The owner of the 57 Chev wouldn't actually let anyone else drive the car in the film. Couldn't blame him really as he had a LOT of money invested in the car. During the movie, the cars 'owner' Rebel (a blind man) claimed the Chev did a standing quarter in 9.2 seconds. This was the real owner's best time in the 800 hp beast. You can see the real owner driving when Mike is doing his doughnut burnout before the race with Fox.
Sadly it sits languishing in a guys shed here somewhere now partly disassembled, after he bought it, with him saying he'll get it finished one day. it will probably be like so many other classics..left to rot unless somebody convinces the owner to part with it.

the windshield breaking the way it did is not bullshit..here in Australia most of our cars used toughened glass windscreens that shattered like that up until the late 70's..some even a bit longer than that.that included a lot of the older Chevs and other imports as well..was just cheaper and I think in some states is was actually a legal requirement...not 100% sure on that one...and all in all its no different to many American movies with over the top crashes, jumps chases etc...just how the movie industry is.
Occasionally I see Holdens, Australian Fords and Australian Chryslers in LHD. Most Australians would ask why, or think it odd, but not stupid. Up until the late 50s Holden were BUILDING Chevys in their factories, so there's some chance this car was even born that way
Your'e right, Holdens did build LHD Holdens for export to other countries, and others would be cars people have imported to their countries and converted them to LHD themselves so they can register their cars. and yes, Holdens assembled Chevs and others in their factories in RHD form from CKD (completely knocked down) kits that we put together here for quite some time as well.a lot of these came from Canada from what I have been told.
