Hampson is awful, as usual, but Ramey is great. Overall, I much prefer Ghiaurov and Cappuccilli.

Samuel Ramey = God, Thomas Hampson = Undeveloped Tenor.

There's no reason why both voices ahould be dark here. Riccardo is clearly the younger man - and taking advice from Giorgio. Nice to have voices of different qualities here. Riccarso is a Lyric Baritone part.

@Suzanne Derringer But Hampson is not a even lyric baritone. Milnes, Cappuccilli, Prey, etc. are lyric baritones - Cappuccilli actually sang it on the Bonynge recording. But no, Riccardo is a bass part, but usually cast as a baritone. Hampson is an undeveloped tenor.

@@xxsaruman82xx87 I don't think it really matters. Hampson has had a good career and is an intelligent Singer. He and Ramey sang together frequently.
There's more than one 'right' Voice for any role and more than one approach to the aesthetics and historical context of any opera.

@Suzanne Derringer It does matter, because Hampson is not a baritone. He has no squillo. His technique is really bad. There is only one bel canto technique, and Hampson’s is most certainly not.
