What a fantastic presentation. Hats off to Thibault for the presentation -- and thank you B&H. I skipped ahead a few sections because I've experience in black and white. What I found fascinating is how Thibault used SilverEfex for the BNW conversion process. I quit using SilverEfex and the rest of the NIK Collection years ago in favor of what I thought would be more advanced techniques when it comes to doing black and white. What I discovered here is how he layered various versions in Photoshop and then masked in the desired pixels, much like how we'd use Photoshop for multiple exposure blending, etc. A simple method that really opens up the possibilities. Probably going to revisit SilverEfex now!

My approach to B&W photography is intentional, not a fallback of an original color exposure that went wrong. I shoot both color and B&W in film and digital. I base my choice on whether the scene's attraction is mostly the colors or the tonal contrasts. My selection of film stock and filters or the way I adjust the sliders in Lightroom control the way the final image will look. Knowledge of how color turns into grey scale is very important to making good adjustments.

So, the point is to use black and white when you can't figure out color photography, and use fake vignetting when you can't quite compose your images well?

Not a fan of presets. Would you have a third party provide your exposure settings? How about giving you directions on composition, or the lens to use to capture your image? Why have a third party provide you with presets to finish off your image? Make your photos your own from start to finish. This image technically is not your image, but rather a co-image created by you and DXO. We are starting to see black and white photos that look very similar out there. It’s very easy to identify a NIK stamped image.
