@Diann Hazelton I'm trying red garnet amaranth on coco coir mats. I started them Friday. Tomorrow they go into blackout. SO far they're looking good. Good, white root growth, nice start of red colour. My issue is how am I going to water these as the trays I have are deep and these shouldn't be in that much water.
I use dr. Zymes eliminator for an anti-fungal. Its certified organic and the plants love it. I use it on all my micro trays when I first plant them. Also I've had some success with using chamomile tea as anti fungal

Have you ever considerd the 'rippling' and lesser production on your micromats may be because you are not treating them correctly? You should add ALL the water needed for the whole germination period in one go, and leave the trays undisturbed untill it is time to uncover. That said, I do prefer soil or coir as medium as it is more easily compostable and I can reuse in my market garden.

i have a question. How do you sell the microgreens? Many microgreen farmers sell the microgreens in boxes 112x60 mm. How can I pack this from a 1020 tray in to a selling box like this? Or should i fit a 1020 tray with 8 boxes 112x60 mm to grow?
Would love to see you guys experiment with the coco coir mats from cityhydro. I'm experimenting with them right now with some success, but I'd love to get y'alls opinion on them.

Great question! You can also bottom water before it goes into the light, but we’ve noticed it is easy to over-water and create issues such as mold. That’s why we prefer a quick top watering during germination, then moving to bottom watering where we can be a bit less careful about water quantity!

One thing about your experiments is you're showing what is ideal for the coco coir but not ideal for the mats/paper towel/other experiment. You should do a tray as what would be ideal for them, like an extra day of weight or extra day of blackout and then letting us know how much longer it would take for the ideal parameters for the other product, so a decision can be made of if the extra time for harvest is worth it. Glad I found you today though for sure, I'm binge watching!

Guys on all your tests of a soil/coco/peat etc. mix vs hydroponics mats or soilless. It would only be fair to actually heighten the trays containing the mats so they are at similar "soil height" when comparing.. that's a 1,5/2" height difference. Also why are they being grown in a shallow seed starter tray and not a deep one? There's not enough air for the roots to develop properly nor space for them to look for moisture by stressing them. While I`m sure that soil and coco coir are the most recommendable, consistent and easy medium to use I`m also certain that a master grower with years of experience in hydro or aeroponics can dial this in and get amazing results on whatever media (less) you want to use. Starting off from day 1 with A mixture of an organic rooting stimulant, perfect water ph, perfect water temperature and heat mats will significantly improve any experiment towards soilless and/or inert media, By dialing in nutrition and temperatures significant yield increases can be achieved over soil/coco, this has been proven millions of times in greenhouses all over the world. While I absolutely agree on the fact that I wouldn`t recommend this to any beginning farmer/grower due to all the things that can go wrong, and the precise nature of operating it. There are significant benefits to soilless, hydroponic and aeroponic growing techniques that are worth exploring and will greatly contribute to finding more sustainable ways to grow food in the future. I was drawn to this video by my interest for the micromats, but I`m not defending them, they're overpriced and there are good "mat" alternatives. However I do think much better results can be achieved with them and ANY vs test is only valid if both techniques or growing styles are properly executed. Its not the growing medium alone that makes the difference, that's just nonsense. Its about what you do with it.They both require totally different inputs and I don`t see enough effort being put in on the hydro side. Love your channel, really informative videos, keep up the good work, but for the love of science, get your inert media game together on the nutrition side.
