this is one of those beats that's just so simple yet so perfect, like it doesn't do anything more than it has to do. it has a super unique draw to it (the pitch bend) that makes it stand out but stays simple enough to let the artist have room to do something special and memorable with it

I think what tremendously helped was that X wasn’t afraid to test things out which is exceedingly difficult to do, because experimental never did a lot for most artists and they would try too hard. But for X - for some reason or the other - he just had a switch to flip on a beat. I’m not saying it was consciously nor was it planned, but he just had the _it_ factor to make it work for his generation. It’s not unheard of for artists to do, but still.
