How sweet of you to wait so patiently...! When I was a kid I was the one who daily prepared the water for the hummingbirds in our garden. After doing so I would stay a few minutes there, whistling to catch their attention and talking to them while they fed. They eventually grew very used to having humans around them. They would hover by while I was carrying the feeder back and sometimes perch on my arms and shoulder. Such precious little fairies.
FYI to all the Hummingbird lovers who put water out for the bird....if the temperature gets over 86 degrees Fahrenheit, it is recommended you change the water. So here in California, I change the water almost everyday. I only have about 3 birds that come to my feeder, so I don't fill it up. Just about a 1/3 of the way. The birds can get sick from dirty water. Not writing this to be rude, just so you know. 😄
I don't boil my water/sugar solution. I use filtered water from the fridge, add the sugar and stir it on a low heat on the stove. When the water is clear, I turn it off. The water is barely warm. Then I put it in the fridge. I change the nectar every three days, or sooner if it looks at all cloudy. The hummingbirds LOVE it when I clean the feeder and fill it with nice cold nectar. I guess it cools them down on a hot day. Kind of like sweet tea does for me. I'm a few years late, but loved the video. Enjoy!!
Some black mould spots floating at the top of the sugar water that is very cloudy. Time to change it. Mould is not healthy for the hummers. Suggestion. Only make one cup at a time with same water /sugar ratio. It’s not necessary to boil it. Use your kettle to boil a bit of water. Add a 1/4 cup to the sugar and stir till all sugar has dissolved and mixture is clear. Only takes a minute of stirring. Then top up to one cup with cold water. Then it’s ready to pour in your cleaned feeder without any cooling period necessary.
So glad you mentioned this. I'm dedicated to cleaning/refilling our feeders, typically every other day. Now that's it's consistently over 90° F, I clean them and refill them EVERY DAY. I enjoyed this video, but noticed the floating black muck right away. Y'all don't anybody put RED FOOD COLORING in the sugar water ("nectar"), either. They don't need it and it isn't good for them.
The nectar looks pretty cloudy and some bugs are floating in it. I know you don't want to hurt hummingbirds so please change the solution more frequently. It's easy to give the feeder a quick clean with a little vinegar and scrub once in a while too. Hummingbirds are such wonderful things.
Yes that is correct but they eat the sugar mix as a fuel so they can get the insects. It's important to change the water every 3 or 4 days. It can make them sick if you don't change it regularly!
I sterilize the bird feeder with boiling water, do not use soap of any kind, let hot water sit for 20 minutes , then pour out, then I add the nectar, then I add cooled boiled water to nectar. Nothing should be floating around inside the feeder, and the little yellow centres, should also be cleaned regularly. The little birds are very thankful, I’m sure.☺️
Thank you for the video! I have a female who comes to my feeder very often every day and last summer she began checking me out more & more...getting closer & closer. She likes to put her beak in my hair (on the back of my head) for some reason lol. Then yesterday morning she got super close to my face & just hovered & squeaked for a long time (for a hummingbird anyway). SO amazing! I really hope to be able to hold her one day.😊
+cookingfordads will do! Here is my email address: mrs.b.snow@gmail.com I have some really amazing UP CLOSE pics of my female hummingbird and my two male hummingbirds if you'd like to see them!😊
Olive Dog Male and female hummingbirds can be identified simply based on the color of their feathers. Male hummingbirds have bright feathers to attract females and to deter males by expressing their dominance. A patch of brightly-colored feathers on the necks of males is known as a gorget. A gorget's color range includes red, purple, orange, blue and pink. When hit with sunlight, the gorget will glisten due to refraction, or the bending of sunlight against the different-sized feathers. Males can make the gorget appear to be black to avoid attracting predators. Unlike males, female hummingbirds have no bright feathers to display. Females are often brown or dull green in color. Immature male hummingbirds typically resemble females in that they have no bright feathers.
I was in Costa Rica once, and there was such an Hummingbird feeder. There were many many hummingbirds and they actually came close to me and sit on my finger. Greetings from Germany:)
Amazing, I have 3 feeders close to each other, but my friend chose the smallest and hovers above my head. Have not tried having it sit on my finger. That was awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Hi, love the video!! However, your nectar should never be cloudy. If it’s been over 90 degrees every day, you need to change your nectar every day. We gotta take care of these little guys. 😊
That’s awesome going to try this with the hummingbirds we have. One day a female came right up to my face as if she wanted me to put my hand out and let her sit on it. Yep going to try this lol
I betcha you were thinking OMG! OMG! OMG! l love my hummers! If you want more, hang a milk jug with a cut out and put in banana peels & create a fruit fly farm - those hummers love those little bugs!
Thats awesome! I live in michigan and i am going to get a humming bird feeder today!! Having a hummingbird land on u would be so cool!! Any tips for having a feeder??
that! is awesome! and im sure there's going to be a discussion on the gender of the bird. aside from that its amazing how fast their wings beat and you can tell from the video capture that the video camera cant keep up.
Your solution looks cloudy and moldy . That will give them a bacterial infection and kill them. Need to clean and provide clean good every 2 days, even if it means dumping it out . Love that they sit there!
Very nice but there are tons of hummingbirds suffering from fungal infection of their tongues due to humans feeding from unhygienic feeders and using red artificial color. Please make sure that your syrup is fresh and feeder thoroughly cleaned. I know that you love hummingbirds, do it for them.
Do they come to the feeder. It takes a couple days before they discover the feeder. Once they're there, give them a couple days and then start to hang out by the feeder, moving closer each day. Let me know how it goes.
Im sorry but that water looks horrible. They need to be changed at lease every 3-4 days (maybe even more). This one looks like its been there for weeks. It even appears to have a dead fly floating in it!

Hummingbirds eat insects/bugs regularly. It's their main source of protein.

Yup, especially during periods of hot weather.
Urban Hum Gardener our hummingbirds suck it all up and we never need to worry about cloudy solution cause they have a big appetite for it I guess😂😂😂

Hats off to you, for your patience
It actually doesn't take very long. They're really not afraid of us.
Cute idea, but you need to change your sugar water! It is cloudy, moldy, and has bugs floating in it!
Music came in and scared a turd right out of my ass into my boxers. Thanks so much

Hummers get so close to me. I believe that hummers see me as soooo slow moving that I'm not a threat.
Exactly, they are in control. :-)
how did that feel? I bet amazing. Mine fly up to my wheelchair and the males attack the females, only when they get to close to the feeder
Precious!

Hard to do here in the winter :-)
My sister put this thing on my phone that's why it said funny finger

Id rather your bird sat on my finger 😂
Jeez, they are small
The smallest is called the Bee Hummingbird and you can guess why.
I'd love to have the chance to see one in person.
We don´t have them i Europe. As I understand only live in the americas. Such a beautiful little bird.
It needs to be changed
That feeder is filthy , old syrup...think of the birds health, clean it weekly at least. You could be spreading mites to all the hummingbirds too.
