
Though it might be legally complicated to show their faces, if they don't want to. But if it's possible it would be awesome.
It could be part of the towing agreement. "We'll pull you out, IF you sign a waiver that lets us show your face on TH-cam".
Oh yeah!! Maybe NCDOT and the local CBS affiliate in Raleigh-Durham (WCNC 17) can arrange that.
Bridge continues to feed off of Penske trucks. Almost feel sorry for them having so many of their box trucks destroyed because of people not checking the height of the trucks to begin with.
I want to have a peek at a Penske rental contract.
Astroflight it would be just the same as from every rental place - you have insurance but damage from overhead strikes is specifically not covered and the renter has to pay for 100% of the repair cost.
I wonder if they verbally warn each renter about the bridge and that they WILL hit it if going that way.
Or following Google maps, my nephew would drive of a cliff when he has his nose down following the maps.
I went to their website. *There's no way to find out the truck clearance heights on the Penske website.* They'll tell you the internal storage capacity, but not what @#$%ing bridges it'll get stuck under. It's like they actually WANT such accidents to occur, because they sure avoid giving potential customers the information they'd need to avoid them.
Supposedly the contract you sign tells you that you're responsible for any overheight collisions, but having seen how assiduously the website avoids telling you this information, I suspect the contract is also suspiciously void of what the height limit is for the particular vehicle you're renting.
This bridge reminds me of Shelob, the giant spider from the LOTR's. "She's always hungry. She always needs to feed."
If it takes 30 Seconds of warnings for the point to still not get across, you deserve it!
I truly believe this channel helped to raise this monster bridge, these crashes used to be brutal and often!
Every time somebody crashes into the bridge, all rail activity is halted while rail company sends people to inspect the bridge. That will mess up your morning commute good. This time there were railworkers nearby!
February I’m sure Penske is liable for that bill, yikes.
I'd volunteer to sit there day-to-day just to watch it go down.
February that’s probably why the railroad installed that crash beam in front of the bridge. Reduces the chance of damage to the bridge.
If a crash is severe enough, a truck can go past the beam and clip the bridge. So the rail company has to come inspect it every time.
Mist likely the driver of the rental truck pays all the bills. There's a line item in the rental contract that assigns all risk to the renter.
Thanks for my fix of 11'8". I had a bad day today and this helps.
Nothing better than a good wheelie.
1moreastronaut i wonder how that feels in the driver seat. If he had any hot coffee it would of went up in the air
Yeah, this guy was confident on the gas ... he keep going, no expense.
+cool2180 Cooked eggs. xD
I love how he slowly backs up and drives off in shame.
I always hit like before I watch it - cause I know it's going to be good...
I like how that guy just kept walking like nothing happened even as shit was flying towards him.
he probably see that shit more than he see his neighbors.
I notice that the majority of the trucks are rental trucks. Are there rental places on that road that rent out these trucks. And if so, one thing that they should make a priority is to tell the renters not to go that way, or to tell them about that bridge. Because obviously they don't have enough sence to realize they can't make it under...or don't have enough knowledge of the truck they are driving.
The rental companies can be anywhere in the area even out of state but in reality 1,000s of rental trucks probably drive by here every day only a hand full a year get hair cut.
Maybe the ones that don't hit the bridge are rented locally and are told about this bridge. But they can only go so far. There are probably quite a few of these low clearance areas that also get hit. They just don't have cameras on them 24/7 and a youtube channel.
Its just better to follow all the signs that in and outside the truck giving you the clearance.
I've also seen decals on the sides in reverse that you when you look in your side view mirrors. I make decals for a bus charter company and have made just these decals.
why would the rental company care? you broke it, you pay for it.
i think penske only does leases. i dont think they do one day rentals.
@@MrYfrank14 I've done one day rentals on Penske before...they tend to be better trucks than Ryder, etc. I also know enough to learn the height of my vehicle though.

I GIVE IT AN 8 OUT OF 10.
Relating to the comments about lowering the roadway, besides the underground utilities, the cost would be borne by the city. N/S St Gregson St is a local roadway. However, it certainly can be done. It's a question of money and who has it and the possibility of who wants to sacrifice their property (no one does unless they can make a lot of money from it).
AZ lowered Grand Ave at Glendale Ave through Glendale AZ by about 30 feet. This reduced traffic congestion when a train came through the 6-point intersection. It is now a 4-point intersection.
It's part of a federally funded business route, so the highway portion could be done with a big chunk paid by Washington, and the rail line portion by USDoT infrastructure improvement money.
