Had me smiling from start to finish, amazing, he controlled his guitar like it was one of his limbs. I hope new generations of people keep stumbling onto this long into the future.
Gen Z here, literally feel like an 80 year old in a teenagers body lol😂 I can’t stand new music but anything from the 50s - 80s is music to my ears (no pun intended) Gordon Lightfoot is my favorite singer songwriter with Johnny cash being second. Chet Atkins for sure is one of if not the best guitar player along side Roy Clark or Jerry Reed!
@PiedmontProductionsOfficial great to hear from a Gen Z. I'm a Millennial. Born in 1924 Chet was the Greatest/G.I. Generation. Maybe one day a Gen Alpha will reply to this and show that Chet is still getting some air time?🤞
It's not just what he plays, but the way he plays it. So much ease, so much class. You could've woken this man in the middle of the night and put a guitar in his hands and he would still be able to play this perfectly.
It's funny you say that. Apparently he had rather bad asthma as a child so he would have to sit upright at night to sleep proper. Apparently would play the guitar until he passed out.
Yessiree ! I grew up listening to All His Stuff. Still here it, but it's been stolen, mashed, trashed and fucked around with by everything that it's not the same now No one seems to be able to Even come close to These Entertainers from this Era❤💯🌈☮️🇨🇦🦫💜🕊️
Chet had such amazing dexterity and control of both hands. It looks easy when he does it, but for you non-guitar players watching, it's very difficult.
Just FYI, there, the song ("Yakety Sax") was written and first recorded in 1963 and Chet recorded his version in 1965. Benny didn't start using it until about five years after that.
One might add another song to the list: Yakety Yak by the Coasters (1958) which heavily influenced Boots Randolph. Yakety Sax is not a complete rip off, but there are huge melodical similarities! The title is one, though 😁
I saw Mr. Atkins play that son live (without the lyrics) at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in Seattle, November of 1985. He was onstage with A Prairie Home Companion's Garrison Keillor, and our local Norwegian legend, Stan Boreson. (If you've never had the pleasure, look him up - he's a comic genius).

Knowing that guys like Mark knopfler and j j cale are his biggest fans is enough to me . Chet Atkins is an all Time great for sure . ) ( my english is pretty bad , sorry about that .
I met Chet Atkins backstage Grand ole Opry .... Rufus Thiboceaux and Floy Cramer ate my lunch when I was out one day at noon ... and I was on the Ralph emery show several times around 1969. Had it all, but gave in to drugs. So you know the rest of the story. I am a Christian now, so it was worth giving it up. Many more stories when I lived on Henderson lake next door to Merle Travis and ran with his stepson Mike ..... Mr. Atkins was the best I've ever heard. oh my last name is New***
wow...just wow. my uncle Bert Coughlin was lucky enough to play with Chet back in the day. I still have the photo of the two of them together. So cool! Chet is the King.
My father always felt Mr.Atkins was the best guitarist he ever heard. He had several albums dating back decades. He also had great respect for Mark Knopfler as well after seeing him playing with Chet.
This song is probably one of the hardest songs I’ve tried to learn on guitar, with a pick. And he plays it effortlessly with a thumpick and nails, absolutely insane.
So do I. I thank my late father who was a fan of chet & had some of his albums in his collection. I soon inherited his music collection many years later and still listen to chet's smooth guitar picking even in 2021. The master of the electric & acoustic guitar 4ever!
Chet started playing professionally in the 40s. He has influenced MANY guitar players through the years. Check out Tommy Emmanuel, Steve Wariner, Jerry Reed, and the other guitar player in the video, Chet's right hand man, Paul Yandell. Those are just 4 of the greats. Go check out Chet playing Stars and Stripes Forever. You'll see the influence.
OM-GOSH! He plays this song -- I've been working on, struggling with and playing in an amateur style for years -- as if he were SLEEPWALKING! God Bless Him! And thanks for posting. Super! KEN C. I'll try to emulate that style!!
On this day in 1970 {April 29th} Chet Atkins performed a medley of "Wildwood Flower", "Mr. Sandman", and "Freight Train" on the ABC-TV musical variety program 'The Johnny Cash Show'... He released all three as singles, but none of them charted... Between 1954 and 1980 he had nine records on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart; his biggest hit was "Yakety Axe", it peaked at #4 in 1965...
This is the first time in years I've heard this, it's brilliant. He was one of the greatest guitarists ever. I think he definitely lived up to the words regarding spreading a little happiness around with that
My dad played this style to a tee. I cried when I heard this because my dad passed 9 years ago and I'd never heard anybody play the same style my dad played.
Got to see him in Chastain Park Amphitheatre a long time ago,a long with Floyd Cramer ,Pete Fontaine and a whole lot more.Since I play a sax,my hero was there too,Boots Randolf. What a concert.I was maybe twelve.
America doesn't breed men like him anymore, mad talented guitarist, a finger picker that very few can rival of an art that's dying out. His skill with harmonics is breath taking to say nothing of his general magic with an axe. RIP Chet.

amazing! And now my Chet Akins youtube video journey begins.
How's that journey going? Chet was an amazing artist!
You will be done tomorrow morning at seven, and your last video will be '1h mom with her kittens'
Try Roy Clark too ! :)
Anyone who likes Chet would love Tommy Emmanuel.
Next windy and warm
Every guitarist alive today stands on the shoulders of this legend.
More like worshipping at his feet.
Holy smokes, I DIDN'T KNOW THIS SONG HAS LYRICS! Absolutely fantastic!
I think Merle Travis wrote the lyrics to it much later.
Okay, it's a quality guitar but who else made it sing like that? What a genius. Cheers from New Zealand.
The riff he lays on at 1:20, with those high accents is classic!!
Now I know "Yakety Axe" has words!!
Throughout the song, including that riff, are musical allusions to other standards.
Atkins is really one of the best guitarists ever !
Not one of: He was the best
@@bobbeck5866 Not the best: one of the best
Amazing guitarist...
He once said that Tommy Emmanuel was the greatest acoustic guitarist of all time - a hell of a compliment!
Chet had such amazing dexterity and control of both hands. It looks easy when he does it, but for you non-guitar players watching, it's very difficult.
He made playing a guitar look effortless. He was one of the best guitar players to ever live. They don't make them like this no more. Music Legends.
Yes they do : Kurt Vile
He doesn't pull a weird face
Yes sir you are exactly right Chet Atkins played the guitar perfectly and effortlessly.. And no they don't make guitar players like this anymore.
Chet just crushed that old tune! He was a tremendous guitar player and a great record producer, but he was also a true southern gentleman.
Just FYI, there, the song ("Yakety Sax") was written and first recorded in 1963 and Chet recorded his version in 1965. Benny didn't start using it until about five years after that.
This is called the Benny Hill song.

Chet and Mark Knoffler making records. Those were the days.

The way his wrist is practically locked at the top of the bridge! PF magic it is. Damn that man can play.

Ol' Chet is probably the greatest guitar player of all time.
@jhon kremer Nope...that goes to Led Ka'apana, of Hawaii (whose fans are "Led Heads," by the way... !)
Don't get me wrong, Chet is fantastic. Very few are on his level. But Roy Clark could play this song on a tennis rack just as good.😊

One of the greats for sure. Influenced by Django and Merle. Definitely an innovator. The great guitarist Eric Johnson loves his playing and I do too!
