- A senior Labour politician has been criticised for laughing at Nick Ferrari's line of questioning about their workers' policy.
Laura Pidcock spoke to LBC to discuss Labour's plan to expand workers’ rights, reiterating their plan to ban zero-hours contracts and introduce a £10 minimum wage for all employees.
In announcing their Workers' Manifesto, Jeremy Corbyn called out what he called the UK’s five worst employers - Amazon, Uber, Asda, Sports Direct and outsourcing company ISS.
But things started to get fiery on LBC when Nick put to her the possibility that forcing employers to pay almost 25% more could well lead to job losses.
Ms Pidcock, the Shadow Secretary for Workers' Rights, laughed when he asked his question.
That led to Nick asking: "Why is it funny? People's jobs might be on the line. I don't see why that's funny."

Carl, that's beside the point. The truth is that what she is saying is right. All the evidence from around the world as well as the UK, is that a higher minimum wage creates more jobs. That's because the people who get it spend all their money every month, and that increases sales and the number of people needed to service those sales.
Replevideo I’m not sure that is entirely true, because although sales may increase, shops may then also increase the price of their goods, due to the high level of demand. Also, with an increased minimum wage, this could damage many small businesses and force them to let go off staff. I understand your point, but there’s no guarantee that what you have said will happen, which is why many people like myself would oppose increasing minimum wage

She was a labour party MP, an MP is a senior position.
When you look at the standard of the people in the Labour party it is easy to understand. When their minister for education has no qualifications from school , that should answer your question.

Businesses would have to (a) reduce their workforce to afford to pay the workers more (and increase their hours), (b) reduce the profit for shareholders, which would see them investing elsewhere, whichwould lead to a collapse,(c) increase the price of their goods and services, which would mean customers go elsewhere. If people want to earn more, they just need to upskill via volunteering or online courses, so that they can find better work.

Pay reflects your skill, paying non skilled workers the same as skilled workers is not only not doable, but is also just another tax grab by the government. the more you earn the more tax and NI you pay.
If this was implemented, what would happen is, businesses would loose as many workers as needed to run at their desired profit margin, then incentivise the workers it kept by paying them more to cover the extra workload, this is cheaper than keeping the lower paid employees, In essence, this would increase unemployment and widen the pay gap.
It's simple economics, let businesses drive wage growth, not megalomaniac politicians handing out sweets to get a vote.

Pidcock lost her seat at the 2019 general election. Her successor, Richard Holden apologised for unseating her during his acceptance speech, but said she "represented a branch of the Labour Party that wasn't mainstream". It was the first time the seat had not returned a Labour MP since its creation in 1950.
Because Holden knows the damage tory governments do to the north.

She laughed at his line of questioning because it was laughable. Setting a minimum wage is not "telling people how to run their business". You don't need to have run a business to understand that employers should pay a living wage to their employees. All businesses are able to run exactly as they wish to within the law.
Actually, setting a minimum wage IS telling a business owner how to run their business, because labor is the biggest chunk of a company's operating costs, unless it's in production or manufacturing and materials costs have to be taken into account. Raising the minimum wage means that the chunk of the costs grows bigger, and in an economy where businesses are struggling due to politicians mismanagement of the economy, that chunk could be enough to sink the entire company, and then everyone's out of a job.
Businesses are under enormous pressure to comply with all manner of regulations and stipulations that only make sense in a government office and are really counterproductive and often irrelevant to the facts on the ground. That mostly applies to small businesses, because the big ones can afford to offset things more easily, but the bigger they are, the less they're allowed to fail, so if Tesco were to go belly up, chances are the government would have to bail them out, which means the taxpayer would be bailing them out, same as all the big corporations were bailed out in the crashes of 2008.
Why do you think that every business that could has invested into automation? It's because every employee they don't have to pay minimum wage to is technically a sound investment, because now all you have to deal with is the sunk cost of installing it, and the operating/maintaining costs. It's already a proven fact beyond question that every state in the US that voted to substantially raise the minimum wage has also seen more unemployment due to automation and positions being phased out. I guess that means the people that manage to keep their jobs are okay, but it's small comfort to those who are laid off.

