It's a damn cruel world we live in that this was never ported to the Saturn or Dreamcast. These sprites are amazing. I might even like the way the environments here better than in OutRun 2
Out of all Sega arcade games, this one will always have a special place in my heart! I met my first love while playing it...the one that got away. The game was awesome too, a real speed rush. Remember wanting to own that arcade cabinet. Then found the genesis version and was so dissapointed.. Damn, if only they had released it on the CD instead!
I fondly remember playing this when I used to go in the arcade when my parents took me on holiday. I loved this game with a passion! Thank you for taking me back to a wonderful time!
Oh my god, the memories. I used to play this ALL the time in my local arcade. Only beat it once, though. They had the difficulty turned up pretty high. I should get MAME and play this again.
And one of the most underrated racing games of all time. I can understand not appealing to the Sega Genesis version; it gets annoying having to steer to only one angle because of the buttons, but when you play the arcade version with the steering wheel, it's much more fun, IMO.

I used to play this a lot in my local arcade when I was a kid. For a boy who loved geography and cars and driving, this was the perfect game in the arcade.

I've always pictured a sequel to this game as Outrun 3. Give it the same vibe of a competition between 8 or so street racing couples from all over, in a rally around the world. Each of them with their own cool style, story, and genre of music. Have it so that between regions you could talk to the other competitors and upgrade your car with winnings, get story beats based on how well youre doing, etc. It would basically be Outrun meets Ridge Racer Type 4. There's still so much potential in the arcade racing genre.

First time I saw Arcade version was on youtube. In amy teenies I thought there was only mega/genesis version. The music playing on car selection is awesome/wonderful.
It was seriously ten-plus years after this thing came out that I realized the characters weren’t based on anything. Like, my 90’s kid brain concluded that anything so weird and specific as the driver pairings had to be from a cartoon or comic or something. Probably just a result of staying up to watch “Speed Zone” one too many times.
I wish there could be some sort of real "Outrunner´s Race", maybe not around the world, but with that same vibe and the guitar solo playing in the end as the winner and losers are pranked / saluted like that, would be awesome!
Wild Chaser was my favorite. Top speed on the road was 260. But it was an off road buggy. So I was able to take Wild Chaser off the road. If there were no obstacles, that was an additional 15 to the top speed making it 275.

one issue with all these outrunner videos on youtube. they are missing car animations because they arent using analog control. the turning is instant instead of smooth. wanna see smooth turning look at the genesis version that took into concideration of digital control, or an actual arcade cabinet

Would have been interesting to see how well 32X could have done on this one. I bet the Saturn would be needed to get it arcade perfect. What a game, Sega was on top of the world in 1992. The first video game to get a world wide release date happened that year too with Sonic Tuesday. Are you up 2 it?

Definitely a great outrun sequal. Same engine but improved number of sprites, digital sounds and large background scenery.
It used Sega System 32 wich is more powerful than older original OutRun/X board.
