I personally feel that Highschool DxD's biggest strength is that the Fanservice, although it's ALWAYS there and in high abundance, it never allows it's own fanservice to distract from the story or the main point of a scene. The fanservice is integrated into the plot without interrupting it, and that's actually a very rare skill for an ecchi anime that I completely appreciate. I typically don't like fanservice anime, but I do like DxD. I believe that's the reason.
To me the girls also come across as a lot more confident. In a lot of bad ecchi series they come across as more so weak and desperate which kind of makes me feel bad for finding them sexy. In Highschool DxD the girls often are very confident and actually knowingly push their sexuality onto others. So it's more so him accepting their gifts rather than taking advantage of those girls.
The reason for that is that in the source material, the novel, the ecchie is pretty minimal compared to the anime, only about 5% of the text of a volume is usually about ecchie and fanservice, 80% is usually just shounen shenanigans and 15% is dedicated to either plot development, world building or character development. In the anime the amount of ecchie has been greatly exaggerated, but it still has a storyline in the source material to follow so it may be the result from that.
I watched it first for the boobs, but as the 1st season came to an end, the story about Sacred Gears, The Dragons, and other stuff made me want to continue. Sadly, I can't say the same for my friends
If you can find translations of the light novels, the series gets REALLY into that. So much more goes on with the power aspects of dragons and sacred gears and there's some stuff that the 3rd and 4th season left out that make it even more interesting. But moving into the content that would be the 5th season and beyond, shit goes insane, with them really giving context to the dragons and a greater look into humanity's role within the three great factions. They even bring in other things that were basically disregarded early on, like the fucking vampires (which early on, the author was like "Gasper's a vampire. It sucked for him. He slowly gets over it. Moving on.")
As a female I really enjoyed this show it was my second anime and no lie some parts made me blush like a school girl I believe it made me comfortable to go look for more (anime)

I really like Highschool DxD because it's way more than just fanservice, and has a protagonist who isn't ashamed of being a pervert but even though being a pervert, still treats woman with respect instead of seeing them as mere objects for his fetishes unlike many other perverts depicted in anime. For me this is also a part what makes Isei such a likable character, open and honest about who he is and what he desires but never crosses the moral line.

Even the fight sequences are hilarious. Remember when Issei got a sudden burst of power when Rias promised him he could touch her boobs? In the context of this big climactic battle, I was pissing my pants at the perfect comedic timing.
The difference between DxD and normal ecchi shows is that it bothers to have a plot. However the entirety of the plot is based around how pervy the main character is. Truly a masterpiece. It's literally the first time I heard anyone saying anything good about High School DxD. Everything I know about the universe we live in is being put into question.
It's really a trash harem ecchi anime with a mediocre plot. Not bad plot, just mediocre plot. It's this story about the main character being the chosen one, there are demons and a Demon Lord and angels and shit and that's it.
There are really trash books out there as well, so I don't believe it. Monogatari is a really good series (boring if you will) and it also comes from a light novel. Oregairu is about the same. There is a lot of anime that comes from light novels that is absolute trash because the novel is absolute trash.
Nothing said by this video raised any objections with me. Also, there is something ridiculously entertaining about the people behind these shows trying to put fanservice in at every possible corner. It's like how I can enjoy mediocre action movies for their over the top action as long as the choreography is novel. There are plenty of shows that force the fanservice to an unbelievable degree. But with DXD they atleast try to make it funny.
Moshiur Rahman It's a downgraded version of all of DxD. If DxD was an 8/10 then that was 4/10. I mean, if you are craving for something similar to Highschool DxD then that's your best option, because its literally a duplicate with different characters, but otherwise? Meh.
I generally hate ecchi anime and fanservice but I was bored and in a weird mood one day and this one actually turned out fun. I think you hit the nail on the head that it bypasses the creep factor that most of them have, and the mythos is actually pretty damn well done.
Kara R you seem to have some hangups. I hate to find myself in a comments section defending high school DxD, but it’s extremely obvious that the main character wouldn’t do that, considering how aggressively he holds himself back from taking advantage of Asia.
The greatest fight in terms of set up and desperation happened at the end of season one with the solo duel against Phenex for me. The only issue I had was the overly long length of Issei’s crediting of his skills to his comrades. I feel like they could have kept them short and simply say “I learned THIS from-“ and specify which character. They already got the chess motif and anime’s a visual medium. For example he could have yelled “I learned this from Koneko” after bodying Phenex with the image of the Rook overlaying him. But man I get shivers when Issei talks about how he sacrificed his hand for power but even used that to use Christian artifacts to give himself an edge.
It's kinda like Austin Powers. Sure, wanting to shag every woman he sees is one of his main character traits, but he explictly WILL NOT bang someone who is not giving or is incapable of giving consent. It's pretty crazy that the same dude who's special moves are "Talk to the opponents breasts" and "Blow the enemies clothes off" has such a high respect for woman.
I am quite grateful for the existence of High School DxD, for it is the show that renewed my faith in the idea that fanservice can be handled competently when I was on the cusp of just denouncing the notion entirely after I had finished 3 seasons of Ikki Tousen, 2 seasons of Queen's Blade, and what I considered to be a poor adaptation of the Freezing manga.

