Sadly Mike Porcaro the bas-player on most Toto albums passed away yesterday but Toto is otherwise as active as ever. Will go out on tour and their next record is out within days. It's going to be called "Toto XIV" and there is a video out for the song "Orphan". Also the tracks "Holy War" and "Burn" are out for a listen. Have it all a look if you haven't!
actually it makes it easier for me, rather than counting all the way to 17 in 8th notes. also the 7th note seems slightly accented so to me it's natural. count it whatever way you want. in my original comment i should have included " is the best way to count FOR ME" though common sense would dictate that you would already know i was stating my opinion and not a fact :D
No. There are 2 measures of 4 and one measure of 3/16. It NEVER adds up to a full 9 by a 16th note. Or you can see it as 35 16th notes. We made a lengthy, in-depth analysis and transcription of this tune in music school about 16 years ago which included a performance of it.
This song alone made me a fan of Steve Lukather. Simon Phillips drumming is just lights out.
This tune makes me smile everytime I hear it!
same here ))
Philadelphia
My doctor told me I have to listen to this at least once a day...

Simon Phillips. Rock!!!
Still rocking!!
I love Simon's drum sound... Wow!
17/8 people..Then into 4/4..Yes you can subdivide if you want..But Simon said he heard this pattern and played it in 17....
THANK YOU!!! I was trying to figure out if it was an 8 or 9 count for the longest time

On the album cover, Lukather defines it as 17/8.
This has has been a tradition in my school’s HSC with every drummer 😂.
When I was high school student - 20 years ago from now, I listened to this tune and felt so inspired.

Nice
4/4 + 9/8 - two melody patterns.
Easiest way for me to count it is two measures of 4/4 with an extra eighth at the end. Equals 17/8
super duper.....
❣️❣️❣️
yea. i like to see it as 4/4 + 9/8 alternating, though :) a lot easier to keep count
cool!!!!!!
4/4 + 9/8 people
Is it like...17/8?

Simon at his best
Erm... Why not counting a very simple 4/4+9/8, like it is?
well we're really splitting hairs at this point. i'll count it in 4/4 +9/8 rather than 7/8 + 10/8 if it makes you happy :D
Monsters
4/4 + 9/8
+Emanuele La Barbera 4/4 +10/8

Certamente!!!! ;)
Emanuele La Barbera 17/8

Yeah or 4/4 to 9/8. I forced myself thinking 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Made it alot easier hitting the fills
Simon Le Bon?
8/8 then 9/8 ?
+Russel Renz Nerosa I belive so..!
