I don't see any negatives here.
Can only bring more positive exposure & help draw more talent therefore more interest/eye's on the NBL.

What a coup to get Melo and The Jet as ambassadors in North America for the NBL. Yes, it's laughable when Melo says the NBL is the second best league in the world. A lot of these x-NBA guys don't fully understand the European game, but Melo was spot on that the NBL and the NBA have a lot of similarities in terms of style of the game. Everyone who loves high quality basketball should want the NBL to become more and more competitive by getting more and more international players - including from North America (which includes Mexico and Canada, let's not forget). Also, if you don't follow the NBA closely, you may not be aware of just how influential Kenny Smith is. Forget Melo, Kenny is a legend in the US. He's one of the top commentators, and everyone who watched the NBA in the 80s and 90s watched him play and knows how good he was. This is a guy that was playing against Magic, Larry, and Michael. In the case of Jordan, he played with him at UNC before they both went pro. When Kenny talks in the US, people listen. My point is not to throw shade at anyone, but to stress just how important this could be to the NBL in terms up getting top North American talent that may not be aware of the NBL as a another option besides playing in Europe or college ball in the US.

Well said, sadly not many people in the Arena even recognized Kenny last night. Going through memory lane, Jet shot that game tying 3 in G1, 1995 Final, fuck Kenny. (Penny fan for life) 😃

In the early to mid 90s and all the way up to 2000ish the NBL was on channel 10 all the time and you had to record the NBA finals on VHS because it was only shown a handful of times (Rockets Champions) at 1 or 3am in the morning.
No one really gave a fuck about the NBA and the NBL sold out the Townsville stadium at EVERY game for many, many years.
So sad that it is starting from less than scratch.

Time for the NBL to grow up and stand on it's own two feet, rather than trying to piggyback off tenuous NBA links that have no knowledge or prior relationship with Australia. The claims of being the '2nd best League in the world' are a complete joke as any Euro League team will comfortably kick the ass of an NBL team. Just look at the results of the recent FIBA Intercontinental Cup Singapore 2024 as evidence.

The history is only as important as how strong the future of your league can be. Having connections and potential business investors is crucial to the growth of your league and its imprint globally. The difference between the Euroleague and the NBL is the Euroleague likes to make the world believe they're better than the NBA and the NBL is actually a better producer of talent than Europe and is a better partner. The Next Stars program is a way better option than sending developmental players than Europe. Also, the business model in Australia is way more stable than the Euroleague as a whole because of it operating across different countries.

To say we are the 2nd best league is a bit of a stretch. But in terms of player development and opportunities I think it’s not outlandish. But they need to clarify it.