Yes, definitely. Including the anime adaptation among the likes of Ikki Tousen and Queen's Blade was a bit much; Freezing's adaptation isn't hot garbage - I wouldn't go that far. My issues with it lie almost entirely with its focus on the fanservice when the manga doesn't actually commit to it as strongly. The anime adaptation makes its fanservice a selling point but fails to do anything with it. - For the record, I watched the anime first and then tried the manga on a whim, so my preference stems from the pleasant surprise I got out of it.
Freezing manga is good and a bit disturbing at times the anime is just good looking garbage. Going on a tangent here if you aren't interested in personal opinions about best harem anime then turn back: Best harem fan service shows i can think of are definitely Trinity Seven(Although the lack of season 2 even though it has more than enough material for one pisses me off) and High School DxD I would also sort of put To Love Ru there but only after Darkness the original series and motto to love ru are just funny but overall just okay slice of life harem shows, Darkness revitalized the series by giving it a semblance of progression and toning down formulaic Lala invents something, hijinks ensue, machine blows up, rinse, repeat, it gave us character progression by the truckloads for the more interesting characters and introduced some good new ones also the main character starting to become more self aware of his situation and becoming a bit more ballsy as the series goes along is definitely a breath of fresh air. Other harems i rate fairly high if only because it had the balls to have a character pick a girl and stick with it are Zero no Tsukaima and Chivalry of a Failed Knight one of them does it in the first couple of episode (although it blue balls you in the end since no season 2 probably ever and it ends of a cliffhanger) and the other does it during the course of the series wouldn't call either of them the greatest harem anime but they are really good.
I've always loved mythologies & seeing how the story combines both the biblical monotheistic concepts with the polytheistic concepts of the multiple pantheons is honestly my favorite part of the series. Plus despite being a magical fantasy world with actually devils, angels, dragons & literal gods. The characters, lore, history & the world building is all compounded in a grounded & realistic world which makes for very down to earth human characters.
Exactly I finished the series in 2 days and I went back a rewatch it idk I’m still thinking about it and I’m glad u found it Yes the fan service is cool in all but the backstories of Akeno and Keba are sad and help you coupe with these characters and then rias being dummy hot and wanting an actually loving relationship is something taken out of Shakespeare instead of power she just want to be loved and I’ll always love that and then Isseis development as the red dragon emperor is a big reason as well Becasue his love for rias and the girls he will always grow stronger
I’m glad that someone actually appreciates the great story, because most people just see it as fan service. You can actually watch it for the plot and not just for the ‘plot’.
I highly recommend this. Just binged the series due to this video, and not having actively seen “anime tiddies” in 20 years since I was a teenager (yeesh) I found myself seeing all the ecchi scenes as a comic relief in and of themselves, which I believe was the point with 90% of the scenes you see. I went in expecting to embarrass myself for watching it, and left feeling really good about it. It had a great story and really touching moments that are spurred on by comedy that inevitably comes from Issei’s “worldly desires”
I would watch it for the plot, except the "plot" kept getting in the way when I was watching it. I dislike blatant fanservice, and I Harems tend to kill any interest in the plot because they just utterly remove what would otherwise be interesting social interactions, for all the chicks want the MCs dick and don't mind one bit the MC is a idiot who wants to get it on with anyone he can. If I want that kind of show, I'd go watch Hentai.