@@streamsofconsciousness8651 Not every job can or is even intended to provide a living wage. It's NEVER worked that way, period; and if it did the entire financial/economic system would collapse.
Minimum wage jobs are typically jobs that are very low skilled, and thus the market prices the value of that labor the least, hence the fact that it pays the least the law will allow. It's never been the case that a person is meant to buoy themselves financially for life off of such a job; the only time such work paid well enough to get by on was back when women weren't part of the workforce in significant numbers and thus labor across the board was more valuable.
Minimum wage jobs are primarily meant to be filled by young workers who are just starting in the labor market, and use the money to help fund their higher education in order to acquire the skills they can then parley into the jobs that actually DO pay them a living wage. Minimum wage jobs are like the training wheels on a bike; the whole point is that once you've figured out how to ride, you take them off and move on.

Yes, I realise that businesses have, for a very long time, existed on the back of labour exploitation by failing to pay a living wage. That doesn’t mean that it’s a reasonable way of doing business, or that it should continue that way and cannot be changed. The old cliche that minimum wage jobs are for young people to get a step on the employment ladder is as tired as I am of hearing it. Minimum wage jobs exist throughout society and at all age levels and are often essential jobs that are just undervalued. Yes, they should be paid a living wage too.
And now we have hardly any manned isles in major supermarkets. Macdonald's in the US now has no serving staff in many restaurants.
When you raise the price of something (in this case the cost of labour) it reduces demand.
Minimum wage hurts the poorest, the low skilled, the young and the disabled hardest of all.

@@End-Result higher wages (in the respect we are discussing them) do not lead to a higher level of disposable income. Every extra penny paid goes onto the price of goods (and by more than just the wage increase, an employer's national insurance costs also rise for example). It just increases the poverty threshold. It is a zero sum game that appeals to the inept and those trapped in poverty.
This is precisely why tax credits and minimum wage have done nothing to reduce poverty.

In terms of profit margin, 2.08 bn on sales of 56.9 is 3.1%. That's what they are making on sales.

If you can't afford to pay your staff a wage they can live on, you don't deserve to be in business, period.
I don't support Labour at all but at the same time there are far too many businesses relying on their staff claiming tax credits and housing benefits to subsidise poor wages. This is unacceptable as no working person should require benefits unless disabled or unable to work a normal week.

Imagine working for 40 hours and taking home less than £200, and then finding that your rent (due to the tories policies) is £175 and you can't afford heating and food, so you have to choose.

Yes and also bear in mind that the whole system of tax credits is not only an admission that wages are too low but also they are essentially a form of taxpayers subsidising employer wages. I certainly agree with you but something does need to change there.

I started a job in payroll in 2012 and the minimum wage was £5.08 per hour. It is now £8.21 if I heard correctly. That's a 60% increase (ish) in the last 8 years. I don't call that years and years of stagnation.

James McNeil I will never vote for this Labour government, especially for this awfully led version of it. But people will vote for this Labour Party because they’re promising so much for free. Free broadband, free this and free that. They’re trying to bribe people for votes and if Labour win this election all the promises will never be delivered. but yet the conservatives will end up being blame for it.
I think its because they are taken in by the illusion of having everything for free from labour expecting everyone else to work and give them money so that they can continue to wallow in self pity on the dole or on low wages

Well done Nick. I run a small rural business. I have earned less than ALL my staff every year and I am not alone. It is NOT hilarious. I have just let jobs go. I am struggling to pay ever increasing government ransoms aka unaffordable taxes on small struggling businesses. Maybe one of these naive politicians could spend a while in a rural area looking at the reality of businesses which are not Tesco and will be bankrupted by their uninformed twattery. And where, as I am, they are the only employer in the village, how exactly does that help anyone???? Unlike the a Westminster troughers, we are part of a supportive community where we help in many ways which don't involve money we don't have. Which will all disappear as we get taxed out of existence to support the idealistic elite who don't have a clue because as Nick rightly says, you haven't been there, done that, or,apparently, even bothered to try

Automation is going to happen in several areas, but interestingly when Sainsburys recently tried to go one further and have a totally till-less shop, the technology didn't work properly and people preferred to use human cashiers.
