Big Rigs was a client of mine in 1981. He told me that some REME fellow working on an Antar accidentally put it in gear- a very low recovery out of sand type gear. Went away for a while thinking it was in neutral- came back later and it had crept forward slowly demolishing the workshop it was in !I imagine that was a bit of a bind- explaining that one- "It was in neutral, honest. The Big Bad Wolf must have blown the building down!"

There used to be a Anter Wreck truck in Rayliegh Essex back in 82/83-was owned by Big Rigs a CB radio company, was used now and again for towing but sadly in 1990 it ended up in a Breakers Kirbys in Rochford

Does the one in front have the diesel engine, or is it just a worn Meteorite?

I would love to know the army reg of the front one. I bet I worked on it at bulford camp in the early 80s.

After selling my Scammell Explorer I FOUND an Antar in South Wales in a poor state but running. I almost bought it but was told they were 'too wide' to be allowed on roads now without a Police escort? I only ever see them being trailered to rallies now. So whats the truth behind this, as they were used on the roads for tank hauling so how can they be 'too wide'??

An Antar is 2.82m wide the Construction and Use regs set the limit at 2.75. You could plate it for STGO but that would mean you'd have to be hauling a qualifying load with it.
When they were in service they were exempt from C&U regulation.
