Surprisingly enough it's not the barrel of this stage that always got me, but the length of the entire stage itself. So many times I've run out of time at the boss.
This level had one of the most memorable, frustrating, and time-wasting bosses in Sonic history. But even after beating that boss, you still had to face Robotnik a few minutes afterward.
I think he means the Act 1 boss, the spinny top which breaks the floor slowly. That was the most frustrating thing I ever came across in Sonic tbh. Then there was a phase where I thought it was easy. But I'm not looking forward to that part in Sonic Origins 😁
When i was playing carnival night i got stuck in one single barrel for like an hour because i didnt know how to make the barrels go up and down so i searched a tutorial.
***** Actually, that's not entirely correct. Launch Base Zone is the only one to have share a music file. Ice Cap and Carnival Night do not. You're right that Carnival Night removes instruments, but parts of the song is re-arrange. Same with Ice Cap (and act 2 in Ice Cap is longer than Act 1, also Act 2 adds one or two more channels). Only Launch Base uses Act 1's file, but removes some instruments from here and there.
I almost killed my friend when he finally told me you could move the barrel up and down with the directions. I got past that part by jumping... let me tell you that was rage enducing.

@@Nyah420 To be perfectly honest, it took me a half hour to figure that out lol. The solution to this obstacle is just jarring. The way you’re supposed to interact with it feels so out of place for a Sonic game. You would think you are supposed to jump on it or spin dash on to it or something…

That freakin barrel tho....I had to call a video game hotline for help. I spent hours on that impossible sh*t only to find out how freakin simple it was to pass lol
At first I thought it was a glitch in the level design and I gave up, then returned to it after awhile and figured it out. Nowadays with internet knowledge being so readily available, I don't feel like challenges like this are as big a deal. Anyone would just Google it and find the answer instantly.

I read a lot of complaints about the act 2 in a lot of later Sonic 3 zones being just the first zone's track with one less instrument, but it really works in all of the zones that they do this in. Like here, for instance, it really captures the feeling of "staying too late at the carnival." And then, of course, in Ice Cap zone you enter the icy expanse of the glacial surface, all alone in the cold. Finally, Launch Base Zone acts as a false final zone, so the Act 2 track being calmer reinforces the feeling of the first half of the game winding down, and hints that something is amiss.
My bluetooth headphones desynced during this. I think having the left channel be a full second ahead of the right channel sums up what playing this level feels like

It only costed me a life. I was playing it with a friend (they were Tails). After failing the jumping for about 4 more minutes, I started experimenting with the controls. I felt like a total idiot though. You don't have to believe me, but I'm being truthful.
When me and my siblings were younger we always thought it sounded like Michael Jackson, especially that breakdown at 1:03. (Sounded like a part in “Jam”).

I was today years old, after playing the game since it came out, when it dawned on me that they most likely made this version of the song watered down from act one to match the flooded with water act.

I just dug out my manual for Sonic 3 (yes, I still have my original Mega Drive and games), and it doesn't say anything about Carnival Night zone. It does warn you about Icecap Zone, though.
What you do is: The second you jump on the barrel, slightly jump off it while it's down and transform. The seconds it takes for Sonic to change, the barrel goes back up without you.
That stupid barrel was the bane of my existence when I was younger! After I lost Sonic 3 for my Sega Genesis, I never passed that stupid barrel until I bought Mega Collection for PS2 years later when I finally passed it, I FELT SO DUMB LOL!

Also, if tails falls of the barrel, he will look up, down and then jump, the issue is that on the barrel, you can't tell.
