- Time for a grand Byzantine adventure!
In this scenario, you play as Alexios Komnenos as he attempts to restore the Byzantine Empire to its former glory. You have to balance your popular support with conquests of former Byzantine cities, as well as the raids from both the Normans and the Seljuks.

So fun historical fact, by 1081 a pretty large portion of the Varangian Guard was actually made up of English recruits who’d fled the Normans. They actually ended up becoming the Guard’s most numerous members, and by the 13th century it was being called the English Guard in some sources
Most frustrating start ever. Run into kipchaks, die. Don't find enough soldiers, die. Bad pathing while trying to take out vikings, die. Go to army base on the right first, loose too many solders and die. Have random events trigger at the wrong that reduce legitimacy, die. The rest of the mission is good, but the start is infuriating.
Agreed, got a rebellion with 70 legitimacy, and fighting that rebelion triggered another one, losing me a 2hr game, i already defeated the normans....this scenario needs rebalance
It is a theme for this dlc. So hard to hust enjoy playing camapign. If i wanted atress there is 1v1
How to prevent those damned random events, I was crushing those enemies, and suddenly 2x bad events/scandals from out of nowhere, legitimacy under 50 and bam rebellion strikes
this along with Seljuk are my favorite Philthy scenarios
Thank you!
The Byzantines are back baby! My favorite civ! And Alexios Komnenos is a great choice represent the Byzantines here with the Byzantine Restoration he initiated.
To all single player campaign players. I have just posted "The Qin Dynasty". A 5 scenario campaign chronicling the events leading to Chinas first Emperor. Enjoy.
On my first try on hard I focused on getting mainland Greek cities first, somehow the Normans destroyed all of my docks and I had no way to rebuild them. The second time around I focused on the naval control. You can steal 3 relics pretty much right away, get a crusader army and conquer the islands with it. Normans got bombarded (dromoned?) into oblivion and it was smooth sailing from there.
The same happened to my docks. I converted the Turkish transport ships and used those.
This is my favorite scenario from the new DLC, loved it as a mod and with the map lighting its just beautiful. Make sure at the start to target down the 2 zerks on staying ground with your starting army. With the first tax do 1 circus race and produce a monk and legionarys. Then u can immediately go to liberate greece, use alexios to tank, the monk to heal and convert, with the tax raise u should have a nice flow
I have been noticing some serious bugs with this expansion. It almost seems like there is a lag when I select new units or buildings or select other parts of the mini map. I also have a hard time seeing upgrade descriptions as well. Sometimes the gameplay is normal but it seems to get worse as I play the game.
i did pretty much everything wrong in this scenario (on highest difficulty). Took me 3 tries to depose the emperor because i couldn’t find the army but kept running into red. With 2 legionaries to start with i hid behind my walls waiting forever for the meager tribute to trickle in. I didn’t dare using my hero unit since it said i’d lose legitimacy whenever he got wounded and i thought that means whenever he loses HP. that’s the definition of getting wounded right? right? it would have said KILLED otherwise i thought. so my legitimacy always fell below 50 pretty quickly and when blue attacked it was game over. So i thought what’s the easiest way to build legitimacy? i did the chariot race thing and in my first try hit the outcome where the losing team riots and attacks the city. so i didn’t dare trying that again anytime soon. The next best option was recruiting 20 vikings which on 400 gold per year took ONLY 10 in game years while i was doing nothing but hiding behind my walls and seeing legitimacy fall due to scandals until blue attacked again.
at that point i gave up and tried other scenarios.
later i tried again and invested the first 400g into chariot and used a save game until i found the winning one so i could at least start from a position of 70+ legitimacy while building my varangian guard.
easily the most frustrating Aoe2 scenario i played to date.
have you managed to pass it with 70+ legitimacy?
Oh come on Ornlu, you know that if you start converting before they aggro on your other units they will target the monks no matter what, the trick is have them focus on your other units and then converting them
You lost sooo many monks because of this lol
Anyway, love this scenario, the start is a bit tedious and unnecessarily hard tho, but after that it's great
This is my favorite scenario. It certainly isn’t easy especially the first go around. I love the whole concept of having to put the empire back together. And the barbarian invasion plus the rebellion make for unexpected challenges. I do wish the Normans and Turks were more of a threat or that yellow played more of an aggressive role. But still a ton of fun
classic Ornlu micro moment at the start, I remember filthydelphia trashtalking u for that in the mod version 11
If you go full monk from the start you can basically go up to 200 pop without building almost any units...
Just did this. Had eastern sword man, Teutonic knights, crusader knights, serjeants, Mamelukes, and regular long swordsmen storming the Normans last because they destroyed all my docks. Had to convert the Seljuk Turks’ docks
What triggers the peshnegs to attack? The smash my city then when I’m on the verge of beating them my legitamcy drops and I get double teamed with blue in the mix
Monks heal monks, and scouting by the hero and set formations to trap the following enemies as possible for the safety move...
Ohh my god is every scenario multiple hours long?
Yes if you’re Ornlu
They are because All scenarios were Made individually with longer pauses in between each release, so Author spent a lot more time in making each single scenario
I was waiting for this day
I believe the correct pronunciation of Komnenos is Ko-mne-NOS, with the emphasis on the last vowel :)
OMG i love this content keep up the good work
Remember, no Russians 10:51 cod mw2 ref had me off guard
Why when I play my counters show nothing? Ot's not 58/100, instead it always show
I need help to understand what triggers the pretenders. On my 1st run they appeared at minute 23, I was going straight for the town on south greece and didn't even have time to reach it when they showed up, managed those but then I lost the monument to the pechenegs (they also come really soon) because I retreated everything to the castle. On my 2nd run the pretenders appeared at min 14, only had time to create 4 monk, got them and komnenos to help convert the 3 red guys on castle range, then converted the 4 swordmen outside the city and those pretenders come with 100+ units, worse than before. Then I see this video and Ornlu doesn't get them in 50 minutes not even the pechenegs. Is it reworked?
i think the game notes state you get a rebellion if legitimacy drops below 50. check your replays to see if this triggers them. always try to keep legitimacy 60+ due to scandals randomly reducing legitness.
am i the only person who doesn't know how to guide the soldiers or villagers, with that flag thing, that he used??
Why devs won't rename knight line to heavy cavalry. It would not only fit to european civs but also to all the other civs.
there is no chance of losing
komninos it is
This scenario, in my opinion, one of the more well-designed scenarios by Filthy. You cant win unless you take initiative, you need to have perfect monk micro(p.s. I say so because I value the Bulgarian Konniks and Sicilian Cavaliers a lot here as tanks), also prioritizing wrong objectives can lead to bad stuffs like rebellions, and also the Pecheneg hordes, all were perfect. Hats off. Beyond that, I felt, Cataphracts and Imp Legionaries were beyond useless here. Just train Varangians and build Keeps and double walls all over the base..
legionaries are great for liberating greece and the balkans, i transitioned to cataphract arbalest later, catas are tanky and fast enough to catch the seljuk units without needing to many upgrades, arbalest were my post imp unit with already established good income
I have a question, guys: This scenario was designed by one of the players, but did the game pay him money to take the copyright, or did you contact him, or did you take the scenario without his knowledge?
Filthy worked with the FE team to polish them, I think it's safe to say he was paid. He also worked for them before.
Komotaro
Just do it in 1 part
again, to be play more better...
