One of the most underrated actors, he was supposed to be the successor of Amitabh Era.. but since the Era itself changed to love stories, which allowed 3 khans emergence. I would like to specially mention one scene in Pukar movie(he won national actor award) when Anil Kapoor chatting with Madhuri's father regarding spy's following him everywhere suspecting him to be the traitor.

AK what a darling/sweetheart this man is! #sitwithhitlist The media was very unfair to him in the 1980s though he gave many hits and several good/great performances. They bitched about him and criticized him to death, playing up to star sons like Sunny Deol and Sunjay Dutt and created all kinds of ontroversies where he was painted as the bad guy. At some point even some top actresses (Dimple, Jayaprada) were reluctant to work with him. AK never let all this affect him negatively. Commendable how he maintained his focus on good cinema and channeled his acting prowess to constantly give good to great performances. Most top actressess (Meenakshi, Sridevi, Madhuri, Juhi) loved working with him and made great jodis with him. Jackie was always faithful to his friend and Anil-Jackie remained the most popular bromance jodi until the mid 90s. Today - AK is revered and admired for his performances, fitness and staying power! Way to go. A real hero and a role model.

Even i consider Anil one of the finest actors in India and in Mashaal he overshadowed Dilip Kumar in a few scenes too. The movies that were written for Amitabh such as Mashaal, Meri Jung and Mr.India, went to Anil. He was the only actor in 1980s who challenged Amitabh B in 1988-1990 period with Tezaab and Ram Lakhan.
He had everything in him to become the premium star. The perception of superstardom is created by producers, screen writers and directors so that they can make 3-4 big projects over a period of 10 years and sell them at a premium. Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra and Javed Akhtar were helping him to achieve that in 80s.
In reality if we look at just the BO figures Mithun was a much bigger and consistent star of 80s, but he was not considered premium. The premium club of bollywood were not backing him and Mithun remained a small producers star.
Why i said Yash Chopra was the king maker is because he was the premium guy who had associated with Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh and his movies had a reach among family audiences with his social and romantic drama. It was Anil Kapoor bad luck that Lamhe didn't work and he missed out on Chandni. Imagine if Mashaal, Vijay, Chandni and Lamhe all were blockbusters producers would not have to look for new actors with boy next door image, the would have made bigger movies in 90s keeping Anil in mind.
