  • Join me in Florida and on the return trip home. I finish a 2,200 mile road trip in the amazing road-tripping Ford F150 Lightning with some lessons learned along the way. I, also, provide all of the details on charging during the entire trip.

    I really enjoy your videos Jeff. They are very informative. Your spreadsheet at the end really shows the difference in price.
    Thanks, Lindsay.

    The FPL chargers are fast and quite a bit cheaper. Most folks recommend that FPL stop in Yulee versus Brunswick.

      I was frustrated with the app account setup. I know to setup in advance next time. But with Tesla charger access, the trip would look totally different today. Thanks.

    Francis energy surprisingly enough is also awesome but can plug in charge there because Ford hooked up with them.

    Hey Jeff, I’m somewhat local being from eastern Ky, what has been your winter range in the worst of winter? I travel to Portsmouth Ohio quite often for work and I need it to make 200 miles without charging .. thanks for the content

      Hello neighbor! My experience matches that of Tom Moloughney @stateofcharge where in cold conditions at interstate speeds the Lightning at 100% SOC is pretty reliable for 220 miles. There is a new 40kW DC charger at the IBEW in west Huntington in case you needed a charge. Unfortunately, the Tesla chargers in Huntington aren’t compatible with the Ford and other CCS vehicles open to the Tesla SC network. Hope that helps. Have a good one.

    For a trip like this, perhaps you should have bought one of those aftermarket NACS adapters until your Ford/Tesla one arrives. You can then keep it as a backup.

    • @Chargeonwithjeff
      @Chargeonwithjeff  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I took the trip before Ford opened up to Tesla. I have a Lectron and Ford adapter on order and neither have shipped.

      @@Chargeonwithjeff I see. As far as the adapters, A2Z seems to have been the only one prepared for the onslaught of requests. Many drivers already have theirs in hand.

    I love your channel and sharing the experience as a fellow lighting owner, here is a tip for you, use a BRP which is a better route, planner app, and website. I’m also a bit dumbfounded. It seems like you stop to charge every hour or hour and a half, why not actually run it from 80% down to something like 5 to 8%? Or did you also fill up your gas tank when you hit a quarter or half a tank :). Thanks for the heads up on Circle K huge fan of sheets up here, and heading down to South Carolina in a week or two, nice to know that there are other charging stations within that area besides Electrify America. I still have some free credits with EA.

    • @Chargeonwithjeff
      @Chargeonwithjeff  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you so much. I am not familiar with BRP? Does it precondition the battery? I was following the recommendation of the Apple Maps, which I reference in the video, was far too conservative in mileage estimates. Yes, if I wasn’t testing the Apple map, I would be doing my own calculations and taking charge to single digits. But with Tesla charger access, most of the network at least, route planning is now totally different. I hope to review this soon. Thanks and have a good one.

    • @SlavGuns
      @SlavGuns 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Chargeonwithjeff ABRP is just the route planner. It does not precondition battery or anything. You would plan the route on the app and then put that into the ford navigation.

    I’m picking up a new lightning in St. Alban on Saturday. I’m traveling to northern Virginia. It looks pretty barren until I81. Do you have any advice?

    • @Chargeonwithjeff
      @Chargeonwithjeff  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Congratulations! Maybe take the northern route. An EV connect is in Big Pool, MD. Use plugshate or A Better Route Planner app or both. I have started using ABRP. It is good. Just plug in the chargers as your destination on the Ford route planner. Have a great trip and enjoy the Lightning.

  • @keanen_wold
    @keanen_wold 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    You said at the premium mall you had set the destination in the Ford software and it preconditioned the battery. Have you found a way to use Apple Maps while preconditioning?

    • @Chargeonwithjeff
      @Chargeonwithjeff  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hello Keanen. I set the charger destination for nearly all stops with Apple maps. Since the charging curves were nearly identical with peaks around 170kW, even in cold temps, I believe Apple Maps was preconditioning the battery. I will confirm with a dongle next time. Thanks for watching and the question.

      @@ChargeonwithjeffAlso, it will be really interesting to see if Apple Maps learns as it goes instead of being so conservative. I do not have the update to support Apple Maps yet so that's why I am so curious.

      @@keanen_wold I agree. That is one reason I wanted to test it the entire trip. It didn’t seem to get any more liberal. My Lightning software has been updated to the Tesla network. I'm currently in my 4th Tesla. I am definitely a Tesla fan boy. But I do like the Lighting. I drove a Lighting home for the night last night. I didn't love it but I like it. My concern is charging the Lighting when traveling. I see in this video you only stopped at a Tesla Supercharger a couple of times. I thought that with Tesla opening up their chargers to the Lighting, you would have charges primarily at those. Is there a reason you didn't, or is it because the Lighting can only charge at certain Tesla chargers? Because Tesla's charging network is one of the reasons I have stayed with the brand. The network has never let me down.

    • @Chargeonwithjeff
