Come to Delhi. The freebies have been going on for years and the budget is surplus. Congress needs to do what Kejriwal did if they’re going to copy his guarantees sustainably: eliminate waste and corruption.
@@Brick2 there can't be an comparison of a state to others, Delhi can't take much loan on its own, it can take only through centre, Delhi's budget have been surplus before also, now also it isn't surplus every year, and there's just two subsidy schemes in Delhi, in Karnataka it will be five, and that also they will implemented in just 3 months, whereas in Punjab they have just fulfilled one promise, there's nothing copy, cong have been party who have brought diff type of subsidies, it's an extension
The public money looted by nirav, lalit MODI, choksi, malya is much more than subsidy .Also monopoly of ADANI in Karnataka by acquiring Mangaluru airport, Udupi thermal plant,Mangalore sea port ,CNG gas pipe lines and Bengaluru aiport in offering supported by Modi and Shah will make people slaves.
Many comments seem to assume that freebies are universally bad. Freebies like this scheme (free bus for women) is an enabler scheme and it ought to be lauded. Public transport is an enabler, and many governments enable it. In Mumbai the bus fares were reduced drastically a few years back and this enabled a lot of common people (fares for a distance of 5km used to be Rs.15, which was dropped to Rs.5 for normal bus and Rs.6 for AC buses). Mumbai's local trains are super inexpensive to travel and is a definite enabler for the working class people and small businesses. So all the pundits who are claiming a disaster for a free public transport system (or at least subsidized) must re-think carefully. For a different objective altogether (pollution and traffic congestion related) several European cities have free public transport as well. This is a good move by the Karnataka government.
Hard disagree over pollution and congestion. Even without free bus travel, people were still preferring to ride ksrtc and bmtc over private vehicles as it was cheap. Now, middle class will think twice before boarding these buses as it will be crowded and chaotic and will prefer private vehicles Also bmtc is in major loss, how can it afford to give free rides? Who will pay for the diesel? Ksrtc is barely profitable, if this continues ksrtc and bmtc will have sell their bus depots and luxury buses.
So the free travel scheme eroded crores from the exchequer and took away private bus operators' livelihoods. Doesn't sound like "free" to me. It makes sense to help those who cannot economically afford it, but it doesn't make sense to loot the state and its private businesses. Karnataka could lose its competitive edge due to this spreading in other areas.
Sometimes these things happen for good . The attitude and irresponsible driving of these buses with loud music . Good lesson to be grounded. Dangerous drivers
4000 cr is half a billion dollars. If the govt would have spent that amount towards modernisation of infra it would have been great. Now forget modern buses and good roads it will plunder ksrtc even furthermore into debts

I have no sympathy for private bus operators of Bangalore, who are rude, unprofessional bunch but have to empathise with anyone who will loose jobs and income that sustain their families.
There should be strict ethics rules around public spending, especially as part of election promises. We need leaders not demagogues. Governments should focus on being lean and efficient - just like any private enterprise.
Excellent initiative , if Congress gets elected to centre I hope they will make Indian railways across the country free for women only then women will have true freedom to relocate and work anywhere
That's all then the entire passenger train segment will get abandoned after some years and that would lead to closure of many Railway lines due to losses 📉
Karnataka transport workers are all alike, be its autodrivers or bus driver/conductors. At every new decision/policy which benefits the public but not them they will ask the government to bend over backwards for them, be it auto drivers asking government to ban rapido bikes, or bus drivers asking government to not let ladies travel for free. How does a private venture even tell government what it can do or not. Also, the reason government amenities exist is to help the poor and needy, and providing free or cheap bus rides is one of them, that is the reason people pay taxes. If a private entity wants to co-live in the industry they need not compete with the government scheme but rather complement it and go hand in hand, if poor classes benefit the most from not paying 100-150Rs ticket, then the ones who can still afford to pay that amount (or even more) is the affluent classes, the buses can easily move from daily commute to luxury commute and charge twice as much by giving more amenities and comfort in the bus. If a person who is of means is given option of travelling in government bus at 50-100% off or in a private bus at full rate but with way more amenities and improved quality of live, they will almost always choose the latter. Also this will ensure that government buses are more affordable but also overcrowded, while simultaneously making the private buses undercrowded. Anyone who can afford it will choose private bus for the comfort of not being overcrowded any day. The people of karnataka have this rampant mentality of never wanting to improve and adapt to new scenarios, they want things to remain same as it was, but nothing remains same with time, and we have to learn to adapt to new times.

Excellent initiative , if Congress gets elected to centre I hope they will make Indian railways across the country free for women only then women will have true freedom to relocate and work anywhere

It's very good. My sisters were harassed by these private bus conductor many times. They always felt safe in govt busses
Can understand your agony, but this isn’t a answer or solution for it. Giving freebies will effect the public only at the eod
