    I wasn't saying that I disliked Anne Hathaway's version of Emma but I think the Emma that we get in the TV show is very different than the Emma in the movie. I just don't think Anne Hathaway could have played a believable version of the TV Emma.
    I think it's a different kind of confidence. Like Ambika Mod's Emma stays confident in herself not to just sit and wait for Dexter but does give looks of pining for him. It's very subtle through out. I just not sure those same looks would come across as subtly with Anne Hathaway. I think with Anne Hathaway giving those same looks, I would be frustrated in Dexter for not recognizing them.
    The movie Emma just feel like she is happy with them both friend zoning each other. The TV Emma is being friend zoned by Dexter and she really doesn't know what to do. Ambika Mod plays that very well. Like I've seen some people say they don't have chemistry in the beginning which I think is intentional. TV Emma just doesn't know how to get Dexter's attention and I think that something you couldn't get a believable version of from Anne Hathaway. So much of Anne Hathaways acting is those looks or her smile to get your attention. I think they had to make movie Emma more quiet and completely hiding her feelings toward him, otherwise it wouldn't have been believable.

    Yep, 100% agree with all of those statements. They’re very different takes on the same character and I don’t think either actress could have effectively portrayed the other version.
    I personally found the TV Emma to be more relatable / believable / stronger, but they both worked in the context of their medium I think.

    I actually agree! The film did certain moments better, with more power, like Ian’s final conversation with Dexter, or Em and Dex’s fight in the street. But I also enjoyed the slower burn of the tv show. Honestly both adaptations did a great job with the story.

    I've really been enjoying Katherine Center books lately!
    The Lost Husband
    The Bodyguard
    Hello Stranger (I want to re-read and buy this book!)
    Happiness for Beginners (also a Netflix movie)
    Everyone is Beautiful (I like that this is a romance story of a couple that is already married and are just in the midst of raising young children, managing careers, and moving for one partner's work while trying to keep ahold of their own identities.)

    The movie and the tv show have such a different feel to them despite each big moment of each day having almost the exact same lines.
    Dexter in the TV show is so much more charming and likable. Emma in the TV show seem like a more relatable person in general. Like Emma in the TV show is someone you can see yourself in. Dexter in the TV show is the crush you have or had.
    In the movie, Emma and Dexter seem more on the same level and even though she says she had a crush on him when they were at university, you don't really see those little moments in the movie until the end. Emma in the TV show seems to be waiting for Dexter while in the movie it really doesn't feel that way.
    The TV show also does a great job of flipping it when Dexter profess his love for Emma in Paris and she leaves. I think you really feel like Emma and Dexter both then realize they are the love of each other lives. I'm not sure that really happens in the movie, even Dexter says to his daughter that Emma was his best friend at the end. It just feels in the movie they realize they are right for each other but it doesn't feel as invested as the TV show does. The ending of the TV show seems so much more emotional because you seem to really feel that loss with Dexter.

    I will never understand why there’s an aversion to adapting what’s popular right now. People want romance but they just aren’t delivering 😭

    Amazon Prime has some good originals. I think Colleen Hoover and Ali Hazelwood have deals in place as well, but I also argue that there are some fantastic romance books that didn't hit mainstream that'd make excellend movies.

    I read the book back when it came out so I fully knew how the mini series would end. However, I did not expect to find myself rooting against this couple the entire time. It's such a product of the manic pixie dream girl era where FMCs only exist to serve the MMC's character arc. I literally said "this had to be written by a man" out loud at least once per episode.
    Maybe I can interest you in a Netflix book adaptation that does have an HEA!
    The Lost Husband based on {The Lost Husband by Kathryn Center}
    A Perfect Story based on {Un Cuento Perfecto by Elizabet Benavent} in Spanish but with English subtitles and dubbing.
    Along for the Ride based on {Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen}
    Love & Gelato based on {Love and Gelato by Jane Evans Welch}
    These are not based on books but have serious romance HEA vibes
    Holidate
    Plus One
    Out of my League (Italian but with English dubbing and subtitles)

    I don't really remember the original movie but out of curiosity I watched a clip, and I'm not really surprised if I watched and forgot, it wasn't really anything great... And tbh, I'm very critical of screen adaptations since I find them to take too many liberties and can become a bit cringe, so I don't often watch them. That's why I find it so tragic that something that was (imo) so well done ended up being based on a story with such a sad ending! And yeah, def don't promote this series as romance...

    Interesting! I actually found the movie Dexter to be more likeable than the TV version. Perhaps because we got to see his full journey to rock bottom before picking himself up again, I felt like we saw more of his bad behaviours on TV, so his movie version felt more “forgivable”.
    Emma on TV definitely came across as more confident to me, not someone that would be sitting around, pining after Dex. She definitely felt relatable. However I really enjoyed Anne Hathaway’s very different take on the character too.

    I read the book and watched the movie and really have no interest either. Though at the time I did love the concept but now it doesn't feel as novel.

    It honestly blows my mind that rather than adapting a popular romance novel (and I’m not even talking my favorites because I know that nobody wants to adapt historicals or PNR right now, I accept it, I’m saying super popular Ali Hazelwood or Tessa Bailey contemporaries) they RE-ADAPTED a depressing book that was already turned into a depressing movie that everyone was lukewarm on years ago.
    I know that the book is super popular among many, for ME it was pretentious and boring and an ultimate downer-and I read it before I really got hardcore into romance as an adult and understood the genre as a genre.
    But most of all, I just hate that when there is a romance boom and a romcom renaissance on the horizon, the answer is …. Adapting the same shit again. THAT bugs me almost more than the ending. Adapt something new ffs! I’m begging! Don’t promote this as a romcom because THEY DID THAT.