I unironically love this show The show can make you feel stuff if it wants to it is kind of crazy in the later chapters of the manga all light novel depending on how you like to read it
HS DxD is probably one of my favorite Harem/Eechi anime. I always tell everyone that the fanservice is definitely right in your face but it also has a SOLID plot and is very enjoyable
DxD reminds me heaps of the anime Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, almost no one will take the recommendation to watch it seriously as pretty much glancing at them will turn alot of people off (non sexually) I came for DxD's idea of the chess piece system that a friend liked talking about, the fan service is just fun to watch on top of it all
Its also one of the few that actualy kinda chance upon why no actual relationship comes to be. Issei say it himsef after beeing asked, *1st episode spoiler* Beeing murdered on your first date, kinda gives you ptsd concerning reationships

Before the 10th volume, Issei admits several times that at least one girl loves him (he even considerates dating Asia in the 9th after her confession); so it's kind of bullshit the "oh, my mind can't comprehend love from these girls) he shows in the LN.
Yeah, Issei was a TAD inconsistent there. Eventually they kinda just scrapped it when the other girls basically forced him to start dating Rias so he'd do SOMETHING.
Best Harem anime imo. More than just fanservice. High school DxD has a actual story. Hero was a fantastic Season 4 adaptation. Thank God for the new studio. Cuz that Born ending almost killed the series. The future is bright for this series.
After watching season 4 I couldn’t agree more, only thing I wish is that they’d give less fan service and treat it as a true show, I love the humor and stuff too, it’s just I rather the time from fan service to be invested into fighting scenes, character development and the plot. I may be in the minority idk.

darryify I 100% agree with the art style being absolute garbage, the darker and more detailed animation helped with the overall atmosphere of the show, but the season had some of the best romantic drama in the entire series, and the fight scenes were pretty good as well, also it expanded on issei’s personal struggles and hang ups fairly well
I haven't seen this show, but just from your description of the main character, I can say I would like it far more than many other harem anime. The protagonists of the harem anime are my main gripe about those shows, which I just cannot stand. Great video!
Alterdream Issei is easily my favorite harem protag. He manages to actually have a defined personality with his own quirks and faults while still being likable.
I think the greatness of DXD (aside from the great story, awesome animation in seasons 1-3, and obvious fan-service) is how good of a character Issei actually is. He is not a typical Harem protagonist where the girls fall in love with him just because. But he actually does acts and deeds that make the girls fall in love with him. Rias fell in love with Issei gradually throughout the first season of DXD because of how kind issei was even though he was perverted. It was when Issei saved Rias from Riser did Rias fall hard which makes sense and really adds a lot to who Issei is. Despite having a dirty mind, Issei actually does care deeply about the people he considers his friends. This does not just extend to just the ladies as well but also with Gasper and Kiba. In Highschool DXD new, the girls take a backseat and Issei helps Kiba from episodes 1-6 and Gasper from episodes 7-12. He really is the best Harem protagonist.

im a fan of highschool dxd for its story, animation, and characters. its fucking awesome. also, the fanservice is fucking awesome, and akeno is my favorite character. im currently on vol 5 of the manga. and ive watched the entire anime.

