I don’t know why, but at first glimpse I almost thought they the ladies were dressed in morning clothing. Without looking at the picture, I really like the detail in the white, smocks, his brush work and shading on the pleats is most impressive.
Yes, I should have mentioned in the video (but to be fair to me, I am trying to keep the short ones short) that the father of the woman (the grandfather of Degas & the man in the portrait on the wall) had died and they are in mourning. A detail which just adds to the gloomy atmosphere! Best, Paul.
The Curious Incident of the Missing Mention of a dog - Mea Culpa, mea maxima culpa - I forgot to mention the little dog disappearing out of the bottom right hand side of the painting (as if to escape the imminent family argument).
I remember in my short time in college my Humanities class required us to pick at random from a list of (obviously ynknown to us) composer to study and write an essay about. My pick was Schoenberg. I remember thinking "what on earth...why! would you assault you own senses let alone anyone elses". Music is of course a very personal thing but usually those nuances in taste deal in a wide range of accepted styles, not like picking between mosquitoes buzzing or two pieces of styrofoam rubbing against each other...But then I enjoy Bob Dylan's songs because I love his folky themes and lyrics so I can get used to and appreciate his singing. I suppose rebellion has my respect in almost any context except when it renders an artform joyless or even irritating. Atonal without a cause😂
Hi there, I have the creativity of a brick. These videos are about as creative as I get. I once tried to write a novel because there is supposed to be one in everybody - it was laughably bad! Best, Paul.
@@DrPaulA.Taylor come on now even putting your pen to paper is quite an accomplishment many can’t do that. creativity of a brick? I believe we all have creativity. It just gets bricked in as we age conform to institutionalized learning. The brick starts out as a substance taken from earth moulded and formed. Anyways, I’m excited for your channel. It gives me an excuse to go through a giant box of art books from an art student that was gifted to me last summer.
@@punkrockcountrymom3227 your reply made me think of a medley consisting of 1/2 Pink Floyd and 1/2 Edgar Allan Poe. To your point - I do think genuine artistic creativity is something out on its own. I am good with words, have written academic books etc. but my ideas, pseudo-creative as they might be, are very reliant upon past masters. But we're basically in agreement! Best, Paul.
@@DrPaulA.Taylor 😂 I like Floyd and Poe, except now I’m trying to figure out what music would suit pose’s writing the best death metal or hip-hop, This one could have me pondering for a lifetime lol. Take care good Sir!
@@DrPaulA.Taylor Ok, yeah he mentions this painting, does a short analysis of it, wasn't a bad read, the language was a bit flowery in places, some of the references went over my head, but overall I enjoyed it.
Hello Dr. Paul Taylor, I was wondering if you would be up for a conversation with me on my channel. Speaking about your experience with academia and societal things. Also curious if you plan on doing some live streaming yourself?
Many thanks for the invitation but I am a bit snowed under since the Channel has only just started, maybe in the future when things are more settled. I doubt I’ll be doing any livestreaming of my own because I’m a bit of a technophobe! Very best wishes, Paul.
@@DrPaulA.Taylor Ya I understand that, pretty techtarded myself. Looking forward to your future conversations and glad for your youtube presence. Invitation will always be open sir.

@@DrPaulA.Taylor that definitely explains the forlorn look on the women’s face.

Since you’ve escaped academia, have you indulged in letting out your creative side, do you paint at all or have any creative outlets?

Have you read "La Folie Baudelaire" by Roberto Calasso?
