    Excellent job guys! I ran Rim2River 2 weeks after you were there, and went back mid August to run R2R. Heading back in late Oct to get in one more Rim2River run, this time with my daughter. She started running R2R with me at age 15, and racked up 5 in a row.

      That's so awesome you get to do that with your daughter! And impressive!! The Grand Canyon is such an incredible place, I'm jealous you two get to spend so much time there. Keep being awesome! And thank you for watching the video and taking time to comment.

      Was it crazy hot during those summer months? Thinking of doing R2R2R in June. We’d likely do a very early start (1 am or so)

    • @austinado16
      @austinado16 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaredmcclure9615 I'll share my personal thoughts on R2R. Others may have a different take on it. I, personally, would not hike or run in the canyon during June and July. The heat is stifling and extremely dangerous, and the sun's angles are directly overhead, which reduces any shade that might be available. Factor in altitude, and the fact that this isn't a "normal" walk/hike/run type of trail....there are miles and miles of gnarly rock and log steps with deep dug out areas on either side, and crazy steep climbing and descending....and it just makes a recipe for disaster. Plus, if you did leave at midnight, 1, 2, etc. you wind up missing out on seeing a large portion of the canyon, because you're traveling with a headlamp on.
      IMO, the better months for R2R and Rim2River, are April/May, and Mid-Aug-Oct. Their monsoon season begins around the last week of July and first week of August, and it dramatically changes the temps at the rims and down inside. For example, mid-Aug, it will be 45*F overnight on the North Rim, maybe a high of 95*F at phantom, and 80-85*F at the South Rim. If you do the math on your travel time, you can get a pretty good idea of what temps will be like, based on your starting time, and travel speed. For example, if we leave North Rim at 3am (Mid-Aug) at 45*F, it will be about 75*F, 7.5mi and 1.5hr of run time later, at Cottonwood Campground. Temps will increase to 85ish during the 1.5hr 7.5mi run into Phantom, but then remain there, during the 9.5mi climb to the rim, due to every increasing altitude, up to 7,000'. So when we arrive at around 11-12, it's been 75-80ish, the entire last 5-6mi (from the top of Devil's Cork Screw and onward to the S. Rim).
      When I've run R2R in Oct., from the N. Rim, I've waited until first light, and stepped onto the trail when lighting was nice, and no headlamp was needed. That was fantastic, because in August, I don't get to see that first 4mi of trail, due to running in the dark, until just about Manzanita Rest Stop, about 5.5mi down. Same with Rim2River. In May, I wait until sunrise to step in, and in October, I can wait until 6:30am, which is really nice. You can see our 2019 R2R, and our 2020 and 2021 Rim2Rivers on my channel. I've run both a few times amongst those trips, but didn't bring a camera because I wanted to push the pace pretty hard and really get after it. When we video, it's a much more relaxed cruise.

    Awesome coverage and accomplishment - congrats! I was wondering, why did you choose to go up the Bright Angel Trail on the way back as opposed to the way you came down (South Kaibab)? Variety? Water access?

    • @wolfliferunning
      @wolfliferunning  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question, and you nailed it! Water. There are no pump houses on South Kaibab, so you have to carry all your water for the climb. We did our run in late May since we had friends doing the R2R and had to wait for the north rim to open. And it was really hot. I know people going for "fast times" to South Kaibab up, but also tend to do it in cooler weather.
      Have a great trip, such an amazing place!

    • @wolfliferunning
      @wolfliferunning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for checking out the video! We used the AllTrails App on our phones (make sure to download the offline map, there is very little cell reception at the canyon) and for water check out the official NPS website for the most current pumphouse info (links below). It’s good to double check the list before you hike too as they open/close the pump houses at different dates and sometimes they are closed for maintenance.

      Hey Mark! Sorry for the late reply, we were out running in the Tetons last week. We had friends drop us off at the SK trail head in the morning. But you can also take the shuttle from the main South Rim Visitor Center starting at 4am. Then catch the shuttle from BA to the visitor center after. The shuttle runs until 8pm I believe. Or you can also park about a mile down from the SK trail head at the intersection you turn down. Then catch the shuttle from BA to SK when done. This will let you start earlier than the shuttle. Let me know if you have any other questions! And let us know how it goes!!

      Sorry about that! Once the sun came up and the heat kicked in, watching our time went out the window. It took us about 7:30 to make it to the north rim. That's with about 45 minutes at the Tunnel pump house to get rehydrated from the big climb in the sun. It took us just under 10 hours to make it back (just over 17 hours total). Including another 45 minutes at Phantom Ranch enjoying some lemonade before the big climb up BA.

      Hey Roman, You can camp at either Phantom Ranch or Cottenwood inside the canyon but would need to get a permit. Some people will also do one crossing then camp at the opposite rim, then head back the next day. I Believe this can be done without a permit.