Back when i was just a casual otaku and thought fairy tail was border line hentai one of my friends recommended that i watch DxD and it was my first ecchi harem anime so it has a special place on my top anime list
I remember finding DxD on one of... those nights. I was gonna pop in, fast forward to the REAL scenes, and then stop watching after a couple minutes and a sore right arm. I ended up watching the entire first season. This show has no right being as compelling as it is.
I love the up to date relatable humor in the dub. When he dropped that tide pod joke in last season I literally spit out my drink. I'm overly critical on most new anime but this is easily 10/10.
I feel like they just let the voice actors have fun with it. Some of Issei's insults just have me dying and koneko throwing out lines like "what it do" just make it so much more humorous
Competent MC= Better than most Harems. Having an MC that's in a harem whose, essentially, not enjoying it because they're just dull and oblivious kills the anime. Trinity Seven is another great example of MC being perverted and it really making the show a lot better.

yeah it does help a lot that the main character is an actual character & not just a collective gestalt of every viewer who can't really pick a waifu otherwise they would have to make a crapton of alternate last episodes including the one where Viewer-chan gets arrested for picking the loli
Also we basically know the canon is "Issei marries LITERALLY ALL OF THE GIRLS". The author has said "every heroine gets a happy ending" and... There was a "future kids visit the present" thing where like ten of Issei's kids showed up (each from a different mother) and shenanigans ensued. It was a debateably canon side-story but yeah.
Honestly part of the thing that I enjoy about Issei is that he knows when NOT to be a pervert, he went half a season not really being a pervert, which shows that he can be more than just a perv. Something that I really like about him, just kinda shows how good the show would be even if it weren't an ecchi harem anime.
My favorite Harem anime protagonist is Arata Kasuga from Trinity seven(which I wish was more popular). He is a lot like Issei but he is more mature in handling his perversion which makes him more likable.
I absolutely LOVE highschool DXD not because Rias is the perfect waifu for me or because the roamance between issei and Rias is very comforting for me. The actual reason is indeed the story for me. It was indeed unexpected for me. I watched DXD when I was getting into anime like 3-4 years ago and when someone told me about what kind of anime it is, a guy who gets chicks in every episode, that was my introduction to ecchi anime. I was like I want to watch this shit. DXD was my first ecchi anime at that time and I absolutely started with one intention of watching tits in every episode. But the very 1st episode changed my perception towards this anime, I was like, "woah the story looks somewhat interesting I need to continue." and I watched the whole 3 season within a week and I was like, "Oh my god! this is good stuff." And that's when I fell in love with the anime. Story was absolute more hell a lot interesting than I thought. It had right amount of it's fan service. Rias had her own charm the way she thinks about her teammates, secretly loving issei and not telling him cuz she thinks issei has no feelings for her whereas Issei never tells her feeling to Rias thinking she don't deserve a person like him. All these moments were just so much for me. I was expecting just a generic no good guy having fun with girls and I found something that's completely different. And after that I was never able to watch any ecchi anime cuz I actually searched for any resemblance like DXD and what I got was the main protagonist MISTAKELY having all kinds of fun, his hands go somewhere else and it's a mistake. Sekirei, Shinmai, Freezing (the 1st season was good) all these anime tried to have a generic story but in the end all these end with guy having sex in MISTAKE. DXD holds a special place in my list and I can't effing wait for 4th season.
DXD surprised me when I went into the show. I knew I was going to be diving into one of the top ecchi anime out there but I was surprised to see that there was actually an amazing story and character growth behind all that fanservice. While I do enjoy the ecchi moments, I wish that they didn't have to emphasize the ecchi part at times of deeper story plots. I felt like they were unneeded in some scenes and took away from those heavier moments. Otherwise great show that surprised me

After that watch Berserk(read the manga after), Watch Evangelion, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Fist of the north star, Cowboy Bebop, Your lie in April, Death Note i dunno these are just my personal favourites
Great synopsis. I love DxD, it's really the "kitchen sink" anime that just has everything I could ever want in an anime, aside from giant mecha (but the creator loves Gundam, so maybe some day...). I do wish you mentioned the soundtrack, it's possibly my favorite anime soundtrack of all time, with literally dozens of amazing pieces of music. And not only is the music epic, touching, beautiful, and so forth for scenes where such atmosphere is appropriate, the music also pulls "double duty" by being a large part of the humor. Most often when a dramatic or tense piece of music is used as the backdrop for Issei declaring his love of breasts or such, the inappropriateness of the music for what's happening on screen is the funniest part of such scenes.
In the LN, within a series of related side stories one of the characters is revealed a Gundam otaku and even makes real (though not totally working) Mechas to fight in one instance.
Well, Koneko is the only character that does that, but that's because she is supposed to be the Tsundere. Of course, Issei's perverted actions are rarely on accident.

