    Angel Hernandez and the retired Joe West are consistently on everyone’s bad ump bottom 3 list. There are others…. But it’s not just balls and strikes. There have been times when his normal base calls (safe or out) were reversed by video replay…. Multiple times in one game. It wouldn’t be so bad if he was not so stubborn and cocky. The same goes for “Cowboy” Joe West.

    • @intdawg
      @intdawg ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Angel gets talked about more, but if I recall correctly, C. B. Bucknor is statistically the worst umpire in the league. Any time I see Bucknor behind the plate I know I'm about to be angry for the next 3 hours and pray that we just hit home runs because nothing is going to get called correctly. They're both absolutely terrible though.

    • @doomtho42
      @doomtho42 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The thing that kills me about C.B. Bucknor is that he was blessed with one of the coolest names of all-time, and what does he do with it? Completely ruins it. How is it even possible to have a name that awesome but still suck so bad? Like, try to imagine if D’Brickashaw Ferguson had been a terrible O-Lineman - see, you can’t do it. But C.B. Bucknor found a way…

  • @Khaoki
    @Khaoki ปีที่แล้ว +80

    Just for further context, pitchers and hitters will simply adjust if the strike zone is is 'bad' as long as it's consistently called so they know what that particular ump thinks is a ball or strike. What makes Hernandez terrible is that his strike zone is inconsistently bad and what makes him the worst is that he has a massive ego, as evidenced by his lawsuit, so he's more than willing to throw players and coaches out of the game if they argue with him

    • @Roland314
      @Roland314 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This is a great point. His inconsistency makes him so much worse.

    • @timlett99
      @timlett99 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is why the Umpire scorecards are so good. When they show the red shadow or whatever you wanna call it which is theoretically "his strike zone" is absolutely laughable. Ends up looking like that purple Pokemon thats just a gloop lmfao

    • @Enigma1788
      @Enigma1788 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly this. Players will get annoyed, but it's easy enough to adjust if you know one ump tends to have a slightly wider zone (usually referred to as calling/giving strikes east and west) or a slightly taller zone (north and south). There are also cases where if a pitch is right on the line, it might be better to swing as such calls can generally go either way, and sometimes it is better to try swinging as opposed to hoping you get a ball on what is essentially a coin flip. Hell, even fans will look at a borderline call and say "Well, it's annoying, but you got to be ready to swing there."
      Angel is just beyond bad. As you've seen, it isn't just a matter of he gives more north/south or east/west, or that good players are getting screwed by very close calls. Angel just has an absolutely special "talent" for calling shit that's a foot or more off the plate as a strike, or stuff that's right in the zone as a ball. In fact, with most umps you can generally look at their scorecard from previous games and get an idea of how that ump tends to call a game (this guy has a wider zone, this guy calls high strikes, his borderline calls lean towards being balls, etc.). Angel just has zero consistency. As a hitter or pitcher, there is no preparing for a game with Angel. The only real way to survive a game with Angel at home plate is to get the ball into play somehow and hope he's making less bad calls against your own team.
      Hell, you can't even count on him covering 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. He'll call guys that are safe by a mile as out (and vice versa) and essentially waste everyone's time by usually forcing a team mangers to challenge a play early (and sometimes often). The guy can't even get check swing appeals right when he's covering 1st/3rd.
      If there was ever a man that could demonstrate just how much protection a union can give towards people that are completely terrible and incompetent at their job, it is Angel Hernandez. I think it's safe to say that baseball fans everywhere will celebrate when he retires, and nobody will shed a tear when he dies.
      EDIT: Also, it's funny that you mentioned "They should just play this in court" at about 6:20 in the video. That's literally what MLB did! They played a video showing how terrible Angel is at his job!

    Side note: I love the gasp from anticipation of a bad call at 3:55 lmao. When an umpire is so bad you EXPECT the call to be outrageous, there's definitely a problem.
    Angel Hernandez is just...a mystery. Of course, everyone's human, and people make mistakes....but when a person is MORE CONSISTENT getting the call wrong (not just behind the plate, calling if someone is out) than whether a pitch was a ball or strike....they don't deserve to ump in any game.
    It's like watching a ref in footy call penalties on someone who made little to no contact with another player, but then think it's "clean" to kick in another player's knee caps.

  • @domesticdingo1417
    @domesticdingo1417 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Angel Hernandez tried to sue MLB for not letting him on the World Series crew, and in the last world series we had the first umpire perfect game (no inaccurate ball/strike calls) since it started being tracked. Pat Hoberg, who is the guy who called the game, is also relatively young at 36, and Hernandez is 61. Usually it's the younger umpires who are better at calling things correctly, and all the bad ones stick around thanks to union protection

    I know I am really late on this video, but any long time baseball fan has a story of Angel Hernandez being a pretty bad umpire. As a Cubs fan, I remember that he blew a call at home plate in the top of the 7th at Wrigley and gave the visiting team a free run, and an extra out, which turned in to more runs. As is tradition at Wrigley (and most places), they sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", but they had a guest conductor at Wrigley to honor the late Harry Caray, who was famous for his renditions. The guest conductor was a professional wrestler and before he started singing, he said he'd have a few words with the home plate umpire (Angel Hernandez) in the parking lot after the game. After the stretch and going in to the Cubs half of the 7th, they usually interview the guest conductor, but during the commercial, Angel Hernandez ejected the guest singer, and stadium security came to the home broadcast booth to escort him out of Wrigley Field.
    I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before, nor will I ever see anything like it again.

