    it would have been nice to see more of the details of the actual work than a glossing over of the specifics.

    That is incredibly stupid!! At Dana you guys mark the carrier caps on some axles down the centerline with letters like "S", as shown in your video, where as the cap can be rotated 180 degrees and the letter still lines up. Don't use letters like "S, N, H, O, I, Z, X" on axle centerline! when I see this, I always stamp my own letters offset the centerline. The other "That Is Incredibly Stupid" award you win on the JK non-Rubicon 44 rear, is there are no tabs casted onto the carrier caps to keep the side shims from coming out. It is now Standard procedure for us to weld tabs on carrier caps (3/16" X 1/2" long square key stock). Congratulations on winning 2 "That Is Incredibly Stupid" Awards for this axle, I'm going to give you a pass on the "cheesy" plug welds on many of the axles that I have come across ( Jeep JK 44 Rear).

    How can I tell if I have a Dana 60 Rear End?
    I have a 1970 GMC C20 2WD long bed with leaf springs in the rear. It has a 10 Bolt Rear End. It has 12" Drums that just SLIDE off, do not have to remove the Axle to remove the Drums. It looks lie it has 7 bolts attaching the Backing Plate to the Axle Housing. Looking at the Diff cover it has a code written upside-down on the passenger side.. C-30255, and below that it has the number 60. Is it a Dana 60 Rear End?

    How the hell do you set the pinion depth if you do not have any shims to start with? I have watched 3 of these & no one seems to have any information on this subject. Experts??

    How do you identify a Dana 60 Rear End?
    I have a 1970 GMC C20 long bed with leaf springs in the rear. It has a 10 Bolt rear end. It is a Full Floater with 12" Drums. The Drums just SLIDE OFF, the Axles do not need to be removed to take off the Drums. It has 7 bolts attaching the Backing Plate to the Axle Housing. It is 8 Lug with 1/2" x20 Wheel Studs. Looking at the diff cover on the passenger side it has a code written upside-down C-30255, and below that it has the number 60.
    Is this a Dana 60 Rear End?

      Refer to the tag on the differential cover and use the data at:
      www2.dana.com/expertforms/demenu.aspx?prod=AXL
      Most likely it is not a Dana 60.
      Sounds like an Eaton HO52 or HO72. Is the cover round?

      The rear end looks just like the one in this picture with the exact same markings. On the top right hand corner it has C-30255 written upside down and on the bottom right hand corner is has the number 60.

      If your housing looks like the pictures you refer to then it is most likely a Dana 60.
      You may want to get a complete VIN and build plate number decode to determine what differential the vehicle left the factory with.
      Most 1970 GMC C20 long bed with leaf springs left the factory with Eaton differentials with the most common being the HO52 and optionally the HO72.
      Also be mindful casually describing differentials by the number of bolts on the cover such as 10 bolt or 12 bolt without noting you are referring to cover bolts can lead to erroneous identification.
      Example, a 10 bolt cover differential can have a 10 bolt or 12 bolt ring gear/carrier and vice-versa.

    What are the differences between the Dana 44 and the Dana 44 HD with aluminum housing, as in the ones used on grand cherokee zj and wj's?

    • @chuckgilly
      @chuckgilly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Aluminum Dana 44 is a one-off abortion, most likely a "Brain Child" of Mercedes-Benz. You have very limited options for up grades. Ok in stock form.

  • @PhunkBustA
    @PhunkBustA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    so... backlash is just how far the crown is into the pinion?
    i imagine if there were no shims and the crown wheel was too far into the pinion gear then it would want to bind up?

    • @PhunkBustA
      @PhunkBustA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      or is it just the other way, ie.. setting the distance of the pinion gear in relation to the crown wheel? i should go pull a diff apart..

    • @PhunkBustA
      @PhunkBustA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea it has to be pinion in relation to crown right? because if you were messing with the spacing of the crown then the shafts would get thrown out of balance??

    • @PhunkBustA
      @PhunkBustA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      but then theres also probably lateral movement of the crown to worry about??

    • @URMyTorment
      @URMyTorment 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Backlash is how much rotation (the air gap) you have between the pinion and crown wheel and it is not measured at all like it is in the video. Look for another video for how to do it. In short you put the dial indicator plunger onto the crown wheel gear face, lock the pinion so it can't rotate then rock the crown wheel back and forth measuring the total play between the teeth. This measurement is crucial to prevent binding of the gears once under load and under thermal expansion so you are correct.

  • @wildjoe330

    did any of the dana 60's have a out of balance or bad drum that gives it a vibration at 55 to 65 mph.

    • @chuckgilly
      @chuckgilly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are talking about brake drums, Not likely, those are installed by truck manufacturers (Ford, Dodge and GM).Not Dana/Spicer.
      1) Tire and wheel balance are one likely cause, with a vibration frequency of 1 to 1 ratio @ 60 MPH (Tire Rotation)
      2) Drive line balance is another likely cause, with a vibration frequency of approx. 3.5-4.5 to 1 ratio @ 60 MPH (Drive line To Tire rotation)
      Drive line vibration is the worst, if bad enough, it can and will shake the Diff. pinion nut loose, thus causing major damage.

      Clean the mating surface to the drum and check for run out with a dial caliper. Sometimes a wack with a hammer on one side trues it up or knocks the rust off. They don't have the tightest of manufacturing for these.

    Useless video for actually doing it. Good for a quick overview to get a basic understanding i guess tho. Should have shown pinion depth shimming at least instead of just saying you done it with a tool no one actually uses in the real world.

      +Spicer Parts hi, excuse me to disturb you, I have a rear dana 70U on my dodge ram2500 98.5 , I must to change all the seals, I would like to know how many seals are there? I know only the pinion seal, and the wheels , but inside of the dana 70 , are there 2 seals left and right of the case where the bearings are or no? In front I have a dana 60F, and I know there is one seal on the right of the case, near to the bearing.Thank you in advance

      +pelvismc pelvis if you have to order the seals, just look on the parts diagram. There are no internal seals otherwise how would your wheel bearings get oiled?