To be totally honest when I started watching this show due to a friend’s recommendation I never knew that the show was ecchi at all, and to be honest the show actually tells a great story about a guy who is loved and liked for who he is and not based on appearances which is a really good message
Issei's hair pisses me off so much that I couldn't stand more than 3 episodes. I could see what was good, but god fucking damn how does your fucking hair work?! It's halfway between reasonably hair and anime hair, it's the uncanny valley of hair and I hate it
This was my gateway anime, I was 12 and had just begun year 5 (meaning new school). My first friends were all geeks and two of the were asian and hardcore anime fans. Attack on Titan had just blown up and I was interested in watching it. Instead the two showed me this and I was hooked. Akeno was my first waifu
I enjoyed the anime. Now, I'm a respectable gentleman who does enjoy his fair share of ecchi; however, High School DxD (it's pronounced "dee-dee," as it is a shortened version of the nickname "Dragon of Dragons" that is attributed to the Dimensional Gap-dwelling Great Red) surpassed that with its characters. And then, I read the light novels, and they deepened my appreciation for the series. It adds much more depth to the world that is lacking in the anime (which I do understand, as not a lot can be shoved into a 22 minute period of time...giggity). Oh, and if you don't think that lolis outside of Koneko existed, just wait until you see the youkai Kunou (complete with her own eyecatches). I enjoyed the series FINALLY getting back to the LNs with the Kyoto arc.
Of course dont forget the creeepy gothic lolita that is Ophis, who is the ancient dragon of time and nothingness. And she is disturbing for all the right reasons (WHY DID SHE TAKE THAT FORM THO)
Same here...The only time I felt invested and loved a fanservice heavy show was Kill la Kill, and I'd argue the fanservice there is barely fanservice at all, despite lots of skin shown. It doesn't feel sexual, completely different tone, and it has an actual thematic point.

I personally feel that Highschool DxD's biggest strength is that the Fanservice, although it's ALWAYS there and in high abundance, it never allows it's own fanservice to distract from the story or the main point of a scene. The fanservice is integrated into the plot without interrupting it, and that's actually a very rare skill for an ecchi anime that I completely appreciate. I typically don't like fanservice anime, but I do like DxD. I believe that's the reason.
That's until Disney changed the show LoL.
I think the first episode has some front-loaded (no pun intended) fan sevice that just seems to come out of nowhere, but generally I agree.
To me the girls also come across as a lot more confident. In a lot of bad ecchi series they come across as more so weak and desperate which kind of makes me feel bad for finding them sexy. In Highschool DxD the girls often are very confident and actually knowingly push their sexuality onto others.
So it's more so him accepting their gifts rather than taking advantage of those girls.
I agree as far as the first three seasons, however, season 4 has fanservice take up too much plot
The reason for that is that in the source material, the novel, the ecchie is pretty minimal compared to the anime, only about 5% of the text of a volume is usually about ecchie and fanservice, 80% is usually just shounen shenanigans and 15% is dedicated to either plot development, world building or character development.
In the anime the amount of ecchie has been greatly exaggerated, but it still has a storyline in the source material to follow so it may be the result from that.
I watched it first for the boobs, but as the 1st season came to an end, the story about Sacred Gears, The Dragons, and other stuff made me want to continue. Sadly, I can't say the same for my friends

If you can find translations of the light novels, the series gets REALLY into that. So much more goes on with the power aspects of dragons and sacred gears and there's some stuff that the 3rd and 4th season left out that make it even more interesting. But moving into the content that would be the 5th season and beyond, shit goes insane, with them really giving context to the dragons and a greater look into humanity's role within the three great factions. They even bring in other things that were basically disregarded early on, like the fucking vampires (which early on, the author was like "Gasper's a vampire. It sucked for him. He slowly gets over it. Moving on.")

