The ammo thing is likely because of the gas system. Poly coated bullets tend to leave a lot of junk behind and that stuff probably goes into the gas port and gas tub and clogs them up
Larger then life Ben Stoeger with poorly pressed tie!!! I would never ever imagine that I would see him in suit and tie. I truly enjoy seeing this larger to life personality to puzzle us again! He frequently plays as if he is bad guy, but this is just to obscure the fact that he is larger then life personality, he is smart like hell and he is very helpful to so many shooters! My respect!
Really fun discussion. The reason why the polymer coated bullets are a "no go", is based on the fact that it is a gas delayed pistol that has a gas port in the barrel and that the polymer coating can build up in the gas port and in the gas piston. This can cause reliability issues but also a very fast and violent slide when the port gets restricted as gas delayed blow back pistols does the opposite than a gas operated system like an AR. Gas delay systems (HK P7, Vektor CP1 and Walther CCP) uses gas to slow down and delay the unlocking and cycling where gas operated (AR 15, AK and Bren 2) uses the gas to unlock and to cycle. That's the only reason why.
I used to be one of those guys that wasn’t very good that used to compete with it. The main issue for me is the gas system gets clogged (especially with plastic tip bullets according to Laugo). I bore scoped the gas chamber and found pitting/erosion directly across the gas port even though I always used FMJ ammo. Fatal flaw. If you don’t shoot it that much should run great.
The gas ports can get fouled with lead if non jacketed projectiles are used. Like a deasert eagle. Also for those that shot in the late 80s people started shootiong the 9x25, they were shooting duplex loads with 90gr projectiles at 2000fps. The issue was shooters getting tennis elbow because of zero rise and total rearward movement. To much of a good thing has repercussions.
The cast and/or coated bullets will mess with the gas system getting shavings in that piston/gas reservoir from some videos a few years back. For highly needed instant replay: 12:55
I think the alien might be too different for anyone with hundreds of thousands of rounds through a Browning action gun to ever get used to. Call it a training scar. Hypothetically, if you could factory reset Ben and give him an array of pistols, I wonder if he would choose an alien starting from zero.
One of the rich dudes at my club has one kitted with all the open gun stuff which while it turns it into a comfortable laser beam, it is crazy that theres that much aftermarket for such an expensive gun.
Hello fellow AF Speedlock enjoyer, ive heard lead is an issue because of excessive fouling of the tube & It's technically not a piston driven system either. So I'm not sure how that would effect their action
@ You had me at speedlock. A friend who has an original alien said the polymer was too thick for the tight tolerances in the barrel but he also said they had plans to change that in future guns. Im not sure that’s accurate so I didn’t mention it originally.
Thanks for reading my comment on the polymer bullets. It blocks the gas port internally. Just doesn’t cycle. In my opinion polymer and tuning the gun to suit your shooting is vital in competition shooting. My Staccato XC is very forgiving. Alien punishes bad trigger pull. Great video.🏆🏆🏆
Wish I hadn’t bought all the other pews and just stayed with my P-10’s (C, C Tactical & F) just need to get the P-10S so I can carry something more compact.
I got a spec'd out Archon Type B Gen 2. The trigger job is on par with an entry level 2011, and has a super short reset. Massive window with my Lead & Steel Pandora red dot, cowitnesses like lower 1/4th with the stock sights It works for everything, carry & competing (if I got a custom spring to lower it down to 3lb pull). All together with optic is still like 25% of the Alien lmfao
I own the Alien, and I love how shooting it feels, and now stuff like 2011s feel slow cycling now, but I don't think it's worth the extra price vs just getting a CZ Shadow 2 or DWX and like $3k in ammo.
the problem with the Alien is that u can not find many accessories of it, there are tons of other platforms that have all the package in the half of the price
I think Gas blowback is more complicated and so it's going to be more expensive, like the HK P7, though I think some of that is cause they discontinued, but they were expensive when they were new too.
You can't use caoted bullets since it blocks up the gas system and then it doesn't function. So it doesn't harm the gun but it will make it very unreliable. So FMJ's only. I didn't know this till an owner of one told me he had issues with his normal competition loads. He had to load FMJ's for it. Needless to say, he doesn't shoot it much anymore.
If it gets as hot as you guys point out, using unjacketed lead bullets would probably cause severe leading in the barrel, and make the shots key hole and be totally unpredictable precision wise. Guess how I know... 😅
I cannot believe he didn't know the Chiappa Rhino. I thought he mentioned in previous videos he played video games? Or am I confusing him with someone else?
I think the price tag is more related to R&D costs than anything else. Yes, it’s well made but there’s nothing about its materials or anything else that would make for a super high price.
You should try an archon type b if you haven't already. Imo its the best of the ErMageRd SecRet lOw reCoiL tEcH guns out there that actually works but at the same time doesnt rely on some funky rube goldberg design like the laugo.
The heat problem makes sense because the Alien's gas system is taken from the HK P7 but with the gas piston on top of the barrel instead of the bottom. In my instructor days I taught a class of 20 people all using the P7M8, even with two pistols for each student and gloves it was miserable in the humid Fayetteville summer, you just can't train well with a pistol that's trying to fry your hand. An interesting thing I discovered about half way thru was that several of the pistols were missing their extractors but they ran just fine without on. People are always looking for a hardware solution for a hard work problem and I think that drives a lot of the interest, the new version straightens up the grip angle a bit but the magazine is still at the old angle which makes fast reloads more challenging.

The fact that we haven’t seen any footage of Ben cookin off with the Alien snorts camel farts.

Expensive guns call for expensive clothes. Surprised it wasn’t a fine silk kimono though now that he is studying the blade.