    HOWEVER, I screw up something 11 times, it's not crazy for someone to say ”hey, I see a pattern here, I think you might just be bad at your job."
    I say "no, I don't suck, you are mean for pointing it out."
    That'd be Hernandez in a nutshell.

    I umpired ball for over 25 years starting in Little League and eventually national high school age tournaments. I also did some college baseball. I have to say that all of those pitches just off the plate are usually strikes in amatuer baseball. Otherwise the games would last forever because batters would just leave the bat on their shoulder until ball four.

    Coming from a 2015 graduate of the professional umpire academy in Vero Beach, Florida, all umpires miss a call from time to time due to speed of the game at higher levels. But Angel Hernandez and C.B. Buckner have consistently made bad calls due to their inability to get into proper positions to make the correct call or track balls into the strike zone

Some names like Angel Hernandez, Joe West, Ron Kulpa, C.B. Bucknor, and so on, have a special place in our brains that live on in pure angst towards these guys who just make the wrong calls or did something that an Umpire should not do (like egging on a player, grabbing a player, or making the game about themselves rather than just calling the game).

    This is not to defend Angel Hernandez in any way, he truly is that bad, but to try and give the rest of the umps a break; something to remember is the box you're seeing on screen isn't usually perfectly accurate to the batter's actual strike zone, at least vertically. Horizontally it's mostly trustworthy since Home Plate can't change size but vertically the zone is different for every player

    The thing to know is, this is not typical. MLB umpires in general are very good at their jobs, and they take pride in getting their calls right. Angel Hernandez is just kind of the exception that proves the rule. He's a terrible umpire, especially behind the plate calling balls and strikes. If you want to see the ultimate umpire argument video, check out "Earl Weaver's legendary tirade at Bill Haller [w/optional captions]." It's not a Jomboy video, because no lip reading is required -- the umpire Bill Haller was mic'd up for a documentary film someone was making. Earl Weaver was a manager with a famously explosive temper, and when Haller makes a call against Weaver's pitcher it's pure fireworks.

    Previously on Angle Hernandez.... 8/7//01 I'm a Cubs fan from way back, it is my cross to bare in life. Since you guys went to see the Cubs in London you know the tradition of singing Take me Out To The Ballgame during the 7th Inning Stretch. Steve “Mongo” McMichael (former Chicago Bears football player and WCW wrestler) had the honor on that day. After Angel blew a call earlier in the game, Mongo announced “Don't worry, I'll have some speaks with that home plate umpire after the game.” During the commercial break, Hernandez had McMichael ejected from the press box. Below is the ESPN re-cap of the game. Spoiler Alert! If you watch carefully at the end, Angel even reverses his own call!!!!

    Side note: Joe Girardi, the manager in this video, “Its just so bad Angel” was the batter in the 9th inning on that day in August 2001

    Welcome to the dark side of MLB. Hernandez is not just an embarrassment to MLB umpires, he is an embarrassment to all sports officials at every level around the world. He once had something like three calls (maybe more) overturned at first base in a playoff game. If you were to plug his name into the TH-cam search box you would be bombarded with videos showcasing his absolute incompetence. I used to be an amateur baseball and softball umpire. I worked with more than one umpire who was really bad on more than one occasion. It's absolutely terrifying to work with someone like that.

    I was watching this game with my mom, and as I mentioned in another video, I don1't understand much of baseball, but the whole game seemed so strange that even my mom thought something was wrong, even I could see when it was a ball and he called strike and vice versa. If someone who doesn't undertand everything can clearly see his mistakes, that's proof of him being a bad umpire.

    There's umpires who tend to make themselves the story in games and there's umpires who make bad call after bad call... he's the rare combination of both turned up to ten. He'll make a bad call then throw out someone from the dugout for something a fan said

    You wondered about good umpires. Take a look at this Jomboy video where he talks about an umpire who called a perfect game of the World Series. Basically didn't make a bad call and was very consistent. It's impressive to watch. His name is Pat Hoberg. Ironically the game involved the same Kyle Schwarber and the Philadelphia Phillies.

  • @CosmoNautica22
    @CosmoNautica22 ปีที่แล้ว

    2:32 A lot of those pitches were borderline and could go either way. Most players accept this as part of the game, but what really pisses them off is when the umpire is inconsistent on their strike calls. If an ump has been calling inside pitches strikes all game, then that's fine since the batters can adjust. But, if the ump starts calling the same pitch a ball or strike at random, then both the batters and pitchers are going to start to feel cheated.

    Angel Hernandez is by far one of the worst umpires probably ever to call a game. A lot of people give cowboy Joe west a lot of heat as well, but his last couple years before he retired He actually got a lot better and whenever he called Braves game he was pretty impartial and had about 98% of the calls accurate.

  • @McCallEdwards
    @McCallEdwards ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So a lot of umpires call shit outside the zone but they are consistent with it like you just know if the ump has a larger zone and you just have to deal with it. But angel is really inconsistent with what he calls. He does it all the time he's infamous.

    Weird stuff always happens with Angel Hernandez. He once started a game during a downpour in Pittsburgh and called the players off the field in the first inning after the rain started letting up! Bob Davidson really sucked too. He once threw four people, including a fan, out of a game in Milwaukee! Idk if you guys have soccer refs like this, but he yelled at people and provoked them to yell back so he could throw them out.