I really like Highschool DxD because it's way more than just fanservice, and has a protagonist who isn't ashamed of being a pervert but even though being a pervert, still treats woman with respect instead of seeing them as mere objects for his fetishes unlike many other perverts depicted in anime. For me this is also a part what makes Isei such a likable character, open and honest about who he is and what he desires but never crosses the moral line.

I generally hate ecchi anime and fanservice but I was bored and in a weird mood one day and this one actually turned out fun. I think you hit the nail on the head that it bypasses the creep factor that most of them have, and the mythos is actually pretty damn well done.

Kara R you seem to have some hangups. I hate to find myself in a comments section defending high school DxD, but it’s extremely obvious that the main character wouldn’t do that, considering how aggressively he holds himself back from taking advantage of Asia.
The greatest fight in terms of set up and desperation happened at the end of season one with the solo duel against Phenex for me. The only issue I had was the overly long length of Issei’s crediting of his skills to his comrades. I feel like they could have kept them short and simply say “I learned THIS from-“ and specify which character. They already got the chess motif and anime’s a visual medium. For example he could have yelled “I learned this from Koneko” after bodying Phenex with the image of the Rook overlaying him.
But man I get shivers when Issei talks about how he sacrificed his hand for power but even used that to use Christian artifacts to give himself an edge.
It was surprisingly non-weird, but then suddenly they added an underage boy who cross dresses... That's a recipe for disaster.

I am quite grateful for the existence of High School DxD, for it is the show that renewed my faith in the idea that fanservice can be handled competently when I was on the cusp of just denouncing the notion entirely after I had finished 3 seasons of Ikki Tousen, 2 seasons of Queen's Blade, and what I considered to be a poor adaptation of the Freezing manga.

Yes, definitely. Including the anime adaptation among the likes of Ikki Tousen and Queen's Blade was a bit much; Freezing's adaptation isn't hot garbage - I wouldn't go that far. My issues with it lie almost entirely with its focus on the fanservice when the manga doesn't actually commit to it as strongly. The anime adaptation makes its fanservice a selling point but fails to do anything with it.
- For the record, I watched the anime first and then tried the manga on a whim, so my preference stems from the pleasant surprise I got out of it.
Freezing manga is good and a bit disturbing at times the anime is just good looking garbage.
Going on a tangent here if you aren't interested in personal opinions about best harem anime then turn back:
Best harem fan service shows i can think of are definitely Trinity Seven(Although the lack of season 2 even though it has more than enough material for one pisses me off) and High School DxD
I would also sort of put To Love Ru there but only after Darkness the original series and motto to love ru are just funny but overall just okay slice of life harem shows, Darkness revitalized the series by giving it a semblance of progression and toning down formulaic Lala invents something, hijinks ensue, machine blows up, rinse, repeat, it gave us character progression by the truckloads for the more interesting characters and introduced some good new ones also the main character starting to become more self aware of his situation and becoming a bit more ballsy as the series goes along is definitely a breath of fresh air.
Other harems i rate fairly high if only because it had the balls to have a character pick a girl and stick with it are Zero no Tsukaima and Chivalry of a Failed Knight one of them does it in the first couple of episode (although it blue balls you in the end since no season 2 probably ever and it ends of a cliffhanger) and the other does it during the course of the series wouldn't call either of them the greatest harem anime but they are really good.
I've always loved mythologies & seeing how the story combines both the biblical monotheistic concepts with the polytheistic concepts of the multiple pantheons is honestly my favorite part of the series. Plus despite being a magical fantasy world with actually devils, angels, dragons & literal gods. The characters, lore, history & the world building is all compounded in a grounded & realistic world which makes for very down to earth human characters.
Exactly I finished the series in 2 days and I went back a rewatch it idk I’m still thinking about it and I’m glad u found it Yes the fan service is cool in all but the backstories of Akeno and Keba are sad and help you coupe with these characters and then rias being dummy hot and wanting an actually loving relationship is something taken out of Shakespeare instead of power she just want to be loved and I’ll always love that and then Isseis development as the red dragon emperor is a big reason as well Becasue his love for rias and the girls he will always grow stronger

