The crank rod for this bike was discontinued. I found the last one for sale in the U.S. and then had it professionally rebuilt which took more than 2 weeks. That's why this bike took so long to rebuild. Sorry for the long wait on this one! Hopefully you guys enjoy the video!
As I said before, these little bikes are especially interesting because I had some good times with my son on one. Best decision I ever made. That was many years ago when parts were plentiful. Shame about your parts problems with this one. Thanks again for your time today and enjoy your weekend.
Had a flashback when you turned into the drive at the end of the test ride coming off the road. I was about 11 at the time and did pretty much the same thing on my 1978 YZ 80 and lost the front end on the blacktop driveway with fresh sealer on it. Good lesson about knobbies on slick surfaces.
3:00 I'd really recommend buying a seal puller. They are dirt cheap and you would have had that seal out in seconds without risking damage to the casing mating surfaces. They work good on fork seals too, not just in casings.

This is awesome. Back in the day, I had an '84 YZ 80. Very similar to yours, but colors were yellow and black that year. Seeing this brings back some great memories. Nice job on getting this bike back to running. Thanks for posting.
I used to own a 1988 yz80 and that thing was a blast especially when the powerband kicked in. I hated to get rid of it but hopefully I'll be able to find another just to play around on.
I had one of these 1985 yz 80s back in the day. Definitely a riper. I actually added a tooth on the front sprocket over stock because it had enough power to easily handle the taller ratio
This was the first dirtbike i ever got to see close up when I was a kid. They really do rip for an 80! Remember that movie Dirtbike kid? The kid from A Christmas Story gets a Yamaha another kid throws away. puts lights on it, fixes it up and it comes to life lol
@@lorollinls yes they will! I took my Yamaha Warrior, the LT 80 and and one of my best friends up to the farm a couple years ago. He is 6'2" tall, and the image of him on that little quad reminds me of Artie Johnson, on Laugh In, on that tricycle. He was flying across the property, hitting burms and flying through the air, his knees almost in his face, screaming like a little girl. I'd give anything now to have had a video of that. Just remembering it has me in the floor in stitches.
I had a buddy get that bike, brand new in 85. It was cherry, and he took care of it. He joined the navy, went to fight for Cheney oil in the middle east..not sure if he made it back, but the elite mans oil is secure....
I would like to have an old 80 yz but that last connecting rod and no cranks really puts me off. Being old it might last the rest of my days but would be fun. Looked like over 70 on the highway and more than 60 down the field, enough to bust your butt real good. It needed the rear suspension hardened up for your weight.
Quick tip for putting in cranks or really anything with bearings or important parts like that. When you freeze them put some WD40 on the bearings etc so when the part unthaws the condensation doesn’t cause rust. Love the vids keep up the good work🤍
That's a good idea! Not being a smart ass but the word you want is just - thaw. The "un" is unnecessary. My wife says unthaw all the time and it makes me laugh
Clutch is definitely slipping from 3rd gear on. Might want to tighten it up before you have to put a new clutch in it lol. Otherwise great video! If parts were more available I would def. Consider buying an old yz80. Might have to get me the yz85 since parts are more available. Such fun bikes! Keep up the awesome content bro!
Well done on your rebuild. You mentioned your front sprocket was worn there's a chance it is not your clutch plates your front sprocket could be just spinning/sleeping
I have a 2000 yz80 and a 2006 yz85. I already rebuilt the whole motor for the 85 and the frame is getting powder coated. The yz80 I cleaned up and replaced plastics. This is my son's beater bike while we are rebuilding the 85. Some parts are even a pain to get for the 2000
In 1999, I bought a brand new kx 80, I was 17, my little buddy got 1 of these to ride with me. The sound of that 3ngine brings back alot of memories. My 99 kx 80 was smooth and fast, but the Yz 80 was nasty! The power band kicks in so fast, it felt so weird after riding the 99 kx. Which was a little faster on top end I thi k I got the kx 80 to go about 60mph if I remember correctly. Cool video, thanks for Sharing!
Keep doing what you're doing man. Keep learning and bringing these older machines back to life. Love to see it. You remind me of myself and my good friend. We ran a shop a long while back (90s through 00s) and I've had the pleasure of working on about 99% of the bikes you've done on your channel... and many others. Watching your vids brings back great memories. I still wrench and ride, but the wrenching part is only maintenance now on the few machines I own... and I guess vicariously through channels like yours.
I really enjoy watching you work on the engines of these machines . I build vintage scooters up , but the engines are beyond me . I'm learning gradually . Thanks so much .
It is like you are riding your first 2 stroke. I've ridden a lot (75-100) of 2 stroke bikes both on and off road and the YZ80 was close to the most impressive for powerband. The Maico 490 was also a scary ass arm jerker on powerband but the Yamaha V4 RZV500R is just completely insane and wants to rip your hands off the hand grips.
The TZ750 will give you a similar feeling lol. I got the chance to race one in road race trim at Summit Point. Wish I had one today. Always have loved 2 strokes.
Hey man this yz80 brings back memories i used to have one but got stolen off me they are one of the coolest dirt bikes hey have that unique sound, really enjoy watching the rebuilds, have you got plans for any inline 4 vintage rebuilds or tunes?
Our son had an 88 back in the day. Never had to do anything to it. Many trophies. It was very loud as well. Probably infuriated the neighbors haha. Great vid.
Sounds like clutch slipping from 3rd and up. Great video anyways. Epoxi is a risky decision for such an important role and the original cause that killed the engine. It will tend to fail over time. A mechanical interference solution would be better. Keep up the 2t resurrection!
This is the perfect candidate for a nice build joe! Ide like to see a fmf fatty or even a gold series. Maybe some vforce 3 reeds, a little port and polish work. Maybe a 100cc kit. Oh yeah
I had that exact bike as a kid. It sounds like your clutch is slipping, fix that up and it will pull harder. Also that exhaust leak where the pipe meets the head was a common problem, I can see yours leaking from the smoke when you were in the garage, that will take a little power away too. There were some copper crush gaskets that would seal that up for a while but they will eventually wear through, and I'm not sure where you would buy them these days. High temp sealant might work for a while.
The first dirtbike I was on was a 1986 YZ80 yellow and black one. it scared the crap out of me it was so fast! once that power band kicked in.. might have been an 85.. i can't hardly remember? i was 11, and I'm like almost 40 now.. time fly's! and I also had an 84 too with the metal gas tank.. it was gave to me.. and just needed a carburetor. never could get it running.. and gave it back to my friends for parts.. for the other yellow and black one.
You see how people treated each other back then.. that's true friendship. we just gave each other stuff! it wasn't ever about money... it was about the fun of having a dirtbike. and especially to keep one running! lol
I always use gasket maker or case sealant on the intake gaskets on both sides on all 2 strokes, because with out it, it will leak cause it to run lean.. or leaner than you thought. If you leak down test the motor it will tell you if your intake, cases, cylinder to cases, and head are leaking/ not holding the pressure it needs to lube bottom of the crank case
Get yourself a seal puller, makes that job MUCH easier. Also, it kills me that you don't clean up those parts before putting new parts in. I would be worried about dirt getting into the new parts. It is just so much nicer to work with clean parts. Put that case in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes and that frozen bearing will fall into place.
You need to invest in a seal puller..you do enough to make it worth it...def one of my fav channels..you put out more content than just about anyone... Love it

Just wanna say great rebuild and restoration.
