Huge THANK YOU for this video series! :) I just bought a new Mac Mini and decided to setup from scratch. This helped me a lot to take the opportunity to get rid of all the different small annoyances and customise things I hadn't known before that could be done. 👍
Thanks, John. I'm new to using REAPER, so I apologize for any potentially trivial questions or proposals. In this video, you demonstrated how to write MIDI continuous controller curves in dedicated lanes within the MIDI editor. This seems like the standard solution when, for example, you want to set a specific curve for the modulation wheel or any other CC parameter (in my case, used to adjust plugin/sound parameters in real-time). Recently, I realized that perhaps the REAPER approach to automating (using a curve/flag) modifications to any plugin parameters is through TRACK AUTOMATION ENVELOPES, a specific feature of REAPER. I believe this method of automating plugin parameter settings could be the ideal approach because REAPER helps display, for each plugin, the name and type of each parameter. What are the pros and cons of these two different methods? Perhaps this could be an idea for one of your future videos? Thank you for your extensive dissemination work. Giorgio
Hi! Its kind of personal preference which way you go with it, you can go 100% MIDI or envelopes or any blend that suits. I tend to have CCs just for performance related things (pitch and modulation performance) recorded with the MIDI and track envelopes for Mix related things that I record or write in later.
@@TheREAPERBlogYes, maybe having all settings as MIDI could offer the advantage of potential "conceptual" similitude to another DAW workflows and encapsulating all details within a single track maybe is clearer. On the other hand, at first galnce, I tend to prefer the REAPER Automation Envelopes feature, which displays all plugin settings for each plugin in the track. This seems great to me because I can simply edit the "logical" parameter names without having to think about associating each parameter (such as an "expression" on a string plugin instrument) with a corresponding CC value (which needs to be defined and associated every time). Does that make sense to you?
I got a mouse with a horizontal scroll wheel by my thumb specifically with MIDI work in mind. I have regular scroll in both directions, and zoom in both directions if I hold down Ctrl. It's amazing.
One thing I've been meaning to find out (I've actually been using per track editors) is if it's possible to automatically make an item active when the editor is open and the track is playing as the playback position passes over.
I'm trying to find out how to add the text of each midi note, like if I put a note on D, it'll say D on the midi note. Many times, I don't know what chords I used. I have to look at each note & then look to the left for each note to see what they are. With the text on each note, I can literally see "D F# A" on the different notes, and automatically know it's a D chord.
But, how do I change the contrast between the white and black notes in the midi editor? The default is very difficult to see and I can't figure how to change that setting.

Thanks for this series of tutorials. Its been a massive help as I have just moved to Reaper. Cheers.
These Reaper settings have been a time saver for me. Thanks so much for all your hard works, and I'm going to buy your mixing course to support you.

What mouse brand and model is it? 👍
Very helpful as always - Thanks John.

Great! Thank you! Keep the tutorials coming! 👌👌👌
Hey Man, thanks for this stuff. You have been a big help.
Thanks man!
When I double click the midi window simply does not open up and neither does it open up when I right click and enter the command open midi editor.

View menu: Piano Roll Notes: Show note names
Great Stuff as usual! Thanks!

In the theme tweak window
MIDI editor background color (naturals)
MIDI editor background color (sharps/flats)