I highly recommend this. Just binged the series due to this video, and not having actively seen “anime tiddies” in 20 years since I was a teenager (yeesh) I found myself seeing all the ecchi scenes as a comic relief in and of themselves, which I believe was the point with 90% of the scenes you see.
I went in expecting to embarrass myself for watching it, and left feeling really good about it. It had a great story and really touching moments that are spurred on by comedy that inevitably comes from Issei’s “worldly desires”

HS DxD is probably one of my favorite Harem/Eechi anime. I always tell everyone that the fanservice is definitely right in your face but it also has a SOLID plot and is very enjoyable
DxD reminds me heaps of the anime Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, almost no one will take the recommendation to watch it seriously as pretty much glancing at them will turn alot of people off (non sexually) I came for DxD's idea of the chess piece system that a friend liked talking about, the fan service is just fun to watch on top of it all

Yeah, Issei was a TAD inconsistent there. Eventually they kinda just scrapped it when the other girls basically forced him to start dating Rias so he'd do SOMETHING.

darryify I 100% agree with the art style being absolute garbage, the darker and more detailed animation helped with the overall atmosphere of the show, but the season had some of the best romantic drama in the entire series, and the fight scenes were pretty good as well, also it expanded on issei’s personal struggles and hang ups fairly well

I think the greatness of DXD (aside from the great story, awesome animation in seasons 1-3, and obvious fan-service) is how good of a character Issei actually is. He is not a typical Harem protagonist where the girls fall in love with him just because. But he actually does acts and deeds that make the girls fall in love with him. Rias fell in love with Issei gradually throughout the first season of DXD because of how kind issei was even though he was perverted. It was when Issei saved Rias from Riser did Rias fall hard which makes sense and really adds a lot to who Issei is. Despite having a dirty mind, Issei actually does care deeply about the people he considers his friends. This does not just extend to just the ladies as well but also with Gasper and Kiba. In Highschool DXD new, the girls take a backseat and Issei helps Kiba from episodes 1-6 and Gasper from episodes 7-12. He really is the best Harem protagonist.

I remember finding DxD on one of... those nights. I was gonna pop in, fast forward to the REAL scenes, and then stop watching after a couple minutes and a sore right arm. I ended up watching the entire first season. This show has no right being as compelling as it is.
I love the up to date relatable humor in the dub. When he dropped that tide pod joke in last season I literally spit out my drink. I'm overly critical on most new anime but this is easily 10/10.
I feel like they just let the voice actors have fun with it. Some of Issei's insults just have me dying and koneko throwing out lines like "what it do" just make it so much more humorous

Competent MC= Better than most Harems. Having an MC that's in a harem whose, essentially, not enjoying it because they're just dull and oblivious kills the anime. Trinity Seven is another great example of MC being perverted and it really making the show a lot better.

yeah it does help a lot that the main character is an actual character & not just a collective gestalt of every viewer who can't really pick a waifu otherwise they would have to make a crapton of alternate last episodes including the one where Viewer-chan gets arrested for picking the loli
Also we basically know the canon is "Issei marries LITERALLY ALL OF THE GIRLS". The author has said "every heroine gets a happy ending" and... There was a "future kids visit the present" thing where like ten of Issei's kids showed up (each from a different mother) and shenanigans ensued. It was a debateably canon side-story but yeah.

Honestly part of the thing that I enjoy about Issei is that he knows when NOT to be a pervert, he went half a season not really being a pervert, which shows that he can be more than just a perv. Something that I really like about him, just kinda shows how good the show would be even if it weren't an ecchi harem anime.
My favorite Harem anime protagonist is Arata Kasuga from Trinity seven(which I wish was more popular). He is a lot like Issei but he is more mature in handling his perversion which makes him more likable.

