I couldn't wait to hear more from Mama Drawk so lately I've been watching your Twitch streams, although I've never been able to catch the stream lol I just know Mama and I would be great friends and I wish I could meet her so we could cry together!! And I'm so excited to hear from someone who is older and knows so much about history and mythology and is capable of making these amazing references! I'm currently watching Impel Down's stream and it makes me happy, because as you mentioned, you're sharing the thoughts on this hidden and valuable messages and references Oda makes and I discover things I wasn't able to do by myself thanks to Mama Drawk :) One Piece has never been only a manga about pirates who fight. Usopp is also the person who personally fired the "gun" declaring war against the world government so I think that plays a part in his bounty being higher than Nami.
20:14 I think the best example for this is, Nico Robin's devil fruit - the Hana-Hana no mi ( the flower fruit) doesn't give its user flower powers but it uses the concept of Flourishing to bloom body parts.
More and more I'm starting to think that devil fruits work however the user thinks they should work and imagination/freedom of thought is the key to unlocking the full power of a "devil." I'm almost but not quite to the point of arguing any devil fruit could have or even could still become Nika if the user had/has enough willpower and imagination, but there isn't quite enough evidence for me to go whole hog on that one.

I sincerely believe Nico Robin's name is not inspired by the bird at all. It is inspired by the _Robin tree._ Not only is Oda known for using plants/flowers to name female characters, this tree is shallow rooted. Robin, as a character, has had to live with shallow roots -- a person able to up and leave very quickly.

I wanna know why Oda chose the name "Merry" specifically. Cuz to me I hear merry as in happy. So when we got the Sunny, my brain was like hmmmm. Just the transition from happy to sunny made my brain do cartwheels. The way I see it is like "going happily into the dawn." Which is very fitting.
The thing about "erasing your memory to read One Piece again" is that...somehow, the second readthrough might be even better than the first anyway because of all the additional context and knowledge!
I have this belief that people who swore to love One Piece a lot are the people who read it atleast twice. The experience on the second read-through is actually better imo.
As a kid I read Garp tying balloons to Luffy incorrectly as him tying Luffy into a ballon and letting him float away. With his rubber powers it made sense to me and it’s a funnier picture, but definitely put an extra child abuse point on Garp.

My read was weather powers for Dragon, too, because in Japanese myth dragons have the power to bring rain and storms, so it just seemed like an obvious power to give a guy with that name.
4:25 Unrelated to One Piece but it physically hurt me to read the chat message "There's iron in blood so technically he'd make you suffocate". The iron in hemoglobin "rusting" (oxidizing) is literally how it picks up oxygen in your lungs to then carry throughout your body, most of why you need to breath is getting rid of CO2 not actually picking up oxygen so all he'd really do is make your or his own breathing slightly easier. I'm a One Piece nerd and a science nerd equally, thank you for coming to my TED talk.

They said I was a match stick who grew into a giant 😅

People really glaze over crosses, but (mostly because of Mihawk's fit) I feel like they hold some actual spiritual value in this world. . . . Spoilers: The huge one at Mihawk's house is also suspicious
Oda uses crosses for Mihawk and Kuma because they are both vampire-like characters and Japan likes to associate crosses with vampires. Christianity isn't a big thing there so most people are more often exposed to cross imagery in popular culture like vampire and horror movies. hence why usopp uses crosses on thriller bark.
@@CrunchRosey yes as i said japan associates christianity with vampire movies because it is often their first or one of few experiences with it. im not saying there is no other meaning to it and as we see it is further explained that Kuma is the son of a pastor, and the cross imagery takes on another meaning. But Kuma's initial design was based off that vampire/old time christian aesthetic that is popular in media. which explains why kuma's first full reveal was at thiller bark and Mihawk's island is also very horror movie esque.

Koby not needing glasses anymore can also be explained by having a better diet and taking care of his body. Eating properly and building muscle can strengthen the blood vessels in your eyes and improve your eyesight.

1:00:30 Robin's moves aren't in French, they are in English or later on some in Spanish (plus the number of limbs she sprouts is always in Spanish). The only thing she says in French is "Fleur" (flower). Clutch, Slap, Grab, Twist, the one that she'll bust in the next arc for the first time, all English. "[Number in Spanish] Fleur" is like Luffy's "Gomu Gomu no", the move is what comes after.

Probably not gonna be seen but whatever, here's the Yon vs. Shi explanation: The original word for 4 was Shi. Because it sounds similar to the word for death, 4 basically became the Japanese equivalent of 13 in western culture, to the point where many buildings skip the 4th floor in elevators, and some people will avoid moving into a house if there are too many 4s in the address. Eventually, people started getting paranoid about saying the number out loud altogether, so it was decided the number should just be renamed to Yon to alleviate the problem. Currently, basically everyone in Japan uses Yon for 4, but are aware that Shi is the archaic term for the number.

Feels like a revolutionary movie. I think when saul dipped with dragon guys like aokiji and smoker were left behind as part of the plan
I can’t imagine getting mad or annoyed about her getting predictions wrong. If anything, it’s absolutely insane the sheer amount she gets RIGHT. One piece is definitely not an easy series to make predictions for.

The observation about the month of March with the Going Merry and the Thousand Sunny ("in like a lion, out like a lamb," but reversed) is notable and there's probably something to that, but I think some Biblical symbolism may be present as well. There isn't one single Bible verse that refers to this all at once, but in various verses, Christ is compared to a lamb in the past/(then) present and a lion in the future; basically, according to the Bible, Christ came as a lamb but will return as a lion. This kind of imagery may be relevant to Luffy as a sun god

Shockingly, the anime is pretty good w French word pronunciation- although a certain henchman character's use of words at the ends of his sentences later sours up a sweet arc and had my eye twitching angrily the whole time.

Oda uses crosses for Mihawk and Kuma because they are both vampire-like characters and Japan likes to associate crosses with vampires. Christianity isn't a big thing there so most people are more often exposed to cross imagery in popular culture like vampire and horror movies. hence why usopp uses crosses on thriller bark.

@@CrunchRosey yes as i said japan associates christianity with vampire movies because it is often their first or one of few experiences with it. im not saying there is no other meaning to it and as we see it is further explained that Kuma is the son of a pastor, and the cross imagery takes on another meaning. But Kuma's initial design was based off that vampire/old time christian aesthetic that is popular in media. which explains why kuma's first full reveal was at thiller bark and Mihawk's island is also very horror movie esque.

1:00:30 Robin's moves aren't in French, they are in English or later on some in Spanish (plus the number of limbs she sprouts is always in Spanish). The only thing she says in French is "Fleur" (flower). Clutch, Slap, Grab, Twist, the one that she'll bust in the next arc for the first time, all English. "[Number in Spanish] Fleur" is like Luffy's "Gomu Gomu no", the move is what comes after.

The original word for 4 was Shi. Because it sounds similar to the word for death, 4 basically became the Japanese equivalent of 13 in western culture, to the point where many buildings skip the 4th floor in elevators, and some people will avoid moving into a house if there are too many 4s in the address. Eventually, people started getting paranoid about saying the number out loud altogether, so it was decided the number should just be renamed to Yon to alleviate the problem.
Currently, basically everyone in Japan uses Yon for 4, but are aware that Shi is the archaic term for the number.
