So pleased to see Ember. I am also pleased to be able to say that after a 47kg weight loss, I am finally light enough to buy my own Ember.

Totally love how Justine teaches. She makes it very black & white for both the good & bad. Instant praise when doing something right.

We used to have to train the “long leg down into the heel” by being lunged riding without reins with saddle without stirrups. Doing exercises alternating sitting and rising trot. And you finish with your knee naturally turning in right from the groin down with heel down(ish) and your riding trot without stirrups actually becomes a forward and backward movement of your weight on the horses back not the “up and down” movement from pushing against the stirrups. So your legs are still. It also trains you to sit more forward on your “fork” and not on your bum with your legs out front which in turn hugely straightens your back and levels your hips. Great for training rider balance. But I promise you that you will initially find you hurt where you’ve never hurt before. It gives an amazing feeling of truly having the horse fully between your legs so to say !

I use to do a half hour lunge lesson once a month so that I could really focus on my position and not worry about what the horse was doing and that half hour lunge lesson without stirrups helped me the most to get my position in the correct place and then that helped me to get how it was supposed to feel then my balance started to improve. Plus doing no stirrups November really just feel it all coming together. My instructor did a lunge lesson every month and I could work on something different each time to help me a better rider. I think that to many people think that they don't need the lunge lesson when actually it is one of the best way to improve your riding skills. Occasionally I had a group lessons with a top professional and they would also agree that lunge lesson is the best way to improve and learn new skills without worrying about controlling the horse.

Ohhh TY that helped me understand how my understanding of the leg part without the posting part and how I learned to ride, not eventing style but western style, but now I can see how connected they still are even with dissimilar training styles, for obvious reasons, add in that part of my skill set is bareback Native American style which is based on not just the physical connection but also a spiritual connection that, so hard to explain in this format, connects both human and equine body and spirit to learn balance of all body and spirit as one entity, as put to me ... like riding a motorcycle, it's an extension of body but in living equine form, as Sir Cameron stated it,... pushing a wheelbarrow and THAT simply states it all, you push your body where you want the wheelbarrow to go 😄😁😜❤️ so short story long 🙄😆 again, TY for your words!! You clicked that kinda silly but rather vital element I've been missing trying to wrap my brain around understanding WOW eventing!! 🙏🥰

My mum used to train me like this when I was a kid. It really helped my riding. Edit: and will use def this tool again when I'm able to get back to riding

Lucy, I'm 5' 8.5" tall with long legs. I'm old school Dressage and had to train with longer stirrups and ride deep. It was hard at first but became so much more comfortable and gave me great balance. I must confess riding long has got me out of some nasty situations. I did try riding Hunter Style, but my legs cramped up and I was so out of balance.

Lucy put all of your weight down through your heel. The knee become a joint in the middle of a soft leg. The amount of work that your ankle needs to do is the most. Justine just said exactly this! I must learn to wait to comment to the end of the video!!!!

Lovely to see Ember Lucy, he has muscled up beautifully. This was a very good lesson Justine gave you. You are a very good rider so please stop berating yourself it’s just a few tweaks you need to perfect. Ember has taught you a lot too since you bought him and you’ve become a great partnership.tfs🏇

Wonderful Lucy, I thought you looked marvelous riding with a longer leg. You were more synchronized with Amber and you rode more relaxed and so did he, your dressage together will skyrocket.

You look so much better with the stirrups out - fits your long and lean body and makes you not hunch. Nicely done and good to put yourself in a place that may feel novice, but is really well beyond! ❤❤❤

Super session 👍 and Ember is looking fabulous. Riding is all about going back to basics from time to time, it's what makes us better riders, nothing at all to be ashamed of. You can automatically see the difference in Ember the moment your position improved and with that you will have that in your mind from now on of that's how to ride him. Thoroughbreds are so fun to ride and retrain, especially a fiery chestnut lol, and you can really see he tries his absolute best, but with most thoroughbreds unfortunately they do show how your riding them, and you have to know how to ride to get the best out of them. I think you and Ember are fantastic together, and he will help you as much as you help him. Take care until next time

I've been riding for 40 years and this is exactly my bad habit! Resting my leg on and it moving around a lot. So this was great to see and hear advice on thank you.
Other things I've found that trigger it in me personally, is that I tend to lean forward a little naturally. This moves my leg back putting it into more of a contact point. And also I natural push up from my legs/feet to rise, rather than swing my hips forward. Obviously, like you I try to correct these things, but the moment I'm distracted I revert back to normal. It is frustrating.