I absolutely LOVE highschool DXD not because Rias is the perfect waifu for me or because the roamance between issei and Rias is very comforting for me. The actual reason is indeed the story for me. It was indeed unexpected for me. I watched DXD when I was getting into anime like 3-4 years ago and when someone told me about what kind of anime it is, a guy who gets chicks in every episode, that was my introduction to ecchi anime. I was like I want to watch this shit. DXD was my first ecchi anime at that time and I absolutely started with one intention of watching tits in every episode. But the very 1st episode changed my perception towards this anime, I was like, "woah the story looks somewhat interesting I need to continue." and I watched the whole 3 season within a week and I was like, "Oh my god! this is good stuff." And that's when I fell in love with the anime. Story was absolute more hell a lot interesting than I thought. It had right amount of it's fan service.
Rias had her own charm the way she thinks about her teammates, secretly loving issei and not telling him cuz she thinks issei has no feelings for her whereas Issei never tells her feeling to Rias thinking she don't deserve a person like him. All these moments were just so much for me. I was expecting just a generic no good guy having fun with girls and I found something that's completely different. And after that I was never able to watch any ecchi anime cuz I actually searched for any resemblance like DXD and what I got was the main protagonist MISTAKELY having all kinds of fun, his hands go somewhere else and it's a mistake. Sekirei, Shinmai, Freezing (the 1st season was good) all these anime tried to have a generic story but in the end all these end with guy having sex in MISTAKE. DXD holds a special place in my list and I can't effing wait for 4th season.
DXD surprised me when I went into the show. I knew I was going to be diving into one of the top ecchi anime out there but I was surprised to see that there was actually an amazing story and character growth behind all that fanservice. While I do enjoy the ecchi moments, I wish that they didn't have to emphasize the ecchi part at times of deeper story plots. I felt like they were unneeded in some scenes and took away from those heavier moments. Otherwise great show that surprised me

Great synopsis. I love DxD, it's really the "kitchen sink" anime that just has everything I could ever want in an anime, aside from giant mecha (but the creator loves Gundam, so maybe some day...).
I do wish you mentioned the soundtrack, it's possibly my favorite anime soundtrack of all time, with literally dozens of amazing pieces of music. And not only is the music epic, touching, beautiful, and so forth for scenes where such atmosphere is appropriate, the music also pulls "double duty" by being a large part of the humor. Most often when a dramatic or tense piece of music is used as the backdrop for Issei declaring his love of breasts or such, the inappropriateness of the music for what's happening on screen is the funniest part of such scenes.
In the LN, within a series of related side stories one of the characters is revealed a Gundam otaku and even makes real (though not totally working) Mechas to fight in one instance.

To be totally honest when I started watching this show due to a friend’s recommendation I never knew that the show was ecchi at all, and to be honest the show actually tells a great story about a guy who is loved and liked for who he is and not based on appearances which is a really good message

This was my gateway anime, I was 12 and had just begun year 5 (meaning new school). My first friends were all geeks and two of the were asian and hardcore anime fans. Attack on Titan had just blown up and I was interested in watching it. Instead the two showed me this and I was hooked. Akeno was my first waifu

I enjoyed the anime. Now, I'm a respectable gentleman who does enjoy his fair share of ecchi; however, High School DxD (it's pronounced "dee-dee," as it is a shortened version of the nickname "Dragon of Dragons" that is attributed to the Dimensional Gap-dwelling Great Red) surpassed that with its characters.
And then, I read the light novels, and they deepened my appreciation for the series. It adds much more depth to the world that is lacking in the anime (which I do understand, as not a lot can be shoved into a 22 minute period of time...giggity).
Oh, and if you don't think that lolis outside of Koneko existed, just wait until you see the youkai Kunou (complete with her own eyecatches). I enjoyed the series FINALLY getting back to the LNs with the Kyoto arc.
Of course dont forget the creeepy gothic lolita that is Ophis, who is the ancient dragon of time and nothingness. And she is disturbing for all the right reasons (WHY DID SHE TAKE THAT FORM THO)
This genre still isn't anything for me, but I really do appreciate the steps this anime takes to be more respectable than the rest
Same here...The only time I felt invested and loved a fanservice heavy show was Kill la Kill, and I'd argue the fanservice there is barely fanservice at all, despite lots of skin shown. It doesn't feel sexual, completely different tone, and it has an actual thematic point.
