British orchestral prog rock at its very best. Annie's voice simply amazing.

The Best song by Renaisance, and this is the best version of this song! The bass solo is so fantastic as well the ethereal power that Annie sends us in another dimension with chills when she extolls "Imagine the Burning Embers"........ and then sends me into a dream when she sings Ashes are burning the...."WAY!"
This song also incorporates, jazz, sythesizer, classical music as well as contemporary & operatic vocals and a kick ass bass solo! Top Ten songs for me of all time! chris

I agree with you totally. I saw them live in Amsterdam in the seventies, I didnt knew them at all, but from that moment this live registration is one of my favorite concerts ever. That voice of Annie, so crystalclear.....Beutifull.

IMO, when it comes to recorded live bass solos, Jon Camp's performance on this recording of Ashes Are Burning is second _only_ to Chris Squire's live rendition of "The Fish" on the Yessongs live album. Of course, Jon freely admitted that Chris Squire was his main inspiration... Annie's voice was always a major, appealing feature of Renaissance along with John Tout's keys, but IMO, it was Jon Camp's bass playing that made me say, "This is a _really great_ band!"

@@alanbruce8632 I agree. I am not certain why he was not voted into the top bass players list. I mean, seven minute bass solo of this caliber? how can this possibly be missed by people rating bass players?

One of the great tragedies of the 70's is that these concerts were not filmed! Their music is beyond reproach and transports you to another world. Was fortunate enough to see them in the very early 80's at a small bar in St. Louis. Great show, but the encore, Ashes Are Burning, brought the place to their knees!

seriously, Annie's voice is pure and bright and crystalline. They don't sing this way any more..... Annie's voice is probably the best voice i've ever heard. A singer should cultivate that, a singer should perfect the sound of her/his voice, trying to reach the maximum purity as possible. This particular performance at Carnegie Hall remains of the best recorded performances in history. We need performances like that again...

      @@davidcohen821 wow!

    • @JJ8KK
      @JJ8KK 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@MugurDeBrad Indeed. What I especially love about her voice is that while she has that incredible range to hit those high notes, she doesn't feel obliged to apply that excessive show-off vibrato that many singers with equal range feel they must include on every note. To me, a fair amount of appropriate vibrato on sustained notes is great, but when it's excessive, IMO, it distracts from the overall beauty of what a great 'set of pipes' can produce in a song. Annie is a favorite of mine cuz she always seemed to understand that. :)

When Annie is queued up and sings "imagine the burning embers"........ I always get goosebumps and I get transported to another plane of existence :-) The absolutely best rendition of ashes are burning with an unbelievable bass solo as well as the rest of the arrangement and of course a Annie's unbelievable ethereal powerful voice. This album really has the best versions of all their songs like running hard, mother Russia, prologue, etc.

I saw them at Winterland (San Francisco) opening for Rick Wakeman on Halloween in 1975. The hall wasn't too full. As was my custom back then, my consciousness was 'enhanced'. Ashes Are Burning was the last song played. When they reached the part (in this version at about 16:45) where it begins to speed up, the mirror ball kicked in. I spent the last part of the song whirling around the floor like a Dervish. Even almost 40 years later, it still brings a smile.

Ethereal, moody, dark and they have a certain nuisance. They are among my favorites. I am really heavily into EARLY Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett and Rick Wright..they were extremely innovative, original and experimental. They were also unreal in a different way. I love Renaissance because their music has a certain depth to it. It just does not sound as if they were writing music just to become famous. It was quite melodic and emotional in fact. Take care all.

    Roads leading everywhere
Come with me now and show how you care
    Follow the dying embers
Cross on the paths that they lay
Breath of the past the earths yesterday
Clear your mind maybe you will find
That the past is still turning
    Circles sway echo yesterday
    Ashes burning ashes burning
    Colours are fading starlight
    Silver the way to find
Walking the shadows, there in our mind
    Changing the order slowly
    Leaving the mist of time
Fingers are holding fragments of mine
Clear your mind maybe you will find
That the past is still turning
    Circles sway echo yesterday
    Ashes burning ashes burning
    Imagine the burning embers
    They glow below and above
    Your sins you won't remember
And all you'll find there is love
    Ashes are burning brightly
The smoke can be seen from afar
So now you're seeing how far
    Ashes are burning the way
    Ashes are burning the way

I saw them in Madison Wi. Anne was telling jokes I was front row center, only about 1500 people. She asked me why I was the only person laughing at her jokes. I told her my father in law wrote for Punch. Not very exciting but memorable for me

I saw them during this same tour at Mackie Auditorium in Boulder, Colorado (more intimate than Carnegie Hall). It is still my all time favorite live performance. Jon Camp's Rickenbacker bass solo was amazing! He was Chris Squire's only peer.

I saw this Live ust have been 2019 in Rio de Janeiro. And I do confess that I have a love thing with "Ashes Are Burning" like since the early 70ies
So 40 years later the still emotion was there and Dunford wasnt there ! Annie is the absolute Diva of progressive rock.

Always has been a favorite piece of vinyl for me. Got my first copy while working our college radio station, and promptly wore it out…. Picked up another copy which I still have today (care of vinyl goes a long ways to keeping it sounding good). This is such a great set of performances, wish I would been able to witness it. Every member is at the top of their game, and Annie’s vocals are top shelf.

Brilliant live version. First time hearing it. One of my favorite groups. First heard Prologue in 1973 when vacationing after high school. Brings back great memories and is spine tinling as are most of their songs, just like I feel when listening to classical music.
