  • Cessna L-19/ O-1 Bird Dog Vietnam Airshow Demo. The mighty Bird Dogs flew in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts as liaison, artillery spotting, and forward air control (FAC) aircraft. Typically only armed with marking rockets, the bold Bird Dog pilots braved some of the most lethal combat zones in this dependable single engine Cessna. We try to honor their legacy by restoring and showcasing these magnificent aircraft in all of their original livery. For more information, please contact me at honorflightfac@gmail.com

I was a Marine O1 pilot in 68 flying out of Quang Tri in support of the Marines at Khe Sahn. Our call sign was Fingerprint. Most rewarding flying of my career.

Good video! I was an Army Bird Dog pilot and remote Plt. Ldr. at Marble Mt. outside of Da Nang, 1968 (8 birds). Supported Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Arvins. We directed artillery, air strikes, naval gun fire (shot two missions off the battleship New Jersey, others/swift boats etc.). Made a few radio relay trips into Laos with the Green Berets, support over Ho Chi Minh Trail. But the hero's were the ground troops. We felt privileged to do cross service - great people. during my teens (14-17yrs) I was a Civil Air Patrol member, what an awesome experience; we were fortunate being that our CAP squadron commander was so proactive in getting everyone their glider and power wings during flight encampments. I solo'd gliders & cessna's at 16yrs old in the late 70's. Fortunately our Co had a friend who had an L19 Bird Dog which I must have had about 10hrs of stick time...what a joy to fly that bird...

i was a cook in the USAF at Phang Rang AB Vietnam. As cooks we ate like kings (steak from the chow hall & lobsters via the mama-sans). We shared our good fortune with a few soldiers who dwelt with us. In appreciation they took my up in a Bird Dog, even allowing me to drop a smoke grenade. Vietnam is (was) beautiful from up high and reminded me of Virginia with its green, rolling hills,

@@honorflightfac I had engine failure in IFR conditions. I broke out of the clouds at 900 feet. By pure luck there was an abandoned dirt road. Made a perfect dead stick landing after running over large piles of animal dung.

Hahaha, wanted to stick with bagpipes but the airshow folks like something faster paced. Our actual show audio was live aircraft comms and Vietnam era rock 🇺🇸

Good demo but how utterly unprofessional to fly with a helmet and not fasten the chinstrap. I wouldn't want to share my airspace with such a pilot. How did he get a display authorisation?

Tank Builders thanks for your comment but you sound like a prepubescent Justin Bieber fan who obviously knows jack crack about actual flying. Please limit your commenting expertise to skinny jeans and remote control toy videos. Cheerio!
